Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard

    I didn't see any other EO2 topics, so I thought I'd make a post~

Anyone else picking this up the 16th?

For those who don't know, Etrian Odyssey is an oldschool dungeon crawler for the DS where you create your own party (choose the job classes) and venture through a pretty long dungeon. You map out the floors as you go on the touch screen. Basically you go as far in as you can, warp back to town and heal up, then go farther in. Each floor being harder than the previous (obviously) until you reach the end. There's also quests to do along the way, and other fun optional stuff.

The original was great, although I never finished it. I hear theres an insanely tough post-game that satisfies most hardcore RPGers

I liked the original, too. The postgame itself wasn't very long, but took a long time to prepare for it. It's basically an opportunity to retire and level new jobs and create your dream team that you didn't have when playing through the beginning of the game... as well as collecting materials for the best armor/weapons so you can survive the postgame and end boss.

At first the postgame was a disappointment, because I "finished" it and nothing happened. It wasn't until later that I accidentally stumbled upon the REAL postgame ending, with complete credits and all. And it takes more than simply beating the postgame boss.

I'm getting EOII when it comes out, too. I'm looking forward to killer deers handing my ass to me within the first 3 floors.

Grabbed this at Gamestop today, such a huge improvement over the original (if that's even possible)

totally thought this topic said 'Eternal Odyssey II' and this was the fastest RPG sequel in history.

edit: and by Eternal Odyssey II, I mean Lost Odyssey II, 5am what can I say O_o

I didn't really like the original but I'm willing to give it another chance.

To people that have played both: Can I just jump onto EO2? Or should I play 1 first <.<

I'm going to pick it up today, so I haven't played it, but it takes place in a different setting and location, so it's probably completely separate story-wise... not that the original had any story in the first place.

    Update:

Well, now I got it but I'm having trouble entering the password from the first game in there. It says its incorrect, but I'm sure I've got it right. At least I can try multiple versions of the password; maybe one will work.

I just got this and, well, it sure wasn't what I was expecting. Guess it's what I get for not playing the first one, but not even seeing any actual fighting kind of sucks. :/

It's decent in terms of progression and "story." Easy to learn and figure out how to do everything. I'd give is a 3.5/5 just because it's not graphically pleasing imo. Great gameplay though.

I just wish you could see the toons on the side attacking like the old-school FFs. Q_Q

lol. The lack of major attack animations is a godsend. You spend 90% of the game locked in combat, and it would be damn frustrating to have to watch animations every time. I'm also glad the small team behind this spent time on gameplay and not flashy animations.

Gameplay/balance/depth > annoying animations that you would turn off after an hour anyways

For example, who honestly left the attack animations on in Disgaea 1/2 after the first couple of hours?

I think he meant more like.. early FF attack animations, not flashy stuff that takes longer than 1-2 seconds, as opposed to the DQ-like battle system where you don't see your characters.

Still takes too long. I much prefer EO's where you can hold down A and be done with a combat round in 2 seconds.

To be honest, I didn't think I'd like EO when I started the original. I'm not really a fan of the Bard's Tale/Wizardry style first-person dungeon crawler. Maybe I was just spoiled by the FF series. But I tried EO and it kinda grew on me, and ended up eating a lot of my time. I played it all the way through to full completion (100% items/monsters in the log) and it was pretty satisfying despite the utter lack of a real story or closure.

Think of it as an outlet for your OCD tendencies.

It's starting to grow on me the more and more I play it, I guess I'm just not used to the whole "not seeing any sort of attack animations/character sprites" part of the game. Like you said, I was spoiled by the FF series. :<

Hexer + War Magus = killer combo

Password really does nothing...Town Medal/Crown are nerfed, and it has no other real effects. You can even change the guild name it gives you.

I did the Hexer + War Magus combo and fell in love. Revenge is so broken and awesome.

New team I built up is:

Ronin - Dark Hunter - War Magus
    Hexer - Troubadour.

Troub for stamina and divinity. War Magus for Transfer and Cursecut, god it's awesome. D:

Re: Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard

By the way, for those of you (like me) with password troubles, here's a post from a site admin at the atlus forums about it:

Although Etrian Odyssey II was tested with a range of passwords during the QA process, it has come to our attention that in select cases, passwords obtained from the first game are invalid in the sequel. If you are experiencing issues in entering your password, use the following verified password instead:

    u7jbRzMJFK9JOsZU1rDZ
    8?bZ8sDJ5MDgOuP7OIZg
    2MenPdC3SCuqnXTRz6Fl
    GmDEPCvxGMFeOp

And simply change your Guild name to the original name when given the opportunity to do so. We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope you enjoy your Etrian Odyssey II experience.

Re: Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard

Optimum party setup from my experience seems to be Front line War Magus, Dark Hunter, Ronin, and back line Gunner and Hexer.

    Why no Protector or Medic?

Hexer locks down random enemies first turn with Torpid (sleepy sleepy) allowing your other 4 DD to take them out quickly without taking any damage themselves. When TP gets low, have the Hexer use Corrupt (curses all enemies) and the War Magus use Curse Cut (which gives the WM TP back, as well as doing pretty sick damage, which he can then give to others through Transfer) allowing you to go untill your inventory is full of stuff to sell. Focus on Poison rank 10 first for your Hexer, as it will allow you to farm the 1st floor boss for a 30k drop, and massive experience.

Do Overhead specialization on your Ronin to cover Fire, and pick up Volt & Ice shot on your Gunner so you can trigger conditional drops as well as cover elemental weaknesses.

Nice to have a game I can play at work.

Picked it up, it was between this and FFTA2 and I figure this will be harder to find than FFTA2 in the future (not to mention I found a used copy already, and I have the extra 10% off from that Gamestop card). I got it on my lunch break, however, so I get to wait 5 hours to play it... unless I just close the DS whenever anyone walks by, hmm

Think I'll make my first party PLD BRD SAM WAR WHM, it's basic but it works.

Keep in mind that Troubador doesn't get Relaxing or Healing this time around (but still gets Divinity for the xp bonus). Also, the difference between a War Magus healer and a Medic healer is that the Medic gets Salve III and Revive, the War Magus gets only up to Salve II and no Revive (but you can still use items for that). Otherwise, they have the same healing capability, only the War Magus is a bit tougher melee and can get TP back for himself and the rest of the party with Cursecut and Transfer. Although without a Hexer, you can't really make use of that.
