    Roomate internet battles

Whenever my roommate is using the internet(often), the connection will give him preference, particularly if he is using Limewire or uTorrent. I understand that both of these programs can be bandwidth intensive, but they shouldn't be bringing my bandwidth to the crawl or near standstill that I get put in. The issue is, I'm not just referring to MMO usage, I have issues with loading simple websites.

I'm not that technical a person, but I was wondering how other people handle this type of situation. I think this might be a router driven issue, however perhaps there is something that can be done within the preferences of the router or these programs to help the issue.

Just set bandwidth limits on the file sharing apps you both use. Limit them to say, 75% of your overall bandwidth to leave a chunk for other stuff.

It's partly throttling, but Bittorrent specifically is known to cause more issues than most. There was an article recently with some potential fixes in the comments http://www.formortals.com/Home/tabid/36 ... fault.aspx

Personally, I generally only leave torrents up when I'm asleep or at work. Maybe choose a machine between the two of you and just leave it running when you're not trying to use the connection otherwise.

In my shared house where everyone torrents, I force everyone to use Azureus where the upload can be capped. Generally I know that this is more harmful to the overall torrent that can be seeded/shared. I'm not sure of what other client can control the upload speeds, but in the house of 5 here I get them all to change it to 2kb/s upload and unlimited/fastest download. The result is that the internet feels "normal" and nothing is ever too slow, compared to them uncapping their uploads, resulting in everyone's net to be slow.
