Yup. Shi = death or archaic form of four. Four (shi/yon) and seven (shichi/nana) are considered unlucky numbers. 44 (shi-jyuu-shi/yon-jyuu-yon) is even unluckier.

In Chinese culture the #4 is considered very taboo. (Similar to the anglo fear of the #13). Reason is when said aloud, 4 sounds very similar to die/death. Repetition of the sound makes it stronger and therefore more unlucky.

This is the exact shit I was talking about. What doesn't add up? How many fucking people were supposed to win 100m? I think ~2 rank 1 winners per server sounds completely reasonable. And considering we're less than a day into the numbers being revealed, if you're just skeptical that you haven't seen enough rank 1 winners, maybe it's like the real lottery where they wanna wait a few days before everyone on the server starts spamming them for handouts.

I'm not going to write it again or bother with copypasta, but yea, it's the same for Japanese. A lot of Japanese concepts are derived from Chinese culture, including kanji (pictographic concepts). The key difference is that japanese came up with new pronunciations for the same characters.
