since I don't really know much about all the new-fangled doodads the kids have these days, what does adding the custom firmware even do for you past letting you torrent games(I'm assuming that's the main point of it)?

Went to my local BuyBacks, love that store. Prices on games are so low and I can't seem to leave without buying at least one. Anyway, impulse bought Singularity 'cause I'm a sucker for time travel/manipulation/what have you. Definitely liking it so far. I didn't check the trophy list (usually do that after I beat it to avoid spoilers) but I don't think I'm going to be able to beat it on the hardest difficulty if it's needed for platinum

The 4Ps: Pirating games, patching games (lolJP), portable emulation, and plugins. That's about it.

Notable plugins include FusaSCR to take screencaps, and RemoteJoy to output video via USB to a PC, popular with streaming since PSP's TV-out sucks a large load.

RemoteJoy can cause slowdown in a lot of games too, but you can increase the run speed of the PSP using custom firmware to offset that in 99% of games. But as Kaisha said, it's great for patching games (translation patches namely), using homebrew (emulators, homemade games, etc) and there's a bunch of cool plugins available. Outside of the ones he mentioned, cwcheat comes to mind, essentially an Action Replay for PSP games if you will. Whilst I don't tend to use it for real "cheats", it's a cool thing to have available in some games. In my recent replay of Tales of Eternia I was dicking around with Debug mode which let me fight some solo bosses with characters you normally wouldn't be able to use, etc.

If you mean tips, like, how to play the game, then one would be; don't kill everything you see. RE0-3 aren't action oriented like RE4/5. Ammo is very limited. Enemies don't drop items, so you only get what's laying around. Only kill what you can't run around/dodge. Save ammo to your good guns for bosses.

Oh, and play RE: Code Veronica if you haven't/weren't going to already. It explains what Clair does after RE2 and also how Wesker got all powerful and shit.

I won't lie, even something as simple as a SNES emulator on my PSP with Shin Megami Tensei I & II (translated by the wonderful Gideon Zhi) would be awesome.
    It's really really really easy.

Look for the topics about the psp on I think it was the tech forum, I recently(ish) helped a few people do it, it's incredibly fucking simple.

As long as you're not on like a psp go or the latest psp's ever, all you have to do is manually run an update (that you download) that puts you on like 6.something official firmware, and then you just run the CFW on top of it, it's that easy. No "need GTA or some special game to use an exploit" or anything like that.

Still playing Dungeon Fighter Online, but on the verge of saying ftg. Got my 500 victory points and that was only 1/5 of the quest. The rest involved some torture that makes Pandemonium Warden seem kind of lenient. The second leg of the quest involves King's Relic, which is the first of many ancient dungeons that require a quest item for every time you enter. Not too bad, (especially since the items stack) but the actual dungeon is insane. Each room has a knight that has a very specific attack pattern that's obviously designed to present a challenge while pissing you off:
Guardian Maelstrom- Fast as hell and runs around the room like a maniac while fading in and out of visibility. If you don't attack him constantly, he'll turn completely invisible and teleport around the stage raping you. Not the hardest, but can be annoying since his invisibility can be difficult for characters that rely on summons... like me!
Guardian Aegis- Constantly maintains an aura that shifts into being weak to magic or physical attacks while the opposite will heal him and damage you. For me, he's the most annoying since my attacks deal so much damage and fully heal him while killing me in one hit. As his life bar(s) get lower he shifts between auras even faster making it more difficult to kill him without healing him. One time, I patiently waited to time his auras while hiding in a corner and summoned 10 landrunners, 5 time bombs, a sparrow factory and my tempester to spike him to death, but his aura shifted too fast and I killed myself and fully healed him.
Guardian Rime- Not as bad as Aegis, but can be a big pain if you're not prepared. He uses ice based attacks, and constantly summons an ice wave that travels along the ground and will freeze you with a 90% rate. When you're in a party he'll say "This attack is for you (your name here)" and the ice wave will chase that person, but if you're alone (or most likely everyone else died) guess what?
Guardian Cinder- I really hate this guy. He has a fire aura that will deal constant burn damage if you get close to him. If that's not bad enough whenever you hit him, you get a flame marker and after 5 markers you explode for some pretty nasty damage. Also if someone isn't hitting him constantly, he'll actually grow larger, get faster and gain the ability to reflect any damage you do to him back in armor ignoring fire damage.
Guardian Lumi- From the bottom of my heart, all the way down to my taint: fuck this guy. Remember the Ahriman from FFXI that you had to look away from to avoid his attack? Imagine him and Flash Man had a love child on steroids. Lumi will use his special attack (and quite often) that will cause the screen to flash and stun you if you're not looking away. After the flash attack, lightning will rain down on you in a pattern that's difficult to avoid even if you weren't stunned. If that's not enough, after you take off a good chunk of his life, he'll summon multiple clones of himself that all have the same attack and use it at different intervals. Either way, you're going to get struck by lightning or stunned and then struck by lightning so pick your poison.
Hammer King Borodin- By far no where near as hard as the 5 guardians but can royally piss you off all the same. Borodin's attacks have a very deceptive long reach and have an insanely high stun rate. When he's at about 1/2 health he'll summon an army of knights that move pretty fast and will mob around the King making it hard to hit him. This isn't that bad until you realize that all bosses in this game have a high regen rate if they're not being attacked and Borodin's regen rate is twice as fast. Also when he gets low on health he'll slam his hammer on the ground 3 times damaging and knocking down anything that's on the ground. And on top of that, he's constantly in a super armor state, so he can't be interrupted, thrown, grabbed, or stunned. Enjoy...

So after dealing with that hell hole of a dungeon (did I mention 3 times?) it's on to collecting materials to build a portal for the Gaebolg mech to enter from. Not as bad as the last quest, but expensive as hell, everything totaled to being ~3,000,000 or so. There goes part of my nest egg I started towards my rare avatar upgrades. So after you build the actual portal for your own personal giant robot to give you a brofist while doing his best Blodia impression, you think you're done right? Hell no! Apparently the portal doesn't have a reliable power source, so you have to go get the heart from a giant robot boss called Hyper Mecha Tau in another ancient dungeon: Vilmark - Area 50, or as I like to call it, Rage Quit Land!
Maybe Vilmark isn't as bad as King's Relic, but it has it's own set of problems. First of all, before you can even unlock Vilmark, you have to do a quest that involves asking various npcs if they've seen "anyone suspicious." Eventually this leads you to a npc you met at the very beginning of the game named Danjin. Instead of answering your question, he decides you have to test your luck and gives you a capsule and says if it contains a doll of him, he'll answer your question. Of course you get a doll of a npc named Bucken which is a sign of bad luck, but since Danjin is such a good sport, you're welcome to try again. Wait, what's this? Only the first capsule is free? Of course, that would be too easy, but wait there's more. Instead of wanting money, he wants money and some moderately rare materials in exchange for another capsule, but just to be fair, if you get 5 bucken dolls, you get to exchange them for another capsule. Not surprised this is coming from a guy who says "You have to spend money to make money!" every time you walk past him. So after another 2 million and 20 Bucken dolls later, it's finally off the Vilmark - Area 50, after collecting some more quest items just to enter of course. So I only need one Mecha Tau Heart to finish the quest and become a Machinist and other classes need 3-5 items for their awakening? Not a bad deal. One capsule + one Vilmark run = 1 Mecha Tau Heart? Hell no! That'd be too easy. Instead, you're forced to team up with other like minded party members looking for their own quest items in the same place, but at least there's higher leveled players willing to help you... for a moderate fee.
First party I set up had two other level 50+ players who all needed awakening items, not too bad at least it was a Launcher and a necromancer that could probably solo the damn place lol. But I wanted the fill that 4th slot with another lvl 50+ but instead the other two wanted to hire somebody out of laziness. So they invited a lvl 70 Asura that charged us all 50k a head before we entered the dungeon and on top of that, he suggested King's Road (hard mode) for a higher drop rate. (and an extra 20k per person in his pocket) As soon as we entered, he conveniently got disconnected and we were forced to fend for ourselves on on King's Road. Of course the Launcher was geared for PVP instead of PVE and crumbled like the paper tiger he was, and the Necromancer didn't learn her best skill and they both died in the first room leaving me to solo the damn place instead of using their revive tokens and blaming me for everything. Somehow I made it through the army of kamakaze goblins, bloodthirsty Lugarus and made it to the boss while the launcher and necro continued to taunt me the whole way. I got mecha tau down to 25% and actually started to think to myself "maybe I can do this" but of course, that was just a tease, he summoned an army of megaphone wielding landrunners, kamakaze goblins, mini tau, and tau gaurds, that literally mowed me down in seconds. After a few more failed runs that failed from people blaming it on lag and butthurting about how much mechanics suck when I did most of the work, I rage quit for the rest of the day with a whopping 100 gold left.
Later on I decided to log back in and one of my lvl 70 guild buddies offered to help me, I had one last item, so what the hell? So we made it all the way through, and he killed Mecha Tau with one awakening attack (hyper combo) and guess what? The heart didn't drop. I looked it up and found out it's a 15-20% drop rate and there's people that had to go on 50+ runs to get it. So completely broke, I cleaned out the rest of my alt characters and spent everything on entering Vilmark. 29 runs later, and still no Tau Heart lol.... FTG... at least for now....

I must say that ever since I've quit FFXI, I've had a really hard time getting into any game's multiplayer feature, but Assassin's Creed Brotherhood MP is simply ADDICTING AS HELL... I honestly can't believe that I haven't tried playing it until a few days ago... tons of fun.

Jesus Christ. You have my sympathy, that sounds absolutely retarded. I'm half glad that EU never got Dungeon Fighter now, even though I've always wanted to give it a shot.

Most of that was a rant, but it's still a fun game. This is probably the first time I had to deal with anything that frustrating so far and it came in full. I'm going in for round two in a few minutes, just hope people aren't retarded as they were yesterday. You might get a chance to give it a try soon:

Totally picked up Duke Nukem Forever for the PS3 against my own judgement, and I'm totally enjoying it.
    Spoiler: show
Well ok, the $29 price tag helped a lot also.

I seem to enjoy a lot of elements the reviewers hated such as the vehicle/platforming bits. Change of pace from just going into battle after battle as you move from location to location.

Seems the retail product has some form of anti-aliasing also, because the demo was jaggy as fuck compared to what I'm seeing. Gearbox working on a patch also for DLC/tweaks, PC users getting 4-weapon limit instead of 2. All I could use is something to alleviate the load times on my PS3.

So I logged in to DFO for another set of attempts for my awakening item to advance me from Mechanic to Machinist. Sold some hell mode items and got 5 keys to enter Vilmark again. Got picked up by a party consisting of a Necromancer (good one this time) a Battlemage, and a Slayer that hasn't done Vilmark before lol. Got wiped on the first run, because the slayer aggrroed a mob of kamikaze goblins in the second room, Got mobbed by bloodthirsty lugaru on the second run, on the 3rd and 4th runs we got to the room before the boss, and I buffed up and spammed an army of bots to take out Mecha Tau, but no drops.
With one key left and a measly 12k remaining all hope seemed lost as we went in one last time... and triggered Hell Mode. (not a good start) So when we got to the room before the hell portal everyone said don't use AoE because we might trigger the Hell party on accident, we didn't trigger the portal, but everyone wiped by another mob of lugaru because my invisible didn't fully cast before entering the room. So, it was down to me and the Battlemage as we buffed up and prepared to go balls to the wall and spike Mecha Tau. I spammed every robot in my arsenal: Sparrow Factory, Mech Drop, Tempester, Viper, and in a blink of an eye the son of a bitch went down and....
    Spoiler: show

    Finally got the damn thing!

Even got a new title too:

I wish, it's a 2 minute cooldown time like most awakenings. It should've been spamable back in the day since it was physical attack% based and no one ever learned it unless to show off. But since the Act VIII update, it got converted to fixed magical (roughly 8000 at level 1) and rapes everything with up to 8 hits. Even with the massive cooldown, it's still an ungodly OP attack with all the +INT and +Magical Attack% and +Piercing Magical attack gear that only Mechanics and Machinists can get. That was a terrible Gaebolg in that video since I haven't had experience luring mobs in for more hits to connect, but you get the picture. This attack literally made me want to become a Mechanic in the first place, so I'm going to see how much I can beef it up. Haven't looked it up yet, but I think there's some otherverse gear that can cut down the cooldown or something.

ended up picking up a PSP and a bunch of games. haven't bothered with CFW yet and probably won't need to for a while, lol. though I'm sure I will eventually.

    games I bought:
    Dracula X
    Tactics Ogre
    FFT
    FFIV Complete
Dissidia Duodecim (only $5 less than the first Dissidia... I thought that was funny)
    Crisis Core
    VP Lenneth
    Star Ocean First
    Star Ocean Second

also picked up a copy of Advent Children because why not at $7? I haven't seen it yet anyway.

was going to pick up Brave Story but forgot, and the only place that had it is pretty far out of the way, so maybe another time.

also, I do not fucking understand Dissidia at all.

Got a copy of Misadventures of Tron Bonne on order via Amazon which was practically free through a vendor coupon. Might re-sell it on Ebay after I beat it or if I can find a decent torrent in time. Gave Megaman Battle Network a decent re-try, beat it but still don't like the whole trading card game feel to it. Heard the Gamecube version is more action based, so I might give it a try.

Since my awakening into a Machinist in Dungeon Fighter, I had the luckiest day ever: 8 insane hell mode dungeons, 2 pink weapons from hell dungeons, a Ranger McGee Card, 8 unique armor pieces, a +8 legacy weapon from a pot I got as a quest reward and another legacy weapon from the Tower of Illusion. Everything should total to ~23 million which will made me break even on what I spent on my awakening quests. Gunner Avatar have dropped in value recently, so I might load up on some advanced pieces and bind them into a rare set, or work on my chronicle set. (kind of like Relics in FFXI) In the meantime, I'm flat broke until everything sells and I had to make a couple of alt characters just to sell the stuff in the auction house. Speaking of which, FFXI Auction House > DFO Auction house. Instead of just a sales history like in FFXI, you see a list of items sold it various prices. So literally people will undercut you to hell if they're extremely impatient. For example, the Ranger McGee Card is worth 1.2~1.5 million but I've been undercut as low as 200k. If I had the money, I'd probably buy them all out and squat on the cards until the auction house is empty and drive up the price again.

Also, I made a pretty late discovery: I should have been an Exorcist! Male Gunner was the first class I saw when I first discovered DFO so I naturally gravitated to that, later on I saw how badass Gaebolg Punch was and that sealed the deal on being a Mechanic. I haven't plaid any other characters outside of the gunner class but decided to make a Priest to kill some time before a guild event. I don't know how the other remaining classes (mage, fighter, thief, and slayer) work in terms of builds but the Priest's sub classes (Crusader, Monk, and Exorcist) are the most flexible classes out of any MMO I've played. There's so many different combinations of skills to pick from based on your own playing style. Just from watching some pvp matches, no two exorcists are ever the same. So far, I've made 3 Exorcists: Physical based, magical based, and a hybrid. Not sure which one I like the most yet, but there's so much to factor in from magical or physical skills, armor, buffs, summons, and even what weapon and weapon passives skill you want. At this point, I might need to get a Lethe's Contract just to play around with skill combinations or else I'll be making priests for months until I get used to a decent skill set. In any case, I have ~18 more levels to max out my Machinist, but I've definitely found what character I want to play as next.
