Just how apathetic can people get?

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25475759/

NEW YORK - City hospital officials agreed in court Tuesday to implement reforms at a psychiatric ward where surveillance footage showed a woman falling from her chair, writhing on the floor and dying as workers failed to help for more than an hour.

Esmin Green, 49, had been waiting in the emergency room for nearly 24 hours when she toppled from her seat at 5:32 a.m. on June 19, falling face down on the floor.

She was dead by 6:35, when someone on the medical staff, flagged down by a person in the waiting room, finally approached, nudged Green with her foot, and gently prodded her shoulder, as if to wake her. The staffer then left and returned with someone wearing a white lab coat who examined her and summoned help.

    Video might anger some.

... There are really no words to describe how utterly disgusted I am right now. It is like the people there think, "Oh, just another mental patient laying on the floor."

How the hell is that okay?!

I don't think I can watch that, so I'll save myself.

This is just horrible. Absolutely horrible.

Work has been a bitch and a half with reviews since Kings County is a part of a ring of hospitals that mine is a part of. I'm just glad I don't work in emergency or in kings county, that shit was ridiculous.

The fact that 2 security guards, and a DOCTOR came in and stared at her then just walked away shows just how fucked up the people at that hospital are. And the nurse kicks her with her foot.

Honestly, anyone who willingly goes to kings county knows full well that the place is fucking shitty. No, that does not excuse the people who should have all been fired, not "suspended with the possibility" like the nurse and the 2 guards, it was gross negligence on everyone's part. But I wouldnt be caught dead in that place (bad pun, I know).

Somewhat unrelated, but it seems i finally understood what happened. These people have "dead body homophobia". Notice how in this video people just stare at the body of the old man for a while instead of rushing to help? Yes, i totally figured this out.

This is one of those shocking pieces of video which makes you wonder about the fate of civilization. 78-year-old Angel Arce Torres was crossing a Hartford, Connecticut street on May 30th when a passing car hit him and then sped away from the scene. That's not really the shocking part; things like that happen every day. The shocking (and sad) part is the reaction from passers-by: Nothing. Oh sure, moped guy circles the man in the street, and someone probably calls 911 'cause the cops show eventually, but still. Torres is in critical condition in a Hartford Hospital and the police are hunting for the scumbag hit-and-runners.
BTW Ryko, when i visited Brooklyn, the first impression i got was how incredibly crappy it was.

It sounds more likely that people don't want to help because they don't know HOW to help...you can do way more harm then good if you don't know first aid or anything else, but in a hospital it's kinda moot lol....

    HEY Q_Q

You're right though. I wouldn't be caught dead in 90% of the medical facilities in Brooklyn, Queens, or The Bronx.

Damn, that's pretty sad. I just don't understand how people didn't do anything, it's an emergency room for crying out loud. People don't go there to sit patiently and wait their turn, they go there to get looked at during fucking emergencies.

What bothered me most is that the security guard couldn't be bothered enough to get out of his god damn chair to look at the lady. Just rolled up, then rolled away.

Would that count as Depraved Indifference, or Criminally Negligent Homicide?

We'll have to stay tuned for newer Law & Order episodes.

I think this case is more likely to show up on Boston Legal for someone to give a lengthy speech on, but I could see Law & Order doing something along these lines, maybe a bit more sinister though.

    On topic: unbelievable.

I remember seeing this on the news when it happened. This is a really, really fucked up story. Mental patient or not, no one deserves that.

This happened not to far from where I work, maybe 5 mins away and probably 30 seconds away from Hartford Hospital. The officer seen arriving was actually on the way to another call when he came across the guy in the road. I can’t find the article but the police chief blasted the people of the city for just sitting there watching and doing nothing. It came out about 4 days later that 1 person called 911. The call was placed about 2 mins after the hit and run occurred. Unfortunately Hartford has turned into a shit hole. The guy is paralyzed from the neck down and the drivers of the cars have yet to be caught. Last I heard there was a 20k reward leading to there arrest.

If you don’t know anything about treating medical injuries then yeah moving them or trying to help them is a bad idea, but that doesn’t mean you have to be an asshole and just leave the poor guy laying in the middle of the road. Least you can do is try and comfort him and call 911.

Well I guess people are pretty apathetic, I don't know though, who really cares, it's not as if it matters.
