I kind of know what you mean. I enjoyed Fallout 3/New Vegas, but I just can't seem to get into Oblivion. I mean, I want to like it, it just doesn't click.
If you're talking PC...tried the Witcher? It's dirt cheap these days, and CD Projekt have busted their asses improving it since the original release. (sequel next week if you like it)
If you liked Dragon Age Origins, try Neverwinter Nights 2 (if you haven't). Original campaign + first expansion (Mask of the Betrayer) are sort of connected, making for something of an epic game. Much like the Witcher, a fair bit of the complaints you might see in reviews were addressed and fixed since then.
Also, if you're looking for more like Mass Effect, KoTOR obviously (or Jade Empire if you want your combat to be beat-em-up style), again assuming you haven't played them.
Character portraits sure are. Stupid early CG D:<Planescape is never dated.
That said, most of the old Bioware/Black Isle games have tweaks/hacks to run them at higher resolutions than originally, which helps the look of them a fair bit.
Got Castlevania: SoTN from PSN (back when, you know, it worked..), then bought MvC3 and forgot about it. Started again and can't put it down. So ashamed I never played this great game before. Also started Legend of Dragoon at the request of the wife. Combat is fun but a bit long so far, story is interesting enough though. Still have RE4 and Zelda: TP collecting dust on my shelf....
Also been toying around with Torchlight. Very impressed with the game right now. Torchlight 2 is supposed to be hitting this summer, I plan on snagging it up. The dev team for Diablo 1 and 2 were also the ones that made Torchlight, you may want to give that a try Mioko
never played any SMT games before?
I think I saw NWN 2 plus some expansion or whatnot at Big Lots for $3.. worth it?
Also, someone mentioned WA: Crossfire (XF) -- just want to reiterate that game was pretty challenging in some ways..but it's been ages since I've touched it. Any tips there?
Currently I'm still trying to finish Resonance of Fate. It grows on you after a bit. Definitely unique. And definitely hilarious at points.
Playing through Skygunner on PS2 again recently, no idea why it wasn't more popular. Had a crazy nostalgia hunger to play Bust A Groove the other day too.
Finished LoH:Tits on PSP and it is definitely my favorite jrpg on any handheld. It's too bad I know the next one probably won't come out here for at least another year or so. Finally started on Tactics Ogre on PSP. It seems to be more difficult than I remember the ps1 game being but then again I remember a ridiculous amount of stone throwing being done on ps1 that I haven't had to do at all in this.
Not playing much right now, but come Tuesday that will change. I don't know what to play first. Witcher 2 or LA Noire. After work/gym I only have about 3 hours to myself before I go to sleep and that's before turning on Yankees baseball. I can't decide!!
2am - Boot up Mount & Blade: With Fire & Sword
3am - Check out the multiplayer after getting stuck in single
4am - Move onto Warband since it's apparently superior, notice this mod called 'cRPG', download & install
8:30am - Still playing cRPG mod on this one server...need....sleep.....
Well, after cleaning up some old pile of disks, I found my copy of Vandal hearts. After the Joygasm I had from finding it I am now playing it. /dance.
Doom II Hell on Earth on Ulrta-Violence difficulty
Just got myself a PS3 now all of that shit has blown over.
What games would you guys recommend in the RPG genre?
Because you need PSN to play RPGs.
Valkyria Chronicles, Eternal Sonata.
Star Ocean 4 is ok, Disgaea 3 is good if you're into that
3D Dot Heroes is... unique. It feels a lot like old school zelda.
Resonance of Fate I haven't played yet but is supposedly good.
Can't think of any others atm ;( if you meant WRPGs, uh, can't help you there.
Echoing Valkyria Chronicles and Eternal Sonata, since those are the best in my eyes (if you discount Tales of Vesperia anyway, since that's only in Japanese). Other than that... Folklore, Demon's Souls. Maybe Fallout 3/New Vegas/Oblivion if you haven't already played those, though all are obviously much better suited for PC.
Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgement is a pretty good PSN download, White Knight Chronicles is... okay, other than that I think all of the notable stuff has already been listed aside from maybe FFXIII if you don't have a 360, but that game's hit or miss. Some love it, some hate it. (was a miss for me). There's other RPGs you may enjoy but these are the ones that have more of a chance of being a hit than a miss, I think.
EDIT: Oh yeah, also the Dragon Age games if you don't already have those on something else.
DS is all you need, that's a man's game.
