My LS encountered this issue not too long ago. Our resolution was that lotting rights are attributed to the player, not the character. A member who has two jobs leveled to 75 on two seperate characters is considered the same as a member who has both jobs leveled on the same character. However, before level 75 jobs on additional characters are even considered, the officers must vote unanimously that the member in question did in fact level the character. i.e. it wasn't given to them or purchased.

People who double box at events are not given any extra credit. Credit is based on the member being there, regardless of the number of characters he is playing.

This is actually fairly common for us, but in most instances we were all well aware of the leveling process on the additional characters so there was little room for doubt.

Secondary characters can sometimes be treated as secondary jobs, but I mostly see them only getting the "leftovers," which is perfectly okay to me. I have two secondaries, both of which I very rarely lot anything at all on, even if it's freelot.

People who play friends' accounts to lot - f that. Seriously. If you can't be there to lot yourself, you can't be there to lot, period. I've thankfully never lost an item like that myself, but I know a couple of people who have, and man oh man would I be pissed if I ever did.

Shits situational. Being someone who dual or tri-boxes, it really depends. One of my dual boxed characters is my main and what I'll attend 99% of the time to. The other is a friends account who I've held onto and paid for this past year and because their credit card got canceled and weren't gonna get a new one for a while. They ended up not coming back to the game and they gave me full permission to use it as I please (as long as I don't sell it or trade it). My third character is a family members and due to their work schedule aren't able to attend many events and normally play a little bit each week if at all.

When it comes down to points, it's dependent on if we need the bodies or not. If we do, EC is given to my main for dual/tri boxing, if not I probably won't be dual boxing anyways. But any extra characters will be regarded as nothing, no points, no lotting rights (except free lot/rot). Though secondary character are also treated as additional jobs; though in a way that the main will still be receiving points. So lets say my main has PLD NIN WAR leveled one mule is a TH3 THF and the other has RDM BRD WHM THF (TH4 lol) and we need a RDM or BRD, I'll come as that mule only no DBing. Unless I'm in lotting position on my main then I just kinda let them sit in the zone until it drops and concentrate on whatever job I'm needed.

Though as with my bro's character I sometimes play him during dynamis, though normally I jump on midway through cause he has to go to sleep for work or something, but I guess this counts as the someone else playing to lot during an event. For the most part people don't give a shit if he's played for half of the event or more and I just jump on to finish the night off and still let me lot for him. Other times I'll play him mainly to get him a piece of gear because he doesn't have the time or is unable to play that night. Though rare, it seems most people don't care and they shouldn't. Though I have never had the need to lot on both a main and a mule through the course of one event, and even if the position where to happen I believe that if your LS has a 1 item/run rule it should be applied to the player not the character.

For events in which I, or my bro can't show up but are in lotting position, I don't think it should matter who plays who since generally one of us is either main support or main tank or TH whore we're being useful to the LS to get the event over and done with. So as long as we don't completely suck balls at the job (normally doesn't happen anymore) and most people couldn't even really start to tell that someone else was playing it shouldn't matter. Hey RL can cause unwanted inconveniences, if your able to get around that through good friends or family why not?

For the whole player A playing player B's character for an extended period of time, it should be up to the shell leader and sacks to decide as well as the parties involved in the control of the character.

If someone was RPing as someone else for whatever reason but is found out, you should think about the overall effect of the character changing hands really had on your LS. If there were almost no negative effects to someone else playing the character and they still showed up to events, participated, and were being a useful member why kick them? If it was another LS mate or a family member to the characters original owner or a good friend of theres and they are still in communication to the real owner I really don't see a whole lot of problems with just treating it as the same character you once knew and played with. If the character was stolen or sold though then kicking them is probably a good solution.

To each their own though. With the way this games population is declining and with the way its getting harder to find competent people to play I'd rather have 6 or 7 people play 12-18 characters and getting gear for the characters that need it to help increase the margin of error. If a mule or secondary character getting a piece of gear will help the LS overall performance or if the character has been a long time helping member of the LS why not just reward it to make it a better more useful character?

It escapes me how some people don't find such a simple and elegant solution exactly that. Even within a strict points system it can still begin by the leaders evaluating an individual and the jobs they play at events regardless of which character. Leaders can even set guidelines which a secondary character, whether it is on a separate account or not, must meet for lotting requirements; this way for example if a person is admitted to an LS and they have a second character which does not meet the minimum application requirements they may play that character at events but not be allowed to lot on it.

This is slightly related, but not what the OP is asking about.

How would you treat the following situation: Someone has two seperate accounts, owns them both, one is a melee, the other is a mage. Should the person be allowed to gear for both accounts, assuming they deserve the item.

Or another way of looking at it, If the person is deserving enough to get the item, does it really matter which one of their chars they lot it on?

In my LS if someone owns 2 characters (whether on same account or not) if both have 75 job(s) and are being used equally at LS events, then they earn points/attendance regardless of which character they are playing. If someone is playing 2 characters at an event they don't get double for playing more than one character. You can lot something for a mule/alternate character (that does not get equal playtime) if it's free lot.

Also, because we have a bid system you basically have to be there to bid and lot. So we don't really have situations where someone is being logged in by someone else to lot (since they would need to bid and we don't allow someone to bid for someone else). Of course odd situations will always occur so those just get handled on a case by case basis.

If you make a person come on a 2ndary character more then there main character then by all means they should be allowed the right to lot gear. I mean you are wanting this char's jobs so why shouldn't you help gear it? If however it is a job they lvl'n for fun then only after main jobs get the item.

I got a friend in my LS that box's 5 characters (or more) at once.. he goes to HNM camps etc with it.. claims does fights etc.

What we did was... the points for camps etc he does, each "character" gets points... so he can lot wih the "DKP of that character"

no one ever really complained about it.

I think if your on hades server you may of heard of him its called "Team Ethan"

I am the leader of an point based linkshell on Asura, and I dual box pretty much 100% of the time. With the right job combinations/ event requirements I can pretty much dual box as good as 2 RL people would play 1 char each. But IMO it's all about time put into the shell. So if your 1 person playing 2 characters, your still spending the same amount of time as 1 person playing 1 character. Sure you bring more to the table at times but I still spend the same amount of time at an event as another member who does not dual box. I wouldn't consider either one of my characters a main or a mule. They are both my "main".

~Do you give dual boxed people points? No
~Do you treat them as though they're there? Unsure what your asking~ Yeah when I say something on 1 of my toons it is responded to. :3
~What about players who share accounts, not playing their own account but their friend's so friend can get an item if it drops? It has been allowed in the past in my linkshell, the points spent on the item come out of the person being dual boxed, even tho they are not present. But this only took place once on an item not really wanted by most members.(lolSipar) I haven't really given this situation much thought until now, but is perhaps a rule I should add to my LS.
~What if someone is dual boxed and they're up for a drop? Do they get it? Imo, no.
~If John takes a few months break but Jim plays his character, who gets the points? Jim
~What are the consequences if someone has been "RPing" as the person who owns the account, but isn't the original player and is discovered? If they were trying to attain points in a shady way such as pretending to be a friend, their membership to your linkshell should be put into question, b/c I mean they shouldn't be trying to fool their own LS-mates.

Primary accounts sounds like primary job... as long as they bring the accounts/jobs required shouldn't the additional versatility they offer count for something?

We did this all the time for people. Our LS was really really close though. Very unified. If someone was out of town/working/whatever and has been dedicated and deserved something like e.body/dalm/whateve, we'd have someone log on their toon while they were gone in case it dropped. My favorite one of those we ever did was during salvage. Haggen (best BLM ever ever ever) was right in the middle of a salvage run and had to leave. We had another member log on him and low-and-behold, drop 35 morrigan body. We set his HP in the Aspi outpost, and put a 37 level job in the middle of that area wearing the body. He shat a brick when he logged on. We done that quite a bit, and the reactions are always awesome.

Kinda pissed me off when I was in an ls where a few people got whatever they wanted because they were "always there" when the reality was that they were there maybe half the time and dual boxed the rest of the time (and when they were there usually someone else ran them there and they logged on at the last minute).

But what can you do, it all comes down to trust and caring about who you play with more than what you get out of it.

    1 no
2 uh yes? I'm assuming you mean attendance of the 'real' character holder though, so no
3 this needs to be public, usually in the case of annoying stuff like bb items or random af2 that no one else really wants
4 if there's competition and someone else is actually putting in the time to play their own account, then no, if rot, sure
5 if one person plays that character as their 'main' and chooses to have whatever points they would otherwise earn go the account being played, so be it
6 depends. if they were accruing points simulatneously on 2 characters, that's shady and pearlsmash-worthy

as for 2nd characters though, the rules are totally different, should be rot only in all circumstances, unless someone chooses to use their own points to lot something for their 2nd character that they will never lot on their main I GUESSSS....

something about duelist chapeau's on ALT's bothers me though -- oh and recently our LS leader lotted dalm over a longtime RDM-main; RDM is a dink but still, shady

yeah a buddy of mine used to afk/go to work/sleep/bang gf in attohwa on his main "getting ToD" or w/e, racked up huge points and scored some gaiters with little to no work involved

Here is a specific case. Going to fight JOL, sacs say on vent what if torque drops, friend of an ls thf dual boxes the thf to get him to sea, torque drops, and dual boxed thf gets the torque.

The thf is good friend/brown noser of sacs and is 50/50 on attendance....and I'm being generous with the attendance figure.

Same ls, have also had the Dynamis issue. Something drops, dual boxed character right outside the zone, they pop the person in, and bingo the drop goes to that person.

It just rubs me the wrong way when it comes to stuff like this. And in none of the above cases were things given out that I could have potentially got either. But I do have to watch good people get screwed out of stuff for some other person thats not even at the event to get. I just think its wrong and sends out a bad vibe to the other ls members that bust their ass to make events and are good members.

~Do you give dual boxed people points?

Points are only awarded to the person who is controlling the characters.

~Do you treat them as though they're there?

I do not excercise any special treatment while interacting with dual-boxed players. I usually just talk to the person who is controlling both characters like I normally would if they were only controlling one character.

~What about players who share accounts, not playing their own account but their friend's so friend can get an item if it drops?

We only allow an individual player to receive priority on an item once for any one of their characters. If they wanted to obtain the same item on both of their characters, they would either have to wait until nobody else wanted it or choose to reset their points and start from 0 again. Those rules only apply to a situation where both accounts are primarily maintained by the same person. If someone wanted to get one of their friends an item that they had the account access to, the answer would unquestionably be a no unless nobody else wanted it.

~What if someone is dual boxed and they're up for a drop? Do they get it?

If you're looking for a black and white answer, then no, but honestly I think in this situation it's best to play it by ear. If someone has been working hard towards an item and is scheduled to work on the day you're planning to fight the mob that drops it, then I find it acceptable for a friend to log their character on to lot if it drops. If it's someone who rarely shows up to events, on the other hand, then of course not.

~If John takes a few months break but Jim plays his character, who gets the points?

Jim. Earning points is a reflection of time spent by the individual and not the in-game character.

~What are the consequences if someone has been "RPing" as the person who owns the account, but isn't the original player and is discovered?

It depends on the intentions and severity of the case. If someone was ninja logging on their friend to accumulate points, I'd remove all extra points they had obtained this way and give them both a warning. If they repeated this after the warning, it would be grounds for immediate removal from the linkshell.

I think this is 2 questions that need to be separated better.

1: Do you give points to 2 different people when for whatever reason 1 person logs in and plays the other persons character at an event?

2: Do you give points to 2 different characters when played by the same person?

The answer in mind is the same for both; assign points to the player not the character.

In the case of #1, unless something happened to inconvenience the person who couldn't attend there's no reason he should get points for not being there but having a friend to log him on and zombie the whole time.

In the case of #2, assigning points to the character just means your risking drama when the player wants something but can't have it because they're always asked to come on the other character to events.

I've been dealing with this since 2006, I've always asked that LS's assign me points under ape/fyn so I don't get shafted if I'm asked to white mage for a month straight and want something for my MNK or PLD, or vice versa.

Points should go to people not characters. You don't get separate points depending on which job you play why should your toon be any different?
I'm of the opinion that if you have been ASKED to come to an event and 2-box because something we're low on people that it's more effort for you and so you should be rewarded with something like x1.5 points.
I'm actually in the process of making a new shell with some friends and we were discussing this recently. I hadn't considered the possibility of people covertly playing two toons at once for twice as many points... I guess I’m less suspicious than the rest of you.
I'd say that if such underhand tactics were discovered then the points of both players should be reduced by half.
