MP Merits on Galka PLD?

Browsing the Alla PLD forums, this topic caught my eye. Basically it turned into a heated dicussion of HP vs MP Merits, aimed primarily at Galka PLDs. I stated, as a Galka PLD that I meritted 3HP 5MP and, as expected from Alla, the thread quickly became spammage of "You're stupid, MP Merits are worthless, Galka should be full HP Merits because HP is cool"

Now In my regular PLD/NIN gear, (no gear is used solely for HP of course) I sit at about 1600 HP and 270 or so MP (Homam hands/legs, Askar Boots, Lamia Bow). Maybe I just don't realize how big the HP gap is from Hume to Galka, but I really don't see any reason to crank up my HP any more, especially not by ditching MP merits. I feel it works fine for me and I don't plan on changing it, but is this a common trend of PLDs of other races? I figured most Humes, and lesser HP races would obviously merit HP, but HP Merits for Galka/Elvaan? I'm just curious because I can't remember the last time something tore through 1600 HP fast enough for me to say "Wow, I wish I had more HP"

Dunno, galka PLD; I have 1657 HP and 311 MP with max HP merits, maximum MP doesn't really matter so much when you're getting 13/tic back since you're only ever at it when you use Chivalry or at the start of a fight. I can't even count all the times that the 80 HP has saved me in shitty situations (holding Tiamat by myself, unslowed/elegied lowman Khim Dreadstorm->DAx2) or just when Aegis just refuses to block. My rationale always has been what good is extra MP if you're dead, and I'm sure someone has a clever counter argument for it, but its just my point of view.

i honestly see nothing wrong with meriting away your race's number 1 weakness

hell, im elvaan and im 5/8MP soon to be 8/8; laregely for my blm and later blu, pld is only 60 so you may want to give robert's pld experience more attention than mine but as a low mp race i know i've wanted a few more mp rather frequently

im hoping judai (taru pld) will give some anecdotes from the other side of the spectrum

in any case, there's tons of hp -> mp gear and vice versa, it's not like you're stuck at 16xx HP

Not everyone has an Gjallarhorn BRD and RDM combo with an Ares's Cuirass for 13 MP a tick.

Anyway for the OP, a little more Homam will help with the MP and HP. Stuff is fantastic for the MP pool. (Need more for my Galka's BLU.)

Galka here, and I'm going balls deep in MP because of 2 reasons.

1: If you ever, EVER level another job that uses magic it helps so much.
2: I only have 2 pieces of Homam, and Omega isn't dropping his fucking legs.

The only time I ever had problems with MP management was leveling up, in the days before Autorefresh, Parade Gorget, MP equipment that wasn't shit, Sanction, ...shit, the list goes on. The only time I ever have had issue end game with MP is when my RDM turns into and can't be bothered to remember to refresh me before trying and failing to paralyze and slow I mobX.

But primarily if you ever level another job that uses MP, especially at low levels, its so very noticeable the difference it makes.

MP merits are outstanding for pld on any race except taru. For elvaan and galka however, they are damn near a life saver. Yes sometimes you wont be taking much damage and youll have ballad and refresh, but 80% of the other time you are struggling to walk the line between mp management and death (at least for me, I low man alot of things). As a hume pld with just about everything a pld could want (no excal/dring), I sit around 1500hp and 550 mp in my /nin setup, and around 1600 hp and 450 mp in my /war setup.

Having an extra 80 mp will help you on all your jobs more than 80hp. Think of it like this:

80 hp is almost a cure4, so by meriting mp your gaining nearly another 300hp through cures. As a galka, I dont see much in the game that will one shot you from 1600 hp.

I think MP merits are a good idea. Although I went 8/8 HP merits on my PLD (did this ages ago), I have regretted it since. Not regretted it enough to change it though..

Maxing out your HP is only really important for moves like citadel buster. Most of the time you should be ok sitting on about 1400-1500 HP. Having more MP to spare you help with hate. As everything seems to be tanked using /NIN nowadays, I'd say having more MP available is better than maxing out your HP.

what are your other jobs? merit according to those as you cant really go wrong on pld meriting either. if you lv a mage go full mp, if your other jobs are dds like sam or mnk, well hp is just that much cooler! DO YOU HAVE DRK, if so go hp ;D

if you /war tank id go hp since it will help more, if you /nin most go mp, but again as stated you get no less than 8mp/tic in any ls thats doing hard stuff, brd+rdm+ your gear is enough to keep you maxing mp really.

Well personally, I'm sat at 6/2 MP/HP. Mostly because I don't feel like getting another 10 merits to replace those two HP, I do intend on eventually going 8/8 MP though. Even as a Mithra, I find myself wanting MP more than I want HP. I'm usually sat at around 1400~1450 HP when /nin tanking, with nearly *600* MP. With that kind of MP pool to draw on, I can almost guaranteedly secure hate on any mob, no matter what the rest of my alliance is doing. The only time MP merits don't come in handy is when the mob you're fighting deals no damage.

Btw, get a cure3/4 swap. If you do either of those, you'll be thanking god you merited that 80 MP. Can make such a huge difference.

Galka and went 3 HP / 5 MP, partly because of BLU, but also figured 50 MP is a Cure 3 for someone in the alliance and to get me more hate.

I'm a Hume, used to be main NIN/DRK for my old LS and have 4/4 HP and MP merits. Honestly, I don't regret it one bit, except when I'm being outparsed by other DRKs (DRK is one of my jobs, too). On PLD, I have about 1300 and 470MP in regular PLD/NIN gear, which is more than enough. I think once you pass 350 MP, anything else is not necessary.

I havent really had a problem with HP in a long while as a hume PLD. Most of the times I die is because of really crazy shit that comes out of left field (ie. Cerb triple attacking > ullulation > Breath while im casting Ichi). Sure with 200 more HP I probly would have lived, but incidents like this seem so rare I just don't worry that much about it.

MP merits aren't a bad idea at all. I'm a hume and did nin/drk for my old LS and the mp was nice, on my other toon (Galka Pld) I wish to god i had merits in mp. Homan will help you out, like others have said.

Galka PLD here, and I'm 8/8 MP merits and absolutely love it and wouldn't have it any other way. 440 MP on PLD/NIN sure is sexy for a galka.
