I went back and checked an old thread about the atlas cover, and there's a fluffy ball thing with a hoof and a large horn sticking out of it next to the godess. Hard to tell with it so small though.

How did they introduce Cerb? He was a previous FF summon, and now an HNM in this game. And Odin for that matter.
Gonna have to jump on the "It's an HNM, not a summon" train. Just because I can't think of anything that SMNs need via another avatar. Maybe a group refresh (lightning charge?), and possibly an attack up move. But we'd still be limited by the 1 minute thing.
As far as gear... up until 50, there's exactly 2 pieces of SMN gear: the Dragon staff and carby mitts. Everything else is plain ole mage gear, except we don't get much out of it, save +MP and hMP. We get nothing from stats, like every other job. Our AF sucks, other than the pants. And I suppose if you want to macro the horn into Elemental Siphon.
And the sad thing is, if Austere didn't exist, there wouldn't really be anything better for SMN. The AF is crap, and yet was worn because there was nothing better. And other than Austere, the only other gear that enhances a SMN is at end-game. So, congrats; you've finally reached 75, and once you put in a bunch of extra work and get lucky with drops, you can finally enhance your character's abilities.
MNK crying about JSE irks me for this reason. They have a ton of gear that enhances them, and even most of their AF is fairly decent. SMN has 1 set of JSE, but it's all we have, til end-game. Evoker's gages and Nightmare gloves should be low level gear. I'd take latent crap like that, if it was lv30. Imagine having Nightmare gloves when you leveled on mandies, 24-32.
And my take on a 3rd group of avatars: Ones from another planet/dimension. Celestials are Gods of Vanadiel, and Terrestials were born from Vanadiel. What about other Terriestials from other planets?
I have the limited edition FFXI OST which has that same artwork on the whole exterior of it...
Just checked it.. Ixion is indeed in that 'mural' and he is indeed that fluffy ball thing to the left of the naked pink lady (who we can assume is altana). Interesting that he appears there of all places.. I don't believe Amano would have known so much of preplanning at that stage.. but maybe they worked out what each avatar was for long long ago
Judging by the two picks (very hard to tell) it is not overly large. Meaning it's not of an intimidating size such as a HNM would be. I don't see 18 people crowding around a mob that size beating on it feeling in the least intimidated or awed by it. It's going to be an avatar.
i really dunno if size is all that important..
after all, King Arthros was once a HNM and look how tiny he is..
On another note, Absolute Virtue is the absolute terror of all HNMs and he doesn't really look all that intimidating. Hes a fricking dragoon
That's definitely ixion i'd say, u can see a horse leg and hoof coming out from the bottom. The actual model has claws ofc, but Amano usually takes liberties and doesn't recreate stuff exactly.Originally Posted by Gwynplaine

now that i look at the second half there is a dark odin (large) and another blue/white guy (smaller) riding a creature below him. wonder wtf that is >_>
Claws instead of hooves! Clearly it's for use in Pankration.

Since ToAU SE really seems to have used the size of newly introduced NM/HNM to correlate to their power.Originally Posted by Spira

Partly I think it is practicality, it allows the melee to spread out a bit too in most cases.
Unless this is something along the lines of a Cactrot Rapido, where the thing takes off regularly during the fight and you have to give chase I really don't see this thing as intimidating, and SE has changed since King Arthos, I mean come on that thing hasn't been considered an HNM in what 5 years? SE has been making NM and HNM since CoP and ToAU look more intense.
Come on a little freaking common sense here, they already did the New Notorious Monsters (06/04/2008) what they wait 2 days and go oh wait... maybe we should have put some pics of the Pony in with the pics of the badass looking Ma Mool Ja, Troll and Lamia. This is something different from an NM. It is in all likely hood an Avatar. Less likely would be an long story arch. Least likely is HNM.
Cerberus was introduced as being tamed by Gurfurlur the Menacing after being let out of the underworld on the search for some escapees. We later find out that these 'escapees' were actually Luzaf and Co but the backstory for Cerberus was there from the beginning. He is a monster from the underworld let out by Odin to hunt down Luzaf and company... it just so happened that Gurfy tamed him and the silly dog lost track of his duties.Originally Posted by Kenji
Cerberus was a summon in one Final Fantasy iirc, he was always known more as an enemy than an ally.
Odin was introduced as the mysterious Dark summon hinted at as far back as CoP and even Zilart mentioned him a ways who waged a war against an Iron Colossus in an epic battles ages ago and the secret behind the Shadow Lords powers.
Hydra was hinted to in update details as being an experimental serpentine creature currently being saught after by the Mamool Ja Savages to fight against the armies in Al Zahbi.
Ixion is most definitely an avatar of some sorts, SE has been anal to speak on new avatars but stated at least once that new summons would be available to players in the future and granted they are pulling out the stops on this update (finally?) this seems all too much like the Diabolos surprise which wasnt really a surprise given Diabolos' attitude to the player throughout CoP compared to Bahamut.
It seems that people don't know what a hnm is. King Arthro is a hnm. Waraxe Beak and the Sea Horror are hnms. Hnm stands for hyper notorious monster and is any nm that fights well beyond it's level.
Waraxe Beak and Sea Horror? You're stupid. <_>Originally Posted by Ramses
You just defined a regular NM. HNM is a player-defined term which correlates to free-spawning monsters of extreme difficulty. There are 9 HNMs in the game right now. The three kings, the three wyrms, and the three ToAU HNMs.
*EDIT* Actually, the three Beastmen NMs in ToAU could be considered HNMs too, so 12 I guess.
BP Rage: COMET
He channels temporal power or whatever etc, and through some sort of tie-in of assistance from Cait Sith... COMET GO
I can dream. :D
Oh boy, talk about stupid. Regular nms do not fight well beyond their level, they are just extra tough for their level. Hnm is a term used by SE, not just players. Anyone who has played this game since the beginning knows the original hnms included the ones I stated above. Calling someone stupid and you being wrong makes you insanely stupid.Originally Posted by Therin
No shit, every person who plays the game knows that and they should also know it was players who came up with calling them hyper/high notorious monsters.Originally Posted by Ramses
But you also should know by now that SE has changed the way they design mobs. The old HNM you speak of to SE were just NMs they look like regular mobs but made much stronger and had desirable drops. Name one HNM introduced in the past 3 years that looks like a regular mob and is the size of a regular mob, name just one.
Don't go dredging up 5-6 year old content and try to compare it to what SE has been doing the past 3. Because players at one time considered a Mob and HNM also means players can choose to no longer consider it HNM.
anyone notice this? I didn't really look through old thread

Raiden was an upgraded form of Odin from FF6, from what I read.
Um, i didn't compare anything old to new. Learn to read.Originally Posted by Rowe
Where does SE use the term HNM?Originally Posted by Ramses
Also, the reason why Serket/Simurgh/Roc and others were HNM ages ago is because the term is, as I said, a player-defined term and back then, they were the hardest monsters around. Hence the HNM label.
Think about it this way, if they raised the level cap to 100 so that we could solo Fafnir and the wyrms and such, and then made a new set of 10 new strong notorious monsters, would the players still call Fafnir, which can be soloed by level 100 PLD/RDM an HNM? No, definitely not.
Not exactly, considering things like Bloodtear, Steelfleece, KA, Simurgh, Roc are infact HNMs except we the players have evolved so far past them that they are no longer considered by players the HNMs they used to be. HNM is a term used by SE as well, seeing as they mentioned a 'new, high-level notorious monster' when mentioning Hydra so as it stands it is an official term.Originally Posted by Therin
This is correct except i am not too sure that Sea Horror was ever actually an HNM. Waraxe Beak definately was an HNM since he casts a spell that still cant be used by players, fights way harder than any level 55 mob, KA was an HNM for sure as well.It seems that people don't know what a hnm is. HNM was a term created by Japanese players. As far as I know, it has NEVER been uttered publically by anyone affiliated with SE.
One of the things that annoys me more than anything else is seeing people refer to their linkshells as HNM linkshells when they don't touch HNMs. Dynamis, sky, sea, Limbus, etc. Those are not HNMs, and neither are these piss-easy mobs you're talking about.
Should my social be considered an HNM LS because we camp Sea Horror?
