SO4 is fun, definitely not as good as 3 but still worth playing as a game. Ignore the story and you'll be golden.

Currently on a resource management gaming binge, because I love losing repeatedly.

I never knew I could feel for sprites until a bunch of Mantismen beam aboard my vessel and rip my crew to shreds. Or an away mission ends with all my crew killed my mutant spores.
Also: While I'm on the subject of resource management games. Are there any good Harvest Moon type games on Steam? I can't find any that are actually complete. *lights the signal*
Anyone have a tier list for the Ys series? I played through Seven, loved it but some of the older entries seem quite different from it. Am I stuck only moving forward to Memories of Celceta?
Ys Oath in Felghana is fucking amazing. That's the only other one I've thoroughly played.
Oath in Felghana and Origins are both good (along with 7 and Celceta. I wouldn't really go past that, but the gameplay is somewhat different in Oath and Origins than 7. More solo play/platforming than battle stuffs but definitely a lot LOT harder on Nightmare.
Man, I had forgotten what a bitch FFV can be if you're not using the right jobs. I've played the game so many times that I decided to just roll with whatever sprites I liked the best... I'm actually having to grind. In a FF game! Crazy.
Case and point to what? No one is saying you should play SO4 because of the awesome story or characters. It's a fun game with a good battle system. If you're playing action RPGs for story then I hope you like terrible stories.
2 is my favourite solely because of nostalgia and the sheer amount of times I played it, but 3 has a much better battle system once you learn the ins and outs and is challenging as well as rewarding (and not impossible). Gameplay wise 3 is the best while 1 and 2 have a good mix of story and gameplay. 3 has the best buildup to a climax most RPGs with a story that isn't terrible and characters who aren't awful but cliches all the same. 3 shits itself at the end for most people but even with that I'd still play the shit out of 3 again.
SO4 didn't bother me much, apart from some of the main characters and the lack of different endings like in previous iterations. But really though, it's all about that item creation! That, and Mr. Sakuraba's music.
I think I've mentioned this on here before, but the big plot twist in 3 agitated me so much I just pulled out the disk and drove to my local game store to sell it.
I've had the story explained to me after the fact, but much like how Jurassic Bark got "fixed" in one of the Futurama movies the damage is already done.
I always loved SO3. SO4 was so fucking hard to play through though because of that girl.
Sounds like you just want to dislike it, but I guess that's your prerogative. Sad, 'cause I thought it was a neat twist once I finished the game.
But I guess the reception to that twist is probably a lot of why we get the same stuff over and over in games. If they try something different... this is the result.
No yeah I mean, it's totally worth it to sit through the hours and hours of cutscenes and dialogue that are awful by any games standard for an OK battle system that's inferior to all it's predecessors. I wish I lived in this ideal world of yours where I could completely ignore the bad aspects of everything, but here in the real world, the game is bad because certain parts of it are so overwhelmingly bad that the good things don't even get a chance to shine.
It'd be like me offering you a blowjob after I repeatedly kick you in the balls. It kind of takes the fucking magic away. Unless that's your fetish, but then if it is, just say so and stop trying to pass it off like that's normal.
I agree. When I was younger I could play games like that, but now I need a good story with my gameplay (or very little story at all; that works too)
It's not even that. Dude is trying to say ignore the story in a fucking Star Ocean game. The series that is rivaled only by Xenosaga and MGS4 for longest fucking cutscenes ever.
