honestly that happened to me maybe once in the entire game. thing is, when you first enter an area you're going to run into enemies that abuse certain weaknesses, or use insta-death skills, but there is a very good chance you will survive your first encounter. after that, you either know what they're going to use or at least have a good idea depending on the enemy type, and you plan accordingly. keep in mind that you only die if the MC dies - most of the time if you get ambushed, random chance means your MC only has a 1/4 chance of being targeted, and even if he is targeted he probably won't die in one hit anyway. you survive, you adjust your techniques, you thrash the enemy. the only part I would truly call trial and error is the bosses, but there are ALWAYS save points right before them (and you can transmit between save points as well).

although, now that I think of it, I forgot to mention one huge, life-saving element of playing the game on Hard mode: Trafuri, the instant-escape spell. Nocturne is a game in which you really need to understand the value of running away or you will get creamed. I can only remember one encounter where I was mercilessly killed without a chance of survival, but I remember tons that ended with me at near-death; I ran away, healed up, possibly saved, and lived to see another day (with my XP and macca intact).

I got into a big debate with some loser over on gamefaqs about that game when he claimed it was "cheap" because of back attacks (there's a skill that prevents those), insta-death attacks (there are multiple skills as well as magatama that protect against them), and enemies that abuse your weakness with the press turn system (every. single. weakness has at LEAST one magatama that protects against it, as well as multiple skills that do the same. on top of that, guess what? you can abuse press turns too!). and the bosses? yes, they will kill you. expect it. the first attempt on any boss is a trial run to learn their attacks and weaknesses. once you die, reload your save, shuffle your team around, grind a bit if you must, fuse some new demons, and go teach that boss the meaning of the word "demi-fiend."

seriously. love. that. game. I would kill for a HD remake, too... it was the first thing I tried out on my LCD TV when I got it, and I wanted to return the TV lol. I didn't realize how ugly 480p looks on a high-def screen... what a shame.
You are not alone, would definitely go out of my way to platinum it. Let's pray for an Atlus HD releases, Nocturne DDS1/2 would be the most likely combos.

w00t. got my first hi-ougi. actually, Loni did one without my input. I guess you were right when you said action enchants matter even for the AI characters I need to wrap my head around some of these moon runes and figure out which skills extend into hi-ougis for Kyle, because that was fucking badass.

edit: nevermind, I got it... it's only the Tier 2 skills that extend into hi-ougis during SBM... and they only extend into hi-ougis; they don't have normal extensions. and the Tier 2 skills, for Kyle at least, are the ones with more than 3 characters. easy enough!

come to think of it I might be using the term hi-ougi wrong... idk. I'm referring to the attacks with the cut-ins.

Nope you're right about pretty much everything. All of your tier 2/arcane artes have different hi-ougi extensions. Kyle, Loni and Judas all get hi-ougi extensions for each of their arcane artes. Reala and Harold get 4 summon mystic artes that you can extend from their final tier of spells and Nanaly is just a useless fuck who gets one single hi-ougi that you can extend to from any base/intermediate spell.

sweet. it's just weird, I'm not used to Tales games where you're performing hi-ougis this early on. although I'm sure the later hi-ougis are insane Indignate Judgment-style awesomeness that put the beginning hi-ougis to shame.

Oh man I hope you use Loni long enough to see his final hi-ougi, so Godlike. Speaking of ones you won't see though, Judas gets a ballin' extension for his final hi-ougi you can randomly trigger on your 3rd playthrough or higher.

About to platinum inFamous. Has me wondering, does 2 have to do with that evil guy that Kessler warned you about? And how good is it compared to the first?

After inFamous, I'll finally start MGS1 to prepare for the HD collection.

    Spoiler: show
    The beast? Yeah it does.

I enjoyed inFamous 2, but it didn't click that well with me compared to the first. I missed the distinct street gangs and the scale of the game, inFamous 2 was tamed down in both aspects.

Ok, finally settled on a few games:

    1) Shadow of the Colossus. Game looks great in HD. I already played this once, and never realized you can get fruit/lizard tails to increase your health and stamina. Game is a lot more fun now that I have a reason to explore and some of the harder colossi are less frustrating. Dunno if I'll replay Ico just yet.

    2) Singularity. This game is surprisingly awesome. It reminds me of Bioshock in a lot of ways, with upgradable powers and weapons and powers you can use to solve puzzles and open up secret areas. It's super cheap now, it's nothing super special but it's a very solid power shooter so I'd definitely recommend it for fans of the genre.

    3) Dark Meadow. Kinda like Infinity Blade meets Bioshock with more emphasis on atmosphere and exploration. It's a bit easier than IB too so I like it a lot more to just pick up and play.

Speaking of which, I really need to actually beat Infinity Blade before IB2 comes out. For whatever reason I had a lot of trouble with IB, mostly because I insist on countering every strike instead of dodging.

Anyone played or going to play the HD remakes of the Metal Gear series? Thinking about picking it up, even if the graphics aren't that much better. Still need to finish the ICO/SotC remakes though!

I've actually been thinking of picking up both of those. I know it might make me sound like a heretic, but I've honestly never played either set of games. I missed a bunch of "classics" on the PS2, just due to limited free time to play stuff in.

Been considering picking up MGS collection as well, never got around to Peace Walker on the PSP, so there's some value in that for me. Well, that and 3 platinum trophies, although I get the feeling they'll be a total pain in the arse to get.

Would be nice to own a copy of MGS2 that isn't the PC port though. That thing is a complete ass to get running 100% on a modern PC.

Man.. Atlus and others need to hop on the HD re-release bandwagon and release SMT: III, DDS1/2 in an HD combo with trophies. Devil Summoner 1/2 and Persona 3/4 could also get their own. Would love to see Shadow Hearts re-released in HD as well, goddamn.

Oh, I'd love DDS in HD! D: Nocturne too of course, but I have a certain sentiment for this...
