    there are 11 times the amount of deaths from smoking than road deaths, and even more for gun related deaths, which is why you see so many smoking ads.

    you're an idiot.
    Because I'm a realist and don't believe those retarded ass Truth commercials? Good golly gee.

    I umm...I think you misunderstand what the doctor says when he says the lungs are clear. <_< He's not saying there's no tar in there, he's saying there are no sounds (ie fluid in the lungs).

    If you'd like, I can sit and explain all the things smoking does to you- And this is coming from someone who used to smoke. So many noticeable changes when I quit. But yea, I spent two years teaching physiology, if you want a lesson on how it damages the lungs, increases your risk of heart disease, and causes visible things like greyed skin etc (You can show me pictures of smokers and non smokers and it's so easy to pick out the ones that smoke a lot for a long time). I'm more than willing to explain it all.

    I never said that smoking didn't kill hundreds of thousands, way to blow words out of proportion. I said they EXAGGERATE 90% of the time. I know there are hundreds upon thousands of deaths a year to smoking, but those stupid before&after images/truth commercials are highly unrealistic unless said person smokes a carton a day for 30 odd years.

    @Nystul

    I know that, there's obviously tar in her lungs from smoking as much as she does, it's just that she's been smoking for so long and those adds make it seem like she should be on an Oxygon mask with a fucking hole in her throat by now. which is retarded to force people into thinking.

    I just want to point out the delicious irony of "I said they EXAGGERATE 90%of the time." Good stuff.

    So let me explain to you what your mother is doing. The body tightly regulates processes. In fact, the speed at which your blood passes through the lungs is even regulated very carefully to match the amount of oxygen that the blood can pick up. When you need more oxygen, for example, your heart rate increases to deliver more oxygen to tissue, and respiration increases in direct proportion. Now, if you pack a bunch of tar into your lungs, you reduce the ability of oxygen to diffuse into the blood. Anyone who's ever smoked a lot in a short time (ever go out on a friday night and burned your way through a pack?) knows that it causes shortness of breath. Less O2 causes increased heart rate. If you keep smoking, that will keep happening. Raised heart rate, raised blood pressure. THere is a problem here- eventually the blood pressure goes up too much. The walls of the lungs and blood vessels are quite thin. If the pressure gets too high, it starts to force water out of the blood and into the lungs. This is a point of no return- this is pulmonary edema. If this starts to happen to someone, they will die from it. Medication can slow the process but it is locked into a positive feedback loop, and will continue to progress until the person dies. There is no cure- the only way you don't die from this is to die from something else first.

    Thats only one option. What if the tar causes inflammation? The body's normal response to that releases a lot of chemicals, and that causes the tissue in the lungs- those little sacks called aveoli where the gas exchange takes place- to become less elastic. Instead of being nice and springy, they stretch out when you inhale and don't snap back to shape. This makes it hard to get rid of the CO2. When you inhale again, you don't get oxygen because all that CO2 filled air is sitting in the lungs getting in the way. Thats emphysema.

    How about instead of pulmonary edema, you just get plain old heart disease? Reduced O2 means your heart has to work harder. If your heart has to work harder it gets stronger, right? If you lift weights for the same muscle every day, does that help you? You need recovery time, right? Your heart doesn't get time off. Increasing the work load means it gets stronger in the wrong way. There isn't time for your body to alter blood supply to the heart. Heart muscle cells start to get big (enlarged heart). The cells get too big for nutrients to move through the cell, and without the improved blood supply, the cells die. This causes scar tissue. If you have a scar you know it's not like normal tissue- it's tougher, less flexible. Again- if you get to this point, you're dead...eventually. Medicine can slow the process but you'll die from it eventually. The scar tissue makes your heart work harder, which makes the problem worse, which makes it work harder, which makes it worse, until it shuts down.

    There is a reason that heart disease kills more people than anything else in America these days and smokers have significantly higher risk. There are more things that can go wrong that I didn't get into. If you couple smoking with a poor diet you're in even more trouble. For all the things that smoking does to kill you, waste money, make your skin look terrible, make you smell...and considering how it doesn't do much for you...there's not much of an argument to smoke anymore.

    edit: for image threadness, spoiler'd for moderate gorefactor.

    Haha, i didn't catch that. I got knocked out of a sit and go earlier when someone went all in with a shitty 10 4 suited after the turn and I had an over pair. He ended up hitting his flush and I lost $11. Those 4:1 odds mean nothing in poker.

    I don't think he is debating the validity of smoking killing people, he is saying how Truth ads make all smokers appear to be wretched, horribly disfigured, hideous sea-beasts when in reality, that just isn't true. The likelyhood of smoking affecting your appearance is definitely greater the longer you smoke but I would imagine that the majority of smokers out there are completely indistinguishable from the rest of the population, unless they specifically tell you or you see them smoking.

    Short answer: Yes, smoking fucks you up and will likely kill you, but it will probably not turn you into John Merrick.
