To catch a predator, canine style.

So I am debating a method for catching a dog theif, though my tactics are a bit overboard, so I decided to ask BG (the wealth of knowledge >.>).

Backstory:

Dog goes missing from back yard saturday morning (or late friday night). No holes under fence, and gate is firmly shut.

Saturday afternoon we go to a neighborhood social (just moved into new neighborhood, meeting the neighbors..)
During the social two of our neighbors that live behind us greet us with "oh your the one with the dog that barks". One female stated that she had been woken up by it a few times (we are sensitive to that and dont want to piss off our neighbors with loud dogs, so we were suprised as we hadnt heard anything), but stated that she didnt mind it, however there was hesitation in her voice, as if she regretted saying anything about it. We apologized and thought about getting a silencer for the dog... had it not run away >.>. The basic problem is that apparently 2-3 of our neighbors had been annoyed by our dog (perhaps a couple of the housewives were more annoyed, as they are home listening to the dog all day).

Anyways, so sunday night around 8pm we hear the dog back in the backyard... still no holes, gate tightly shut.

Which neighbor do I kill and how do I find out which one did it, w/o kidnapping/interogating their children(my first thought).

Had someone knocked on my door and asked nicely to keep an eye on my loud dog, I would have gladly taken care of it. Walk into my backyard and steal my dog as a message and that means war.

set up a secret recorder in suspects house. start barking late at night. recover tapes and see which one says "didnt we kill that fucking dog?!"

Well, see if all three do not have pets of there own because they are the ones that probably did not steal it. There use to dog/pet antics such as barking. There dog people. If the 2-3 neighbors all hate pets, next step is load up the ole shotgun on those assholes.

I'd say the first step is to try to move away from a neighborhood of crazy dog stealing motherfuckers. Failing that get motion sensitive CCTV in the back garden / wherever you keep the dog and scan the tape if it goes missing again. Failing that just burn down all their houses.

No no, my dog WAS returned 1 day later. Fence tightly closed and no holes in the ground, which means someone took her, then brought her back. Not sure if it was actual dog theives who decided "no this isnt a pure bred", or pissed off neighbors. Either way, heads are gonna roll.

Just completely and indiscriminately raze the entire neighborhood and through the process of dragnet destruction you will catch said dognapper. Needless to say, once your rampage finally comes to a halt, heaven help the poor bastard that ever fucks with your dog again.

Edit: OH FUCK THAT! Judging by the pictures I would say we up the ante and raze a 5 mile radius around your home. Nothing sends a message like leaving a indiscriminate trail of heartbreak and tears.

I say buy a cheap webcam and point it at your backyard to take pictures of your dog while it's out there.
Animals have a way of getting in and out of things that there should be no way of them being able to do so. You might be able to capture how it's getting in and out. Or if nothing else, catch the thief it he/she returns.

A really large, bright sensor light. Kicks on when there's excessive movement. I don't think a dog would set it off. It may though.

Go to a local hardware store like Home Depot and purchase a few signs, stating "No trespassing - Beware Of Dog etc...."

Then set up maybe a sensor activated light, to catch someone entering your backyard. Once someone enters your yard, you can call the cops or even detain the person yourself for arrest >.>

It sounds weird....but if dont have a sign up, and someone enters your backyard then theres jack shit a cop can do. If you have a sign clearly posted, then they can be arrested on the spot.

Just know that, you get them arrested once and they will be extremely pissed when they get out. So they will go after your dog again, and the 2nd time around it becomes a felony! (granted the Police and a judge give a verbal no trespassing to the suspect)

Ya the dog hates being cooped up, so we try and let it play outside as much as possible. I have 2 dogs, (both females who decided they hate each other, so I cant let them near each other anymore), so one sleeps outside and one sleeps inside alternating.

I am probably going to buy some motion sensor cameras, but I dont think they will do it again if it was an attempt to send a message, unless I can find a way to antagonize whatever caused the incident again (i.e. get the dog to bark non stop for a while or something with the camera on). The problem is, I dont want to harrass the non guilty neighbors with alot of noise, so I need to find a way to fish out the crook w/o making myself the neighborhood asshole. Not to mention my property value might go down if the 4 houses around me suddently and mysteriously burn down.
