    Re: Building New PC.

I'm with Mootsfox, about another month or two for the 4870 and 4870x2 to be released and also for driver updates / fixes on these new cards.

This isn't to say that the ATI cards are the only answer, rather that I would wait until the full range of ATI and NVidia cards are out and the bugs are worked out of the drivers before deciding on one or the other.

The 4870 will supposedly be out mid-July.

    I'm buying a HD4850 and selling my HD3870 today if I can.

    Re: Building New PC.

I'm going to hold out until they release a dual-slot card. The reference 4850s get extremely hot under load and since the single-slot design doesn't exhaust the air from the PC your internal temperatures skyrocket making your cooling system work harder, thus louder. Additionally, the 4850 doesn't have bitstreaming support and supposedly no PAP support, so I'd like to see what the 4870 has to offer before I pull the trigger.

Did you actually get the HD4850's and HD3870X2 to work together?

I tried with my HD4850 and HD3870 and just got BSODs.

Don't actually think I did, no. In the end, I just unplugged the crossfire connection from the 3870X2 and just ran 4850 CF. Didn't get to test it very much though as that mobo wasn't mine and the person was leaving. :\

There was an ad in the newspaper for 25% off all VisionTek cards at Best Buy. Thing thing is though, it expired the 21st yet most stores didn't put the cards on the shelves till the 22nd. Some did however.. and if you went to the right store, score!

Yeah, Best Buy had a sale on all VisionTek cards. The sale was supposed to end before the HD4850 was released. ATI pushed the release date forward, and Best Buy, not doubling checking anything, put them out for sale. The margins on this card are pretty low, I wouldn't be surprised if Best Buy lost money because of this sale.

But yeah, they didn't plan on selling them early, and they were trying to clear some stock, but it backfired on them.

To end the thread hijacking, to the OP, I say buy an X48 motherboard and buy a pair of HD4850's or HD4870's. They rape everything.

Speaking of rape, just ran Crysis @ 1920x1200, DX9, High, 16xAA at 23fps. 4850s in CF.

What temp readings are you guys getting on that with the stock fan?

And why does the box promote HDMI with there are 2x DVI and S-Video on the card itself? D:

Where did you guys find the drivers for the cards? They aren't on ATI.com.

    62-80C

It comes with a DVI to HDMI adapter. The DVI ports can actually do audio as well which is not standard.

The drivers are on the website. Both 8.6 and the hotfix, which comes with 8.6.

Damn that's a hot card... if the 4870 is too $$$ when it comes out, I'll be getting the 4850. I wonder if my Zalman GPU cooler will work on it.

    Re: Building New PC.

The 4870 is slated to retail for $299. It should be a dual-slot design, meaning cooler GPU and ambient case temperatures. Along with any other enhancements I'd say it's worth the $100 increase.
