I liked the characters and felt they had a bit more depth than the usual crew. They're not Rutee-level amazing, but still a cut above some of the cliched stereotypes that Tales loves to trot out so often. mostly I would say it's the childhood story arc that made me feel that way; something about getting to know them as kids and then seeing them as adults made them feel a lot less one-dimensional.
as for the battle system - hmm, why did I like it so much? I think a lot of it comes down to the way the designers rewarded and punished you for certain playstyles. in the past, if you dodged an attack it saved you from damage. in Graces, if you dodge an attack it boosts your CC. in the past, if you hit a weak point it did more damage. in Graces you're encouraged to aim for multiple weak points and switch up your attacks to stack the weakness debuff as much as possible (I think, I forget exactly how that part worked). the lack of an MP gauge meant I was always aiming for more CC to free-style maul the enemy, and you get more CC by playing technically. it just flowed very well for me.
granted I haven't played as many of the current-gen or the previous-gen Tales games... I was much more a fan back in the PSX days. Destiny II (NA) for lyfe motherfucker
