So I lied.. I ended up being busy today. >< Tommorrow is Magic night so I'll be gone most of the night. I'll try and drop you a message on AIM if I get a chance and aren't busy/don't forget.

Wow.. every time I see that Xerxes vs. Leonides thread I laugh so hard it hurts.

I started playing just after Tempest came out, and kept going 'til just before Kamigawa block. Pretty much did it all - pickup games, draft, sealed decks, placed 8th at CT States once and 9th at a PTQ in Providence (gettin that close to the money REALLY hurt).. I even judged tourneys at a couple of my local shops, a few prerelease tourneys, and got some work at PT:Boston a few years back.

BTW : I thought that was the same David Williams at WSOP '04 that used to play MTG.. I didn't think he was that young tho! I met him at the PT I worked - when you're a judge you tend to meet some of the more known players and up here between Boston and New York you run into them quite a bit when you're at the big shops.

    Re: Magic: The Gathering Discussion

I used to play a lot in High School. We had a geek corner in the Cafeteria and the Band Hall where everyone would play Chess, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon Cards/Gameboy, and Magic The Gathering.

I played a lot of decks, from the raw Fire burn deck, I had an Elf Deck that was pretty rediculous in long games, but my favorite deck was my Blue Mill Deck. That one used to piss a lot of people off and it's the one I won most of the tourneys I went to with.

I started playing gain for while when they had the guild sets going. Dual color decks built around a certain theme. It was really fun and made for double/triple color decks being more common, and making the game more interesting. Although nothing is really more interesting than a spectrum deck played well.

I still have a Shoebox with a couple thousand cards somewhere in my closet, I've though about picking it up again but I kinda decided against it when I heard that they didn't reprint Counterspell in 8th edition.

I had a blue / white stais / mill deck that was slow and agonizing and painful. I won a TON with that deck by making people draw down.

They didn't reprint counter spell? What BS ... that spell was key.

Seems like they decided it was a little imbalanced. Cancel was printed as the same exact thing but 1 colorless more expensive.

I hate that shit, downgrading staple cards. See: shock, shard volley.

Yeah, Counterspell and Boomerang were amazing spells for Blue which could hold your opponent off until you could get set up. Was definitely my favorite color deck to play, since it seemed a lot of people stayed away from it.

Brain Freeze was one of the best cards ever made for Blue Imo...

    Re: Magic: The Gathering Discussion

Blue can be difficult to play well since it has mana issues, and because it's more about controlling the game than actually kicking your opponent's ass, but it's incredibly powerful when done right. Force of Will just might be the best (non-power nine) spell in the game.

Thank you for that, I couldn't for life of me remember Kismet... It's been since like 11th grade since I've played. I graduated in 97 if that's a time. Serraph Angels were the shit then.

Oh I also remember a blue/black control deck with those assains ... I can't remember the name of them either. I stopped playing right after I think it was like Weatherlight / Mirage. I was a Senior and no one around me played except for like 12 year olds who would complain all the time on control decks and whine and cry or the "comic book guy" from the Simpsons who usually smelled horribly at the card store.

I should see if I still have any of my cards.
