I picked up the original Torchlight since it went on sale for $3 on Steam. After already having 800+ hours in TL2, I'm 10 hour into the original and can confidently say it's better. I'll probably dump ~500 hours in before I take a break unless something else catches my immediate attention.

Yep. The only thing that made me enjoy t2 more than the first was multiplayer.

currently plodding through the pre sequel. not a bad game by any means, but nobody is online to play WITH, lol

I didn't even get to enjoy the multiplayer. After the first month, people would vote/kick me as soon as I joined. Half of them were duping and the other half didn't understand how to password lock their games. The only thing that really kept me around was Salan with how much content he brought to the game with Synergies. I might go back and play whenever he finishes his Paladin.

It was probably timing on my part too. I had literally just started getting back into PC games and Torchlight II was the first game I ever bought on steam. Didn't know anyone and the people I did meet were kind of flaky.
After maxing out my Engineer on vanilla, I stuck with modding and never looked back.
Speaking of which, it really sucked how Runic implemented the modding for multiplayer. Great in concept, but terrible in functionality.

I wanted to come back to this and say thanks for posting because it pushed me to play it again and I'm officially hooked. Yesterday I put in 5 hours (which I never play games for that long in one day) and had to almost force myself to go to bed. I still wish it was third person, but I've forgotten about that for the most part. The biggest difference maker for me was trying mouse & keyboard instead of using the controller. The former is a complete game changer. I now realize I need a wrist pad asap!

I'm on the fence leaning towards dislike. I abhor any game that forces time constraints on you.

Time constraint is like the basic idea behind the game, so it's surprising you're still on the fence ;p
