This needs to be restated. I tried playing the games multiple times and couldn't get in to it. Gave it a more thorough chance the third time round and now I've sunk over 1000 hours in to MHFU and P3rd combined. I don't know which I'd recommend starting with though. P3rd is far and away more suited for a beginner, but if you enjoy it you might find you want to play MHFU (since it has tons more stuff to do, most of which isn't in P3rd) and going back to play that after P3rd is rough.

Thanks for the feedback. My PSPs hacked so I'm not even aware of whether I could play cooperatively. Still trying to decide on which, not sure I want to sink so so many hours in across all the games as I still have a fairly huge list of unplayed PSP greats.

currently in a love-hate relationship wiith Dissidia Duodecim. slogging my way through story mode. it wouldn't be so bad if there was a code that allowed me to pick my own character for the battles themselves; I find myself wishing every character was Prishe.

It's local multiplayer only by default. If you have a PS3 with a wired connection you can play with others using a PS3 app. I'd say play Portable 3rd if you're undecided. It has a bit less content and is WAY more beginner friendly (it's just a much better game overall, honestly). It was only released in Asia, but there's a full English patch so you don't need to worry about that, just a heads up when you're searching for a copy.

I will do that then, it sounds much more approachable.

As for playing, started Hexyz Force finally, really impressed with this game. Finished Crimson Gem Saga recently and really enjoyed it, but felt like it could've been more. Went from that to Lunar Silver Star Harmony and fucking killed myself in the really reals after a few hours. Fuck that game. Hexyz is so much more enjoyable in contrast.

Decided to try SMT:Nocturne again over the past couple days, got to Matador, suddenly remembered why I gave up on it years ago.

lol, you aren't the first and won't be the last. he's the first roadblock for most people.

Matador isn't so bad though, he's just the first challenge that requires specific preprations. wind resistance, media, and sukukaja/kunda (or better yet, fog breath) are pretty much mandatory. with all three of those your chances of winning skyrocket (although you can still get unlucky).

are you playing on normal or hard?

let me know if you want to continue on and need help - Nocturne is one of my favorites.

i'm playing on normal. and yeah, i figured out i need all of those things, and barring the wind-void magatama and a wind-drain nozuchi, i have precisely none of them. nothing i have or can fuse will get media or sukukaja, and as best i can tell the only thing i can recruit that can get sukukaja are pretas, which i think can only be done if i get lucky enough to encounter one during a full moon. i get the sinking feeling that i'm going to need several hours of grinding for my party to even be remotely viable in this fight.

    edit-

also, OST question if you happen to know: is it me, or is the battle theme from the matador fight not included on the JP 2-disc version? i've previewed all the tracks on there and can't seem to find it. which is pretty disappointing because that is a seriously bitchin' theme

I have no idea why, aside from the music... but I really LOVED Hexyz Force. I played through the game so many times with each character. I really really liked Ceci. Favorite generic RPG protag ever.

    dat double

Since BG made me double post... might as well post some Hexyz Force music. Favorite normal battle theme just because of what part of the game it is for.

had to do some research because I couldn't remember the exact demons. Nozuchi is a good choice. your other two should be:
    - Uzume (Pixie + Angel) nulls Force and has Media
    - Inugami has Media and Fog Breath, but is weak to force - recommended to recruit an Inugami and level it up until it evolves into Makami. Makami is no longer weak to force, will still have Fog Breath and Media, and is actually a very useful demon at that point in the game anyway

so yeah, it will require some grinding. if that bugs you, Nocturne might not be right for you. but do keep in mind that Matador is easily one of the worst non-optional bosses in the entire game. if you can beat him, you can beat Nocturne.

Odd that you brought Nocturne up. I loved that game, had that little mini guide book for it too. Wish I still did. I have been on a kick lately, hunting for old Shin Megami PS2 titles. Nocturne is on the list when I check out the local shops here as are Devil Summoner and Digital Devil Saga, having never played either of those series. So far, no luck.

nice, thanks! i've got uzume now, trying to find an inugami, and while the OSG says they appear in ginza, but i've yet to see one appear indoors or out. gonna have to try and fuse one i guess, but i have to restock on life stones since i got cleaned out recruiting for the uzume fusion (got dicked over 6x in a row, bleh).

no problem you've inspired me (along with my PS2 freezing on Playstation games) to replay the game.

    FFT 1.3

Been stuck on the solo wiegraf/belias fight for a few days. Worst part about it is that since you're on a save from a previous fight, you have to redo all of the prefight prep every fucking time. That was honestly the worst part.

Getting a working strategy to kill Wiegraf wasn't too bad. This is the only time I've been glad that swordskills have been nerfed to not be 100% accurate lol, Dragoon+reflex+as much evasion, and wiegraf would only have a 7% chance to hit me. I would just yell/focus spam a while, and make sure I was hasted before I killed him. Fucking hated when he would spawn with concentration on, fucking waste of like 10mins on the prep screen And the worst part would be when the KO swordskill would hit.... and proc, and game over.

Once I got that part of the fight, next was trying to figure out how to deal with Belias. The strat I was using before this fight clearly wasn't going to work (1 sub dancer, 1 sub bard, 1-2 mimes, fucking fun as hell lol) so I started messing around. The counter geomancer ability pretty much one shots most my characters, so I went with a magic reducing strategy, having two characters with knight subbed and slowly crippling him while staying alive.

One fight, I was doing pretty well, until he decided to just go "lol fuck this" and just petrify everyone with a 100% hit rate petrify move. Seriously, whose fucking bright idea was it to give this already difficult boss a petrify ability? ARGH. Look through my gear, and the only equip I had to nullfiy stop was the barette that I stole from Alma. Gave it to my white mage, as I figured I'd use her as my esuna bitch to keep my party not petrified. The fact that 95% of the map has the geomancy ability that can petrify REALLY DOESNT FUCKING HELP. :/ Ugh.

After a billion resets, after a billion "shit I forgot to equip x ability or y equipment or learn z skill" I finally got a good game. Got my PA up to 40ish before killing Wiegraf, and quickly dispatched the demons. Started working down Belias' magic, no unlucky stone counters, everything's going well, damage from counter is down to 80ish, so I start poking him with Ramza's dragoon doing about 600ish per hit (+100 when holy procs), and once magic is low enough I start breaking his PA, just to make sure he wouldn't fuck me up. Then he petrifies my chemist/knight Agrias, for some reason I think maybe he's close to death, and I poke him with my monk/knight, counters and stones her. Esuna my Monk, since she can use the monk ability to cure petrify off Agrias.... except, I FUCKING FORGOT TO LEARN PURIFICATION THIS PREP ROUND. I'm thinking, FUCK, ok, I can still do this, just take it slowly...

After a while, both ramza and my monk are petrified, and I'm basically on a loop of having my whm esuna ramza, and belias re-petrifies ramza before he even gets a turn. I decide to switch my ninja/brd in the corner from mp song to the CT100 song since my mp switching agrias and monk are petrified anyway, as an attempt to get people unpetrified and up. I had counter magic on my whm, so belias would summon titan or some shit, do pitiful damage, and my whm would waste mp countering for like 200ish damage. My ninja eventually gets petrified, and it's just belias vs whm who is almost out of MP.

And of course... she had a healing staff equipped, so I was like, well, shit, I got this far, but I think I'm dead... I end up using the last bit of my MP esunaing Ramza one last time, he gets a turn, and I think, ok, I've done like over 5000, probably 7000 damage by now, fuck whoever thought belias should have this much hp. Last move. He pokes Belias, and the game pauses as he starts crying about how he died. I immediately start goign OH MY GOD I FUCKIGN DID IT OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OH MY GOD :DDDDDD

So happy right now. Sorry for the livejournal blog, but I just felt like sharing it. I fucking love this insane difficulty patch. It's a fucking bitch most of the times, but when you finally win a tough battle by employing an actual strategy (although there was some luck involved, it's not like I was rerolling until I got a lucky roll) it just feels so good and rewarding.

    /blog off

edit: holy crap I wrote a fucking book

I'm enjoying a lot about it, the gameplay's fun, the battles are quick and engaging and the characters so far aren't fucking morons that circle around very obvious solutions to what they're dealing with. Shit happens and they deal with it / Griek punches said shit. The only downside is the never-ending spell of game freezes you can apparently run into.

speaking of awesome game music, also started playing Nier. Grabbed that soundtrack after all of an hour with the game.
