    $1400~ gaming PC

Current PC is ok but it slows down @ higher res and i feel its time for a new 1, if possible id like to run high/max settings w/o much lag while being able to multitask games like diablo2 ontop of ffxi. Looking to spend around $1400 excluding monitor. I have never built PC and wouldnt wanna just go buy parts to find out that they dont work well together or something similar to that, so thought asking here couldnt hurt you guys seem to know what you're doing a lot more than me ^^
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

don't drop the cash yet, wait for the 4870x2 card which is coming out in August. it's supposedly a new dual-GPU solution and doesn't suffer from microstuttering found in your current "SLI/Crossfire-on-a-card" AFR solutions

1400 will get you a sick PC, just wait for the 4870x2, MSRP is supposed to be ~$399-$449 USD, the rest of the PC will be pretty affordable allowing you to spend well under 1400, more like ~1000 or less.

Holy shit, that microstuttering BS flew around the net fast.

But yeah, wait for mid august.

Honestly, technology advances so fast, especially video cards, that you're better off waiting until you're ready to build before asking advice for anything. Opinions can radically change from us from month to month

the notion that it affects your gaming under all situations is a bit misleading, that's for sure

however, it's true that certain games will experience this stuttering effect when certain graphical scenarios are being used i.e. certain combinations of anti-aliasing at certain resolutions

the 4870x2 seems to have remedied this completely, however. i would feel bad not at least bringing the issue to light, as some people will experience it and will have to customize their settings around the issue

here's the anandtech preview of the 4870x2: http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3354&p=1

Why we should move onto a checkerboard render pattern in my opinion.

Of course, what graphics company is going to move away from AFR when it produces such high numbers?

The HD4870X2 is an interesting card, and should be extremely powerful. I currently use ONE HD4850 to run all my games (sans crysis the fat whore) max out at 1920x1200. I'm very happy with it since I basically sold my HD3870 for the cost of buying a HD4850 :D
