Unless im not seeing an extra button somewhere I cleared all my firefox settings, and I just installed opera.

Firefox will load system defaults by removing your profile folder; but if you just installed Opera and that's not working either, I doubt it'd help so I won't pursue it...

Check your settings in IE under Tools-Options-Connections-LAN Settings, is there anything there about a proxy server?

I doubt this will work, but for shits and giggles, go to your command prompt and ping google; then put the resulting IP into firefox/opera bar.

this is going to sound incredibly retarded ryko but have you rebooted? also check task manager, do you have firefox.exe (or opera i guess) still running even if it's "closed"? this happened to me last week when ff3 was just released and i upgraded. no links would work (or sites loaded) because ff had ghost profiles still running and using resources, which a reboot would then take care of. i ended up completely uninstalling it and reinstalling 3 from scratch and it's been fine since, but it was the same exact problem you're describing. since you say both ff & opera though, i'm doubting this is what's going on for you, but i guess it's worth a shot.

Yeah I restarted well before I bothered downloading opera in the first place, and have since uninstalled and reinstalled both with no imported settings. Still nothing.

delete Windows Firewall's Firefox rule & let it rediscover FF/Opera (if you have WinFW turned on)

Unless he typed "ping google" instead of "ping google.com" or "ping www.google.com"

There's also different types of failing, there's dns failure, unable to ping and packet loss. Which one is occurring would help shed light on what's going on.

Yeah, I should have mentioned screenshotting your ping attempt; if you wouldn't mind doing that again (and making sure you're typing 'ping google.com'), it would help us narrow down some of the issues considering that it did indeed fail the first time.

Yep, with IE working ICS was my best guess, so that makes sense. Do you use ICS for some reason? A broadband router should be able to do everything windows ICS can do, without bogging down the CPU on your PC or causing issues like this.

You can't use the free ZoneAlarm with ICS, so if you really need ICS to remain on then you'll have to either buy or remove ZA and use the Windows Firewall unless you get a router so you can turn the ICS off.
