    The pure deliciousness.

I was going to cook a pizza tonight, but now I think I'm going to go out and order a nice mid rare steak with some shrimp, mashed potatoes with bacon bits and cheese, some chicken soup, and as many other meat products I can stuff in my mouth. And I'm going to do it because of your post. Your post has killed at least 3 animals (plus probably 4 shrimp).

Man evolved from being herbivores to omnivores. Those of us that continue to eat meat are therefore more advanced than those that choose to wallow in their primitive lettuce-munching ways.

That's wrong, because it assumes, with no basis, that all other species were somehow just put here for our use. That's a form of prejudice - speciesism - by analogy with racism and sexism.

It wasn't long ago that whites thought blacks were put here for their use, and men thought women were put here for their use. We are all products of our time, and we have been taught to unthinkingly accept that all other species exist for our use.

What justifies speciesism more than racism or sexism?

    MEAT.ORG
    This is lulzy.

First of all, nothing was "put here." We evolved to the top of the food chain, so we can eat what we want. Why is it more acceptable for a Lion to tackle a sickly, old Gazelle and rip its throat out with its bare teeth, then proceed to feast on its bloody, reeking flesh right out in the open than it is for a human to stab a lobster in the head and boil it? That sir, is speciesism, by analogy with racism and sexism. We need to protest the Lions eating those poor, sickly, old gazelles with bad legs who fall behind the pack. Those horrible beasts! The things they do to them are absolutely horrific, what a wanton display of gore. Their culture of sick torture, stalking in the shadows, waiting for some innocent animal to fall behind in the pack and then ripping them apart has gone on long enough. Disgusting! Those Gazelles deserve humane treatment.

    Goddamn PETAphiles.
That example is fucking sexy; I never even thought about that but it's so damn true. Although I bet their rebuttal would be something like "We are humans and should be more compassionate towards the feelings on animals..." etc.

Even before tools and weapons were invented, a guy could just catch a rabbit and break its neck and feast on it's raw bloody flesh... then die of whatever disease you get from eating improperly handled/uncooked rabbit meat.

To be honest, with all the strict health regulations on what temperature and for how long to cook meat at, how to properly clean and handle it, refrigeration and preservation, etc. I'm surprised humans were even able to eat meat prior to the 1800s.

I do admit though, people now a days eat way too much meat. You shouldn't even be eating meat more than once a day anyway, unless you're a weight lifter, that is.

It's funny, we are omnivores, but we should be eating mostly vegetables with a mix of other things, including meat. I don't really understand how or why we ended up consuming meat to the point it actually overshadows the vegetables we eat.

What percentage of a lion's meals include meat? A bear? A wolf? Is there such a thing as too much meat?

Overeating should be avoided, sure, but I don't know that limiting what portion of your meals are meat versus vegetable is natural. We should live like any other animal, only with clothes and tools and proper food handling.

I'm all for meat and all but . . . this is silly. Our digestive system and dietary needs are not the same as a bear or wolf or lion's. No comparison need be made. People do eat too much meat, but there's no reason to eliminate it entirely.

the only reason those regulations are there are to completely eliminate any possibility of getting a food born illness from food, you can eat a lot of meat raw and be perfectly fine, though there will be a chance you can catch a disease. I've eaten plenty of steaks midrare and never had a problem. as long as you eat it fresh, storage is where problems come about mostly, we keep our food in refrigeration for days up to a week, where as back in the day they would eat it right on the spot, or they developed primitive ways of preservation.

I'm just wondering what the actual basis is to say that meat should be secondary to our diet. How do you know that vegetables shouldn't be secondary, only to fill in the missing nutrients we don't get from a main diet of meat? In fact, that's exactly where we're at now, as a species and a society.

Well, take everything I say in this thread with a grain of salt, since I do have a habit of being facetious. But I am curious what basis there is on claims of how our diet "should" be.

Eating vegetables over meat was not pushed by the media as being healthy and preferred over meat because they thought it would be funny it is because it is true. The balance of your diet is based on what your body actually uses/gets nutritionally out of the food you eat and as omnivores our bodies need a lot of nutrition from vegetables and we need to consume more plant material than meat. The nutrition we get in meat is needed at smaller levels and we can survive on much much less meat that we actually eat. I am by no means a anti-meat person I eat meat when I want however as omnivores our diets should be skewed more towards vegetables.

Wolves, and lions are carnivorous and bears actually eat less meat than you would think and graze a lot on berries and honey and other plant matter.
And about the thing you said regarding the quality of meat before the 1800's if you are never exposed to something then you will get sick very easy from it but if you grow up eating raw/tainted meat (with the exception of parasites) you won't get sick from it after your body adjusts and knows how to handle it.

At a certain point society is shooting itself in the proverbial foot by being too obsessed with cleanliness and sterilizing everything.

I reckon also that modern medicine has kept people alive who'd have otherwise died of something else in their childhood, increasing the total number of people who're sensitive to impurities in the meat.

If your metabolism can handle it and you keep portion sizes sane I see nothing wrong with meat at every meal. Then again Americans know astonishingly little about their own metabolism or what a reasonable portion size is. Probably just easier to tell people 'stop eating so much meat!'

Still, <3 lobster. I just don't like taking the damn things out of their shell is all. So messy.

Oh yeah that is the thing about food you always have to match it to your activity level if you are more active you can actually utilize more meat however what you eat should be based on how much nutritional value your body pulls out of the food.

They base this off our physiology and on what our bodies need to function efficiently, and of course on both the positive and negative effects of our diets. Though meat (red meat, specifically) does provide us with protein to build muscle and some amino acids (not sure about this one), as well as fat for energy, it also does possess quite a lot of what is called "bad" fatty acids, and meat is heavily saturated with all of these, meaning that small amounts of it is usually enough.
At a certain point society is shooting itself in the proverbial foot by being too obsessed with cleanliness and sterilizing everything.
    Absolutely agree.
