Yeah, I played Nier on hard and didn't need to grind at all. You only need to grind a ridiculous amount if you want the platinum.

Ah, I see, thanks. Those Sidequests must really be a pain in the ass though, lol. Still looking very forward to playing it though! I'll probably skip plat though depending on how annoying the sidequests are.

It's one of those plats where you spend an extra 40-50 hours just mindlessly grinding shit outside of the story content. I'm still trying to determine if I want to bother doing plat for it or not. I'll be doing all the endings at any rate.

only game I'm really playing right now is Radiant Historia. was lukewarm on it at first but it's growing on me. starting to feel like this is a must-play for any RPG fans that own a DS (which should be all RPG fans by default) as it started off good and is only getting better. and the battle system is just awesome, there's something about shoving all your enemies into a big pile, launching them into the air, and blasting them all with spells that's very entertaining.

Why? It's not like there's very many good ones in comparison to any other system this gen.

I've played slightly more good RPGs on DS than psp. And I rarely see good jrpgs on consoles these days so I'd agree with Yuri in this case in terms of owning a DS if you love your rpgs.

i was prepared for the half naked lolis when i read about it coming out, the article i read on it had pictures. my bf was like 'is there something i need to know about you?', haha. i'm excited, though. the thing that's annoying me about rorona is i think i need to use a guide to get astrid's ending - i tried writing down a list of all the events that were necessary and just using that, but i didn't get the ending! blah. hate using guides to play through an entire game.

i agree with oravis, it's totally true that good jrpgs don't seem to come out for consoles anymore. i do have a ds, but i've ended up playing more on psp, for some reason. radiant historia sounds good, though!

The only hard thing about hitting the plat in ATQ is if you mess up one of the 100% cosmosphere trophies on your first runthrough. That easily adds another playthrough, but other than that you can set it up to get all 4 of the other true ends off of a single save on a NG+.

I suppose it depends, first playthrough, leveling, getting every treasure chest and 100%ing a cosmosphere + getting to level 99 clocked me in at around 40-something hours, with a couple of those hours idling. NG+ though I managed to work it down to where I could go from Phase I to Phase IV in the neighborhood of 6-8 hours with all the text on skip.

The game is a decent length for an RPG with a good chunk of replay value, but you'll definitely have to leave the game idling for a sizable chunk of hours if you're looking to get the 100 hours played trophy. Also, the "save the game 100 times" trophy is probably the worst idea for a trophy anyone has ever had.

40 hours isn't bad. but, there's a save the game 100 times trophy? hahaha. that's so... pointless. i'm paranoid about making sure i save, so i save a lot more than i need to- i don't think i'll have a problem getting that one!

DS seems to be the system to own this generation for RPGs, though I guess that's mainly JRPGs - obviously not a lot of stuff like Fallout or Bioshock on the DS.

if you're a fan of shit like Atlus and Squenix though... oh yeah, DS all the way, with PSP in second place.

I dunno if I'd put the DS ahead of the PSP. They're both filled with an unfortunate amount of ports too which doesn't help, I just personally feel the PSP has much higher quality RPGs than the DS does. Though the DS definitely has a few gems too like Mario & Luigi RPGs, TWEWY, etc. And I'm really not sure why you'd say Atlus and Squeenix puts you in the DS camp. Square's PSP line is vastly better than their DS. I'm not a fan of Atlus though so I might be forgetting something... but don't they only have the SMT dungeon crawler and now Radiant Historia? Then again I only know of the three Persona games by them on the PSP too so I guess they don't really have a strong line up on either.

Atlus has more than that. Knights in the Nightmare, Super Robot Taisen OG Saga, the Luminous Arc games, Dark Spire, and a few others I'm probably forgetting. Of course SE and a few others have also made quite a few JRPGs for the DS though. XSEED and SE do have a stronger lineup on PSP though, I won't deny that. In terms of strategy JRPGs though I probably haven't played one more addicting on a handheld than FFTA2 and Covenant of the Plume wasn't so bad either. Fact is, if you love JRPGs you should own both handhelds really.

it really kind of makes me sad, though, that most of the jrpgs are on handhelds now. i've never been big on handhelds. has anyone tried hooking up the psp to a tv? i was looking into it when i got a new psp but i've been distracted by other games.

PSP might be in first place, I dunno. general chatter I've heard is that the DS is the superior system for RPGs, but that may be wrong, and counting them up on each side sounds boring to me. either way they're both in the lead over consoles. although I'm wondering if we will ever start to see more JRPGs on PSN and XBL, if cheaper development costs is what's keeping them on handhelds.

cheaper development costs might be necessary, i think the audience for rpgs has shrunk quite a bit since the good old days of psx. or, maybe it hasn't and just didn't grow as much as it could have, but it definitely seems like a smaller percentage of the people that play games nowadays.

I think JRPGs and Japanese gaming as a whole is definitely in a lot of trouble if JP devs don't start embracing XBL/PSN and other downloadable games (such as iphone) as much as western devs have. It doesn't feel like we're seeing anywhere near as much of an indie explosion on the downloadable services from the Japanese compared to NA/EU studios, and without a shift toward digital distribution you're going to see studios continue to consolidate (this has already begun to happen) until there's only 2-3 big ones and not much else, which means less games in general and probably less risky console releases like RPGs

it also means less competition so less drive to make great games. squaresoft and enix produced better games before they merged.
