His point was (and he spelled it out pretty well) was that if soldiers are NOT being harmed, just as they aren't in Japan, Germany, Vietnam(I think), then having a token force is perfectly understandable. By not believing we should, you need to believe we should entirely pull out of every country, and have no foreign military affairs ever (OMG LIBERTARIAN = DEMOCRAT LOL) or you're a hypocrite.

Except even in context, McCain's quote fucking sucks. Japan and Germany were not only completely obliterated militarily, but there was no resistance to occupying forces and no civil wars going on either. I think you've mistaken Vietnam for Korea, where we stayed in the part of Korea that wanted us there to ensure the North wouldn't invade- so again, no resistance, no civil war (considering N and S Korea became independently sovereign nations).

But in Iraq, we are occupying a country after militarily destroying it, but we have obvious resistance to that occupation, and infighting on top of that. It's clear that the region will be tumultuous for quite some time, unlike Japan and (West) Germany which welcomed our efforts and made incredibly fast recoveries, and liked us enough to fully support our continued Cold War military positioning/presence in their countries.

So in closing, McCain sucks for trying to compare an extended Iraq occupation to Japan and Germany.
