So if it's an exact port...then what are those videos making it look completely redone? Sorry....tl;dr'd it
I understand what they're putting into the game. I'm saying the 'trailer' reeks of "We locked an intern in a room with a scanner, the SNES game's manual and a laptop with Adobe AfterEffects for a week.'
It might as well have been the trailer for the SNES game. I expect more after all the 'countdown' buildup is all.
SNES straight ports to the GBA are one thing, but I have to admit that a straight port to the DS has me a little ticked off (no, extra dungeons and touch-screen menus don't count).
I guess it's still not apperant that CT was Square's bastard child; EGM had a Square interview with JP and NA devs after the NA release, and Square basiclly said they didnt expect it to sell well, and it was just a quick game they tossed together. Yeah, I cant source it, so take it for what you will. Probably the only reason theyre rerereleasing in on the DS is because people were crying for it.
I never really saw it as a great game, as far as I recall Lufia II overshadowed it, and it wasnt till later that it became a cult game.
Regarding the straight port... If someone has never played, this is your chance. Now that the cat is out of the bag, it's hilarious to read some of the previous posts <_<
I want some Secret of Mana loving...I never played any of the games that came "after" it, because I heard nothing but mediocore opinions of them...now any real SoM sequel, or shit, even a port would force me to get a DS
But what more is there? I mean they already clearly said what the game was. Anything more in the trailer wouldn't have been representative of what the game is. I'm kind of annoyed that they're doing a straight up port and not working on something new, too, but the trailer did exactly what was said to be happening.
It just feels like a lazy, sloppy release. So much more effort was put into the Final Fantasy DS releases that a straight, GBA port effort is a disappointment. The trailer does nothing but push the nostalgia button.
If Chrono Trigger DS costs 40 bucks I'm just not going to bother.
Frankly, the DS probably doesn't have the power to make something more visually pleasing than Chrono Trigger in 3d (FF6 as well.) I think CT as a sprite game still looks fantastic.
Also, if they did a remake, I wouldn't want it to be faithful. I would want it to be a reimagining... yeah they don't really do that in gaming but I think it would be great to try.
They may not have reinvented the sprites, but I'm almost positive after looking at the trailer that they've got an enhanced color palette, which definitely improves things in and of itself.
Even though it hasn't been officially stated, I expect they'll do a re-translataion like they did with the GBA FF remakes. That should be cool at least.
The Chrono Trigger DS version picks up after Chrono's mom runs into the portal while chasing the cats.
Personally I'm happier to see a straight port with maybe some useful touchscreen stuff, than a DS 3D remake. I wasn't a fan of FF3's blocky DS graphics, and CT looked amazing for a SNES game. I really don't think that DS level graphics would do it justice, or look nearly as good as the original. Still, the sort of thing they did with FF1/2 on PSP would be nice maybe. Personally I just hope that one day they release CT and FF6 on a next gen system. Also, I'm a bit confused why they waited for the DS to release a straight port rather than just doing it on the GBA.
A handheld release is welcome, or any release period in Europe. But still, I'm not sure that I'll pay £30 for it when I can just play the ROM on my PSP.
had to merge these two topics. Was irritating the heck out of me while no mod status.

So I was looking up the Japanese/English translation differences and, strangely, I actually prefer the English one overall. A lot of the JP stuff has stupid names where I think it doesn't fit and one place they censored I think actually IMPROVED the dialogue, changing the Demons into Mystics makes the whole thing interaction more interesting and less "oh hey, demon killing time." Of course, some of the things cut for space are worse and the censoring of a few things and removal of a few details suck (apparently the Reptites had a more detailed background), but rocker names >>>>> condiments and having a distinctive, neutral on the good/evil spectrum, and somewhat generic name "Magus" really is better than "Demon King". Having the sages named after the three wise men is cooler than "Gassh, Bosch, Hassh". Masamune > Grandleon. Geno Dome > Genocide Dome, the element of surprise when walking in was cool. Having the Dream weapons named Dreamstone weapons would have pissed me off, since you go through so much to get a Dreamstone and the weapons are so plentiful. Not using the FF -ga terminology helps set it apart, even though with the NES and SNES translations they used numbers in FFs too, it is better nowadays.
I really hope that if they retranslate, it is minimally changed.
Not surprised. Square will usually port a game 2~3 times before they finally remake it. I hope it will at least have the cut scenes from the PSX port.
