IMO Do not go see this movie, I don't have high expectations for a movie but this fell far far short even if you run with the idea of what is happening might actually happen.
Oh and uh,..
[spoiler:g30m9roe]Mark Wahlberg sucked in this movie, I have seen his other movies and they were decent but this one he dropped the ball, he tried too much to be cool and act like a teacher when teachers don't act anything like that outside of class, at least the ones I know.
That and the whole premise of the movie was paper thin explanation, it randomly happens for 24 hours then stops? When was the last time a virus or whatnot just said "its 24 hours time to stop", such a stupid way to have it happen that and the fact that the area it happened that the virus or whatever didn't spread to a larger area and keep going across the states and it just randomly shows up in another country 3 months later is kinda stupid.
Overall the movie was a disappointment and I suggest if your reading this and haven't seen it to save your money.[/spoiler:g30m9roe]
This movie sucked. I got so pissed when they revealed the twist. It was just so contrived.
This was not one of Mark Wahlberg's better movies. His acting didn't seem to fit and a lot of the dialogue seemed shoe-horned in. I think the most entertaining part of the movie was when he was talking to a plastic plant.
The premise was interesting but the movie falls short on delivery. Not to mention there is a super cliche ending. Save your money and avoid this film.
The only M. Night movie I even remotely liked was Unbreakable.
Good for a handful of laughs but thats it. Marky Mark's acting was laughable. Literally.
My girlfriend & I are actually big M. Night fans. We love all of his movies, and think that they're quite refreshing when compared to most crap that comes out. So, in eager anticipation, practically wetting ourselves, we went to see The Happening yesterday evening.
Holy crap, what a piece of trash. The "twist" in my opinion, was expecting M. Night to make another awesome film, and it actually being the biggest piece of shit of the summer.
I guess ill go see this tonight and hope that it's better then The Strangers.
Skipping this one.
Saw Kung Fu Panda last week, thumbs up
Seeing Incredible Hulk tonight, fuck yeah.
I'm a sucker for lame twists and all, but what the fuck?
[spoiler:3jgmquc3]Did they even explain why it only attacked the Northeast? I'm not even sure if you can call the twist an actual twist, what the fuck did they reveal? that the "toxin" had shifted to another location?
Ending according to wiki:
and it is assumed that this is the full attack which will take place worldwide as was theorized on a news channel.[/spoiler:3jgmquc3]
Also, why the shit did this get an R rating? They didn't even show people popping themselves in the head; I think the only "gory" part was the old lady bashing her head through the window. Did anyone else not get the scene with the girl stabbing herself in the neck? my theater completely left that out.
M. Night is a one-trick pony. It's sort of depressing he peaked with the Sixth Sense. Sure, he's made other movies, but what was so novel was his twist ending, but then maybe he felt shoehorned into making movies with a twist ending after the Sixth Sense was so successful. Instead of trying to replicate the success and format of his first movie, which he has done unsuccessfully a few times (Unbreakable, the Village, Lady in the Water), he needs to focus himself back on telling a compelling story. If the twist comes, it comes, if not, don't worry about it.
All of you people who are trashing the twist in this movie have been epically whooshed by M. Night. If you even for one second think of saying something about how shitty the twist was, M. Night is laughing at you. He punked you.
This was fucking awesome. My brother and I left the theater tipping our hats to M. Night. After the piles of shit that were Signs and Lady in the Water, we went in looking for lulz, and lulz we received. However the lulz were not at how shitty the movie was, but at how M. Night just owned our faces.
The twist:
[spoiler:1ysucbac]There is no fucking twist. You are fucking told up front what is going on, and M. Night makes you look for shit the whole movie that isn't there because you come in the door looking for a twist.[/spoiler:1ysucbac]
Fucking awesome.
I don't think the lack of twist is the reason why people hate it. Its just a terrible movie overall.
Meh, some reviews are trying to make it out like M. Night is trying to push an environmental message with this film... Those are the ones he whooshed, the ones who go in thinking they know something they don't, spend the whole movie looking for it, and then bitch when it isn't there. I was impressed overall. I went in looking to try and work the twist out before it showed up just like everyone else, and got punked for doing it. I deserved it, and so did everyone else.

What does he need to explain?
If anyone else did a film with an open ending that is left to the viewer's interpretation it gets called creative. Because M. Night did it, it is now trite and contrived. Whatever.
He didn't own anyone by not explaining, in detail, in triplicate, every minor plot point in one syllable words. He owned people who went in with this smug expectation of being able to divine his twist.
The point is... there is no twist. So if you start talking about the twist in this movie, I dunno what to say. It isn't there.
Smug expectations? what the fuck? every movie he's made, had a major twist; he essentially cockblocked everyone by answering absolutely nothing and churned out one of the worst endings in recent film history. He didn't own anyone by not explaining, in detail, in triplicate, every minor plot point in one syllable words. He owned people who went in with this smug expectation of being able to divine his twist.
The movie essentially boiled down to;
Mass suicides > Plants are the cause > Unknown reason (revenge for humans abusing the planet?) > Suddenly stops > Attacks elsewhere (final/major attack claimed by the dude on the TV show?)
Open endings are super except, when the main questions in the middle of the movie are left open for interpretation.
Edit: The old lady at the end was just retarded, why did she go apeshit at him looking at the fucking doll?
I've never laughed harder in a theatre than when I saw Cabin Fever for who-the-fuck-knows-why. The whole thing was like a joke on the audience and a joke on Rider Strong (lol).Originally Posted by blister1

It was a bit suspensefull but nothing really stood out enough to make me care very much for it, but as far as movies go, it's worth watching once i suppose. It's really nothing special, and like Melchiah sead, it has no twist, you'll get who was behind "The Happening" pretty early on.
