    Re: Iphone 3g with GPS!

I posted this is in IRC after a friend pointed it out, and I thought I'd throw it here too for those of you considering the new iPhone because it's cheaper...

Along with the $199 iPhone, AT&T will be raising the monthly plan from $60/mo to $70. Over the course of 2 years (the mandatory service contract), you'll actually be spending $40 more over the last generation iPhone.

Also text messages are not included anymore:
    $5 for 200 messages or
    $15 for 1500 messages

(although I guess with 3g you can just email?)

    3G not 3 GB, it's $199 for 8 gigabytes, $299 for 16 gigabytes.

This news is like fucking sex and a slap in the face to all those who bought an iPhone when they came out just because they were cool. The service is the only shitty thing about this phone. Is it still like 70 bucks a month?

Fuck, I was hoping I was just exaggerating. That's fucking ridiculous tbh. That's like $1600 Dollars for an iPhone, fuck that noise. Maybe once you can buy it without selling your soul to AT&T or get some other sort of service it'll be worth the $199.

Is that just the Data plan for $70 a month, or is voice included?

Here is the AT&T press release detailing the new service plans. The $70/mo is with the voice plan included. Consumers pay $30/mo for unlimited 3G data, and then a voice plan which starts at $39.99/mo. Corporate plans start at $45/mo for unlimited data and then whatever their voice plan is after that.

Eh, that's not bad. I'll keep my Blackberry, but that's not bad. I'm just not a big fan of touch screens.

Well, the base plan only includes 450 minutes and 200 text messages. I'm a guy, I hardly talk on the phone longer than a few minutes, and 450 is barely enough for me. I imagine your everyday Joe needs more than that. I saw on a few blogs that the base plan drops the 200 texts also, and that you'd need to tack on another $5/mo to get the texts added to the plan. But I haven't seen that confirmed yet.

    Re: Iphone 3g with GPS!

The text is what bothers me...I'd rather pay $0 for voice and simply pay by the minute for what I do use(even at $1/min I wouldn't exceed $40 most months...), and then a text plan. But a voice plan I'll rarely use with very limited text is lame

I use cell phones almost entirely as mobile internet devices these days.

P.S. if you use 450 minutes I don't think you really fit the stero-type you were going for ;0

You could, but not everyone has good email support on their phone. Text messages are a bit more convenient for most people to manage. My original razr v3 with god-awful GPRS data had POP3/SMTP support, along with a Java applet for a couple webmail accounts, if you needed them. I picked up a razr v3xx with 3G and they axed the POP3/SMTP and left me with webmail (and not even Gmail). Freakin' useless.

Oo? 450 minutes averages to about 15 minutes a day... that's not a lot!

While I can agree that having an iPhone would be totally sweet, in my current location (South of Seattle), AT&T doesn't have very good service. My aunt uses AT&T and she says their customer service is terrible.

I use t-mobile and have a Sidekick LX. It has a music player, unlimited messaging/web browsing/e-mail/IM'ing... And I have never had a problem with t-mobile customer service. Sometimes if you go a little too far away from civilization getting coverage is hard, but that can be expected from most cell companies.

450 minutes is daytime minutes. You have 5000 night and weekend minutes to use in addition to that. Plus mobile-to-mobile calling is FREE.

And don't forget about rollover minutes!

    Edit: it's actually 5000 minutes

Used 4,506 minutes last month. I only use about 500-600 peak minutes since everyone at my business is also on AT&T.

Reminds me of the commercial with the mom in the kitchen... "WHO'S MINUTES ARE THESE!?" "Mom, those minutes are from SEPTEMBER".

This new price and such is VERY appealing, can you use AIM/MSN on the iPhone? Pretty sure you can get email, but these and text messaging are extremely important to me. If it can do those well, then my next phone will probably be an iPhone.
With the ability for 3rd party programs now, AOL and MSN are developing IM programs so that you can text without using your SMS. Maybe it will allow us to send files and pictures like regular IM.

The touch screen on the iPhone is truly unlike anyone else's touch screen. They created new technology and patented it. I laugh when other phones claim that they have a touch screen too. It's almost apples and oranges comparing the two.

Thanks for reminding me...I guess I don't care about texting anymore, since most IM clients can send SMS to people's phones. Long as you're capable of running it in the background that is, otherwise it's useless.

    Re: Iphone 3g with GPS!

I sometimes have to run time studies (MODAPS) on a variety of product assemblies to see if our disabled individuals can work them. I get grease, slime, dirt, sludge, all sorts of shit all over my hands. Some of the plants I go into to consult have the absolute worst conditions ever. I get probably 20+ calls a day. Unless this patented touch screen has a magical self-cleanup and smear-proof screen, it won't be my cup of tea. I'm sure the iphone is great and an excellent smartphone, millions use it, it'd be pointless to debate. I know Jivetalk for blackberry uses all the popular chat clients and sends messages using the data plan (not SMS), I thought they had an iphone app too.

Edit: yeah, Jivetalk for the iphone uses a dataplan. It's not a free program, but it's not expensive either.
