Being a maths geek.

Knowing the actual math behind the game is nice, it helps for optimizing gear sets and whatnot, but I don't think that's required so long as you understand the basic concepts and ballpark areas of what Accuracy/Attack/INT/Whatever you need for certain fights. Also knowing general strategical things is big to me, i.e. when something bad happens and a tank goes down, knowing when it's time to kite, time to go easy and not make hate go all over, and time to zerg it down before it can do more damage.

bull, I leveled my RDM to 75 when the game was released. Keeping gear for a job I hate because I didn't know it would be boring as shit at end game 5 years ago is moronic. Likewise on my PLD- I loved playing it in exp and BCNMs, did not care for it at all in endgame events.

Granted, someone leveling BRD, RDM, or BLM in this day and age knows what they're getting themselves into and it's why I won't touch any of them

Being an advanced player IMO includes putting yourself out for others because it is after all an MMO. I don't really enjoy RDM most of the time and I was gonna level a 4th melee but, to be fair on other people who have mages and melees levelled, I did it so we can share mage whoring. There's nothing worse in FFXI than that asshole BRD BLM RDM 75 who will only play SAM to every single event when you have to constantly be RDM as it is in one of my Linkshells, but the others are fine. Imagine if everyone had that attitude, shit wouldn't work.

The two things that make a good player to me are being able to understand any job at end-game and being able to understand the concept of different events without repeated instruction.

Outside of these two things everything else is bonus.

- has multiple well-defined gearsets for each job, and the proper situation to use each set
- participates regularly in at least two scheduled group events
- has the presence of mind to constructively criticize and expertly advise others on their team or in their party on aspects of the game, whether it be playing a certain job, fighting a certain HNM, or leading a group event in some capacity. This goes WELL beyond SE's definition of a mentor.

Bonus points if they have a crafting job available at 90+ with sub-crafts maxed.

BTW Calli, trust me you're not the only veteran RDM without the hat.. TAL is like 2-for-history on that drop heh..
