Sometimes, something so amazing, so coincidental, so serendipitous comes into your life, that it must be shared with others. This is one of those times. So, as many of you know, I'm a burgeoning wine-lover and in a weekly wine-tasting group called "The Young Winos of L.A."The three were arrested by Spanish police before being returned to the U.S. to face charges of transporting a minor across state lines for the purpose of engaging in sexual acts.
We have many new members rotating through our weekly tastings, and I get to meet some interesting people.
So on this evening of wine tasting, I arrived late but not late enough to hear that there was a new guy coming named Brock. I cracked a few pokemon-trainer jokes to my even less pokemon-inclined friends as he buzzed up to the condo, and in he walked. Its three founders lived in a venture-capital-funded mansion in L.A. where boys -- promised stardom in Web clips -- [filed lawsuits claiming to have been] raped after decadent parties.
All 5'5" of him.
He was an interesting looking dude, stylish tight-plaid black and white blazer over his white button-down shirt and jeans - I had to wonder who was tailoring clothes for a man so tiny. Indeterminate age, although I later discovered he was a few months younger than I at 27.They were later dubbed by the New York Post as the "dot-com perverts."
He talked about his business ventures - he appeared to have been involved in innumerous internet/new media/video games business in his short lifetime, and spoke with the knowledge of an entrepreneur of 40 years experience. This man was no bullshit, he knew his stuff. It was like he was living in a whole other world.Where Are They Now
Co-Founder of a new internet based entertainment company called The Digital Entertainment Network
He also brought a nice 20-year old Burgundian Pinot Noir, that was quite nice although I'm not a huge Pinot fan. We tend to stick to $12-$20 bottles for our weekly tastings, but this is a nice change.
And part of that world is as a co-founder of motherfucking IGE.The co-founders of IGE are Brock Pierce, a former child movie star, and Alan Debonneville.
I met one of the two founders of IGE tonight. IGE, as in IGE.com, as in the company that pioneered RMTing, that ruins your favorite MMORPGS. I met the man, in the flesh, and he stood 5'5".
Fun fucking fact:Yeah, that's right. He played the young Emilio Esteves in the first two Mighty Ducks movies, at the age of 11.The Mighty Ducks (1992) .... Gordon (10 years old)
Oh, what's that?Yeah, he was the lead kid in the Sinbad vehicle "First Kid". Yep. The guy that founded IGE. That guy.First Kid (1996) .... Luke Davenport
After learning of his venture known as ige.com (he had no idea I ever played a MMORPG when he talked about it), I quickly texted a friend of mine who I met in FFXI.
My text:At this point I'm already like "holy crap I can't believe the founder of ige.com is right here...and goddamnit he's tiny."The sole founder of ige.com is at wine club right now. My mind is fucking blown.
Then I get the mind-fucking-blowing reply:Not wanting to rack up my friend's texting charges, I slipped outside for a call. Now, at this point I didn't believe him - figured he'd either gotten the wrong guy, or the wiki had been vandalized in a 4chan-style lulzy attack, or something.Just wikid him. Fled the US cuz of underage sexual abuse scandal. NY Post "dot com perverts" arrested by spanish police. Also, no more sms til 16th Stop sending
But when the name "Brock" was confirmed, I just about flipped my shit.
The guy sitting there is not only the founder of ige.com, but he's also heavily suspected in either raping or helping rape a number of young boys when he was in his late teens/early 20's - whether he did it or not, he definitely fled to Spain to live as a fugitive for a couple years before being tracked down by fucking Interpol and arrested.
Slipping back into the meeting, trying to act casual that this was really fucking happening (although I knew his suspicions were aroused), I just basked in the enjoyment of the amazingness that was occurring. Now, for lulz, for great justice, for whatever - if he ever comes to wine club again...what must I do?By May 2000, the start-up was bankrupt. Before long, its headquarters were gutted, the expensive computer equipment and office chairs sold off for a fraction of their original cost. Around Hollywood, rumors flew that Collins-Rector, Shackley, and Pierce were about to be arrested on embezzlement and sexual offenses. Before any charges were filed, though, the three men disappeared.
They didn't turn up again until May 2002, when a tip to Interpol led authorities to raid their luxury villa in Marbella, on the Spanish Riviera—an area British tabloids have dubbed the Costa del Crime due to its high population of English-speaking fugitives. Among the items recovered from the residence were guns, machetes, a trove of jewels, and child pornography. Pierce and Shackley were held for about a month by Spanish police and then released.
Tell me BG, what next?
