My point was rape, a lot of times, goes unreported. It can be before a prior, after a prior, in between court dates, whatever. Maybe the reason the numbers are so low (at least to a certain extent, maybe what could be some kind of "MoE" when compared to other crimes) for repeaters is because of the secretive nature of rape victims. Again, I could be completely off base with even assuming that rape goes unreported more than murder, arson, robbery, etc...but it just seems to pass the "obvious" test to me. Again, I should reiterate since you seem to be throwing numbers in my face, that I don't think that every sex offender should have their balls chopped off. Build it on a case-by-case basis. I can't sit here and tell you to lump every sex offender in the "chop his balls off" category, but having the option to do so for some absurd crimes is absolutely welcomed by me.

Basically. The Ohio study also shows that rehabilitation programs while incarcerated cut the recidivism rate by half. And if you check back to my last post, I edited in some federal statistics of overall rates, which shows that murder also is extremely low for repeat offenders.

Unsurprisingly enough, it's crimes that can be linked to poverty that have the highest recidivism rates. THE MORE YOU KNOW

I ('m trying to) understand your sentiments Tyche, but I don't really think case-by-case justice really works on a practical or ideological level- I think case-by-case is best reserved for the rehabilitation/incarceration phase, personally. And is it really worthy to have that lingering exception to taint our justice system? Where does our moral high ground go when we deal with certain theocratic governments? We like to talk a lot about the cruel punishments and restrictions in places like Iran or China or North Korea or Singapore, but when we start castrating and filling up death row... idk bro, just seems like we'd be falling pretty low.

yeah lol. this topic has proved pretty informative for me though, a new word for my vocabulary (I'll be honest, I had never heard recidivism before and had to see it in context to get it) and more ammo against libertarian economic policy/for closing class divides.

We already do a case-by-case judgment. Federal Sentencing Guidelines are shattered on a daily basis.

Don't sentences fall within some range, i.e. 5-10 years and whatnot? That also factors into the rehabilitation area, I guess. But I'm not going to get into an argument in favor of our justice system being perfect; rather I've been stating my position that we shouldn't fuck it up any worse with cruel and unneeded forms of punishment.
