You googled it so you probably know...but it's only more expensive because of the series of automatic appeals that are built into the system for death penalty cases. Plus I don't think the death penalty is even an option for rape cases. They took that option away years ago when rapists realized it'd be easier to just kill their victim to keep her quiet rather than risk her identifying them.
