Currently got a few games on my plate.
PC: Bioshock 2, ME2, WoW
Xbox 360: Gears 3, NHL '12
PS3: Killzone 3, MLB the Show '12, RE4, Metal Gear 2
Only played a rental of it. Game isn't exactly easy to get nowadays, nor do I hook my GCN/Wii up. Only real experience I've had with RE1 was the damn good DS port. Having a map up on the top screen 24/7 helps a lot......., that and 180 turns.
On a separate subject, anyone got a versions.txt for PSP to spoof latest version? Seems Sony got smart with the PS3 and makes it ensure your PSP is up-to-date to copy games over. I want portable RE1/2/3 without having to redownload them damnit!
No item box in RE0 sounds fucking horrible. On the RE subject, how was Code Veronica? I never played it, but it'll be on PSN next week for $10 w/ my PS+.
CV is good if you're a fan of the oldschool RE's (especially if you can get it for 10 bucks) but IMO the levels and story feel kinda uninspired. Some of the puzzles are really great though, and it's classic RE fun but I feel like some of the older titles are a little bit better.
Anyway RE0 isn't a bad game per se, the controls and graphics are on par with the REmake and even though the story is essentially pure fan service it's still engrossing enough to keep you playing. The ability to switch between characters to solve puzzles is a nice change of pace too, but unfortunately it's hard to overlook problems with item management. Each character only gets 6 slots (no side packs/upgrades either, and the shotgun takes up 2 spaces) and with no item boxes, you're constantly retreading old ground to find something or making trips to bring your grenade launcher and all the damn ammo for it, etc. I'd say it's still worth playing for sure, especially if you want to know what happened to Rebecca before RE1.
I'm currently playing RE4 HD myself too, and I just re-bought RE5 Gold (on newegg for 20 bucks!) for PS3 so I'll probably be replaying that soon. I just finished playing Parasite Eve 1 and 2 in between my classic RE marathon and now, both of those were pretty good although I thought 1 was a lot better (and a lot different, what the fuck happened between the 2 games at Square).
I've been finding lots of games cheap lately (spent 80 bucks total and got Splatterhouse, PoP Forgotten Sands, Vanquish, Lego Star Wars 3, Dante's Inferno, and Singularity) but I really want to finally play Siren: Blood Curse before I get cracking on those. And I'll probably end up getting the Ico/SotC Collection next week, fuck.
Shit, Ico/SoTC is next week? I don't have the budget for anything full price right now, especially with Dark Souls coming up. ><
I'll probably grab RE4/CV for $20 together since it's just dirt cheap and that I doubt Capcom will bother retail packaging it over here at the rate things are looking.
[EDIT] Woot, got the spoofer working on my PSP, go-go RE1 during Abyssea farm. Forgot how fucking hard this game was when you can't remember ammo locations to better conserve what you got.
Game looks a hell lot better on the smaller screen though, and I forgot Jill was easy-mode with her 8 inv slots.....
ahhh I didn't need to know about Ico/SotC... I haven't touched my PS3 in forever and getting it hooked back up is going to be annoying as hell. plus I need to buy a new dual shock so that's another $50. but I've never played either of those games so I really want this collection... fuck me, lol
also, question for Tales fans: between Eternia and Destiny, which is your favorite? I've gone round and round on this one because they're both great but in different ways. I feel like Destiny's characters are far more engaging with wittier dialogue and a more coherent plot, but the battle system and graphics in Eternia are superior, no question. oh and the bonus dungeon in ToD is one of my favorites of all-time; so many weird little secrets, so challenging, so rewarding. I don't think Eternia has anything that even comes close. maybe playing ToD remake would solve this dilemma for me... anyway I was just pondering that age-old question since I put them both on my PSP today.
and as long as I'm the subject of Tales, is Tales of the World for PSP worth checking out? the reviews haven't been too kind and I don't like what I hear about people joining and leaving your party left and right... but then again it's Tales, it can't be that bad, can it?
Just got Valkyria Chronicles. I know I'm behind with PS3 games but I'm catching up now! Prolly get Gundam Warriors 3 next paycheck. herpderp
I've only played Destiny:R, not the original, so my opinion is probably a little skewed. Personally I vastly prefer Eternia though(probably competes for my favourite Tales game along with Vesperia and Destiny 2). Just not a fan of the broken ass CC system. The game is fun (and vastly more fun than most RPGs even), I just don't enjoy it near as much as the other Tales games, I feel like the CC system as a whole was a step back for the series. Game just feels spammy, normal attacks are useless and by the end of the game you can break the battle system in half (though you can in Vesperia easily too I suppose). It did bring about some of my favourite Tales videos though...
As for Radiant Mythology, I played through 2 first and loved it. The quest system setup is pretty cruddy and you have to slog through boring sidequests to make the next story one show up, but the combat is as fun as ever and you get to throw together dream teams with a shit ton of Tales characters. I tried to play Radiant Mythology 1 (the only localized one) after and it just felt like too big a step back. It has an annoying system where Tales characters can outright refuse to join your party when you try to select them, which is annoying as shit. Aside from that it's still decent though. You'll probably enjoy it far more than I did given that you haven't played 2 or 3, so worth giving a shot for sure. If you're feeling ballsy though, I'd vastly recommend any of the other unlocalized ones over the RM games. PSP has great ports of Tales of Destiny 2 and Tales of Rebirth as well as the Narikiri Dungeon X remake which I really liked. Narikiri Dungeon X has a Phantasia port included too, with an upgraded battle system (plays much like Eternia) and a new character. If you don't mind some moonrunes, they're all great games (Narikiri Dungeon X has a great menu patch too).
I tried playing RM1, and as much of a Tales fan as I am, I just couldn't stomach it. I heard 2 and 3 were VASTLY superior, though, but I'd like my Japanese to improve a bit more before I try going through that one..also, question for Tales fans: between Eternia and Destiny, which is your favorite? In terms of ToD versus ToE, I'm torn. While Destiny has a special soft spot for me, I liked Eternia better as a game, and as an overall story. That being said.. I really didn't care for most of the characters. Farah was pretty annoying to me, Keel was whiny, I was indifferent to Meredy. Fog and Reid were ok, though. I have no idea what it was about them. They just didn't click with me.
sounds like the things you disliked about RM1 are exactly what I'm cautious about. I might download it if I get bored but it doesn't really sound worthwhile. what a dumb idea, making characters refuse to join you. the sequels sound fun though, and I doubt I'll be missing much by not understanding the plot, given that it's a Tales game and a sort of gaiden at that.
and I wish I could tell you to go back and play ToD but the gameplay is archaic - squarely in the SNES Phantasia camp. the dialogue is excellent and the characters are endearing as all hell, but it might not be worth it depending on what you want in a Tales game.
on the other hand, I actually liked the battle system in Hearts, so maybe I will check out ToD remake...
omg a hundred times this. hated Keel and Farah was obnoxious. Meredy was also annoying with her childish way of speaking, which was a pretty silly plothole as well - supposedly she spoke that way because of the translator but when you get to her world everybody else speaks just fine...
Farah is Godlike, peasants. Reid and Farah are probably 2 of the most fun character to play as imo throughout the series as a whole too.
Reid is fun as hell to play as... it's his personality that kills me. such a little twatburger. although he does get better toward the end of the game I guess.
keel, on the other hand, has no redeeming qualities whatsoever and should rot in hell for all eternity.
The original destiny didn't use the CC system >_>
Playing -as- them is fun. Storywise, the latter was annoying as hell. Reid isn't so much a bad character (I liked him) so much as he was surrounded by a lackluster cast.Farah is Godlike, peasants. Reid and Farah are probably 2 of the most fun character to play as imo throughout the series as a whole too.
On another note.. while Legendia probably tops the list for worst Tales games for some people, I really think they did a pretty good job of exploring the characters with the second half.
Finished off the last of the Plants vs. Zombies trophies, and dear lord did they take quite awhile to get. I wasn't expecting to spend 14-16'ish hours on this, but I did. Shame the PS3 port was ass. I was barely getting double-digit framerate after wave 6 on survival endless, made it hell to deal with waves 20+ because you can barely react with the cursor lag.
On another subject, been playing more of RE1 on my PSP. Enjoying it a little more after starting over and picking Jill solely because of her extra inventory. I really wasn't in the mood for mapping out the mansion for Barry in terms of puzzle/key inventory management.
Are there any tricks for dealing with the zombies quicker at any rate? When I go for the kill I usually end up wasting 5 bullets to make one keel over and hit the ground, then carefully get behind it and knife away until it's either dead, or getting back up (where I gun it some more). Knife overall appears fucking useless otherwise as it ends up with you getting grabbed by the zombie more often than not courtesy of its swing delay. For everything else (ravens, dogs) I just run.
Ammo is too scarce for me to risk using my shotgun for normal zombies, nor killing everything in my way with the pistol.
I'll probably grab a copy of REmake for the Wii after I complete RE1 as I completely forgot Capcom did a port of the GCN version to that, then off to RE2/3/CVX/4 afterwards.
Nexon fucked up the DFO server again and a shit ton of people can't log in, including me
I decided to play some more of the sega version of Shadowrun. I've already beaten the game as a Decker and a Street Samurai, so I decided to give the Gator Shaman a shot. The spells are fun to use, but I'd rather have access to the stuff mages and the other totem shaman use since you can't burn a hell hound. Haven't gotten too far into the story yet, but I accidentally got some of the better side quests unlocked when I was doing some high level matrix runs. Not sure if it's a glitch, but if they want to give me this guy http://mikesrpgcenter.com/shadowrun/npcs/stark.gif before I even reach the half way point in the game then by all means.
Sounds like a waste of ammo just leaving them half dead though, unless the game actually bothers saving the health status of each individual zombie? Guess I could try baiting them closer to the edge of a wall so I can run pass them with less chance of being grabbed.
