I love Vegas. I'd readily find any excuse to ditch work to go and hell I'd goad other people into doing the same. But trust me, if you are already broke, you aren't going to have any fun IMO. Vegas is not a cheap town. I've gone there with family and friends before. I gambled the whole time, they never touched as much as a slot yet spent more than me just on day one. Not to say it can't be pulled off on a tight budget, I just wouldn't recommend it, especially since I gather you are trying to go a little nuts.

If you had the cash (and the plane tickets as well...) I'd say go for it. Seeing as you don't (from what you posted), I'd try to store come cash away and really go all out in the near future.

I for one can give a rats ass if it's my bday or vday or anything, but fact of the matter is for many youngins buying booze is a big thing. I hate when people make something out to be more important than it actually is. Like vacations and coming of age. Oh wow, you just turned 21, you have to go do something right now at this very instant or you'll never be able to celebrate again! So what if I lose my job, I have to go now it is so important! And vacations. Yeah, vacations are so awesome, I'd love to pay thousands of dollars to do the exact same shit I can do at home. Oh my God, let's go walk around and see the sights they are so special! And Vegas of all places, not only are you wasting money getting there and staying there, you'll be throwing away money trying to make money, which you won't succeed at.

My mom just got back from a weekend in Vegas.

Sure, the experience is cool, and vacations are always nice, but if you are going to lose your job over it then it is totally not worth it. Keep the job, save your pennies, and when you can afford to take the vacation/won't get in trouble for the time off, then decide if you want to go.

Don't make a habit out of it, but sometimes you need to think less about the big picture and more about the moment. I've been married to my job for 4 years now - started literally 2 weeks out of college and been here ever since. I hate it, but I make a good amount of money, have a great resume, and a solid future.

Is that worth happiness? I'm still working on the answer.

[Edit]: Vegas is gross. I've been there 5 times now (mostly for business) and the grime gets thicker every time I visit. If you wanna celebrate turning 21 though, its a solid plan. I did that back in 2003 with a few friends and my twin sister. Was an awesome experience and I wouldn't trade it for any job I've ever had.

My soon-to-be brother in law had an all expense paid trip to Hawaii for a week to do whatever the hell he wanted to do. His wife's dad paid for everything. Only downside was that he had no vacation time left at his job and when he asked permission to be off that week, they told him "Sure, but you won't have a job when you come back..." He went anyway and doesn't regret it for a second. He was probably 21 or 22 at the time. When he came back in from Hawaii, he enrolled in classes for coal mining (huge industry here), and makes almost 3 times the salary he made at the other job. I'm not saying you should do it, but it doesn't have to turn out badly.

Maybe you can have your cake and eat it too! Jump off the roof of your house and sprain your ankle or break an arm. Then take a MLOA (medical leave of absence) for a week and go to Vegas. This is assuming you have some job where use of your limbs is required and you cannot complete the tasks with said injury.

You just started the job, and want to go on vacation? I'm confused. I go on vacation when I've been working straight for a long ass time, I don't just do it randomly. Not to mention, the last time I went to vegas I think it cost us around 3-5grand and that is without much gambling. We have atlantic city here, gambling really isn't that great and tables at vegas are expensive. Hoover dam was nice though, I'd go there again.

Hey, I like Vegas as much as the next guy, but it's either to spend a weekend of debauchery (hotel sex, gambling, eating) with whoever I'm dating at the time, or to gamble/eat/see a show with friends and go to clubs to find someone to have lots of hotel sex with.

If you notice a pattern here, it's that all the things you do in Vegas (hotel/food/gambling/shows/clubs) cost money, and the kid is broke, and depending on his mom most of those things could be much less fun than they should be for it being his 21st birthday.

It just doesn't seem like an optimal Vegas trip, and compounded with the loss of a job if he goes...yeah. Bad call.

You could always see if your boss would front you the vacation time; many jobs allow a negative balance for concurrent vacation, you just can't request more once negative until you earn it back.
