Re: Quantum of Solace - Bond 22

I loved that Casino Royale took the series back to a much more serious note, because while Die Another Day started out fairly strong, it quickly devolved into cartoon territory. With the exception of GoldenEye, which I thought was quite good all around, the Brosnan films took the series into unbelievable CGI territory. Cool movies? Yeah. Cartoon action? Yeah. Don't get me wrong, I thought as an actor Pierce Brosnan -was- James Bond, but the direction of the series just got less and less believable. Its the same reason that I prefer old Sean Connery movies to the Roger Moore ones, because I always thought Connery was smooth with the one liners, while Moore always came across to me like a goofball who I couldn't quite take seriously.

Everyones going to have an opinion on what type of formula makes a movie a Bond movie, but I like my James Bond for adults.

Re: Quantum of Solace - Bond 22

Er, what? Physical appearance aside, Daniel Craig's portrayal of Bond is far more in line with the way he was shown in the books. Sean Connery took his own spin on the idea, and since that point everyone who played Bond was basing themselves off Connery's portrayal, not the actual book version.
To be fair, Timothy Dalton met repeatedly with Ian Flemming in order to better the character(only bond actor to do so IIRC). He unfortunately played bond in an overall shitty era of action movie making. He still was worlds better than Pierce, who too many people have a hard on for. Hell, even George Lazenby was better than Pierce, but he got stuck in a Bond movie that tried to do something that people were unwilling to accept from the genre at the time (though it it had many similarities to the most recent Casino Royal, which people found a breath of fresh air to the franchise).

Re: Quantum of Solace - Bond 22

Pierce Brosnan gets favorable remarks wholly on the back of Goldeneye. if he hadn't made that as his first movie (making instead say, Die Another Day and it's ridiculous Ice cutter in the sky first) he'd probably get remembered less fondly as a 'good bond'.

personally, I think Brosnan did a good job with a bad hand because some of the films he was put into suffered from absurd writing. (lesson: hollywood sucks at making original bond flicks, they're like 1 for 4 now.) was he a great Ian Fleming bond? not really no. But at least he was comfortable in the role (which is more than can be said for a lot of other Bonds)

I am a Bond fanatic through and through. My favorites are Moore and Connery, Brosnan is good but it seems a bit too "fake" for me. I love Goldeneye though, mainly due to the N64 game <3. But the other ones just seemed cheesy. I love Craig, like someone else said before me, he brings the edge and seriousness back to the series.

    This trailer is awesome.

The point with Casino Royale (which was the very first Bond novel) was that the series from this point is going back to his origins, and it's showing his development to the smooth and calculated Agent we know today.

in all seriousness; bond was supposed to be ironic, brutal, and cold - at least based on the early novels by fleming. (I agree that he doesn't look that much like the visual description of bond from the novels but he nailed the personality the best of any bond so far honestly.)
Are win! The books are hands down my favorite book series ever and I think Craig executed his role as Bond (thus far) fantastically. Plus it helps that he is sex. I hope the next one will be as good!

How did he do that, with a spirit medium? Fleming died during the filming of Goldfinger in the 60s. You might be referring to the fact that Dalton was a HUGE Fleming fan and was obsessed with the books so he made his portrayal much darker and closer to literary Bond. Dalton was a great Bond but cursed by being in some of the worst movies in the series(Roger Moore gets my vote on both counts; worst Bond and worst movies though).

I think the reason hardcore fans liked Lazenby so much is because OHMSS was a great adaptation from the novel, not necessarily due to his acting ability which wasn't as great as other Bonds.

I'm pretty sure the only reason I like Brosnan as Bond is because Goldeneye was such an amazing flick. It just disappoints the shit out of me his other outings as Bond weren't nearly as good.

I hate to say it but after reading all of the Fleming novels it's really really hard to go back and watch the films now since the books are leaps and bounds better but since I'm such a huge Bond fan I still do, it's just interesting(and sometimes disappointing) the interpretation and direction they went with the series at some points(hi2u Moonraker).

I'm pissed he didn't come back for Quantum of Solace like was originally rumored. :/

On the subject of Timothy Dalton, The Living Daylights is an excellent Bond film. I didn't overly like License to Kill though.

And also, I know I'm not the only one who's like this, but I cannot watch Goldeneye anymore. So many people played the game SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much that it killed the movie for myself and some of my friends. I'm trying to enjoy the movie, but I just keep thinking that Bond should watch out because someone is waiting around the corner for him with an RPG.

I'm thinking of the quote "Find Bond!" in the trailer to be specific. You really can't help the comparison.

All the Bonds up till Licence to Kill were released randomly, usually in the summer though.

Slight necro bump but went to see Quantum of Solace last night and it did exactly what it says on the tin. I love Craig's portrayal of Bond even more than after Casino Royale. I've read most of the original Fleming books and seen all the Bond movies, he's easily closest to the true Bond, sod the hair colour. With Casino Royale I found it hard to pull myself away from the old and trusted Sean Connery mould of James Bond of the cinema but this really sealed the deal for me. Craig is stunning all the way through. Awesome film, very good action flick overall as well if you're not a Bond-fan otherwise.

    Spoiler: show
I found it kinda cool when Fields was killed they posed her like the Masterson girl in Goldfinger. Brief moment of retro homage in otherwise very modern movie.

The only thing I haven't liked about recent Bonds since Goldeneye and Sean Bean is that they just can't get really really good EEEVIIILL actors for baddies. The French guy they got for Greene in Quantum of Solace is decent at best... and at least squeals like a girl at the end when Bond's pulling him up by his Lawrence Llewelyn-Bowen-ish hair. The sub-plot between the Bond girl and family-burning rapist dictator guy was far more interesting, when it came to end fight I wanted to see her kick the dictator's ass more than I cared about Bond beating up Greene.
