I think there's a time and place to use your phone at work and that's on your breaks, not when you're on company time. I'm the Production manager of where I work and I put my foot down about a month ago when I saw cell phone useage getting out of hand. I made it very clear to all of my employees that if it's not an emergency you shouldn't be on the phone, period. Voicemail is there for a reason and the beauty of it is... you can call people back on your break or after you get off. They get two 15 minute breaks and one 30 minute lunch to make/take calls. I see no reason for it to be used outside of those times. Texting falls into that same category.

Believe it or not, there are kids in high school who do want to learn and don't want to be distracted by some doubchebag on their cellphone.

I work in a newsroom and even though it's apeshit crazy in there. Nothing is more annoying than having someone be doing something and their cellphone goes off with their shitty 'Bust it Baby' by Plies ringtone.

But during high school nothing was more annoying/frustrating than when I'd actually be interested (or conversely be struggling in a subject and actually needing to pay attention to help my grade) in something and having the person behind me texting their friend/ and aughing about some stupid shit their friend texted him. I would LOVE when teachers anwered the kids phone, those kids never had their phones on again.

Oh man, I hate this crap. Although this is probably because I hate cell phones, in general.

I don't mind texting as long as it's not like, constant texting, but actually talking on a cell phone for personal calls, especially in a service job...what the hell. I once saw a girl fired in retail for refusing to get off of her cell phone while actually on the selling floor.

lol at kids who've barely lived, thinking that after popping a few pills they're better, faster, cooler, smarter than anyone else.

Exactly. I remember the big deal when I was in high school 10 years ago was that pagers were deemed illegal at school. Why the hell do all of these parents give their children cell phones?

As far as the OP's question... I'll use my cell at work whilst I keep working, but my phone conversations are usually extremely short. I don't chat on the phone while at work just to chat.

I used to text like mad, nowadays I take 2 or 3 calls a day for about 4-5 minutes each. I use my cell phone to actually get my work done at the end of my shift though so *shrug*, otherwise i'm usually sleeping. High school kids should have cell phones, but unless it's from a family member during class there's no reason to answer the stupid thing.

I have to take the battery out of my phone and place it in a locker each and every day I come into work.

Then again, I'm a DOD contractor ... and well cell phones can be a huge security risk in the wrong hands, especially since all phones now have cameras and most can be linked via USB. Then again, USB hard drives as well as printers are no no's as well.

    Why?

    No, srsly
I suppose the kid could have a beeper or the parents could just call the school but honestly it's a matter of convenience and not necessarily keeping your kid on a leash as long as he's responsible. I grew up getting the benefit of the doubt until I fucked it up, and then the privilege was taken away, assuming we could afford it in the first place. I'd rather have a way to contact my kid wherever he is if something important comes up as opposed to leaving it to them calling should they have to stay at billy's past 10. If the kid fucks up on the phone use in the wrong place then feel free to take it away but emergency contact is rather big nowadays, especially in states where a lot of highschool kids are flat out allowed to drive.

2-3 seconds? Jesus christ. Do you only type "Hi" and send it or something? I can type fast but to type and send a text in 2-3 secs is insane to me.

With auto complete and the memory for commonly used words the only ones that should throw you off are actually the short ones, 2-3 seconds might be pushing it but a good sentence shouldnt take more than 5ish.

god Kyre is such a little bitch. Oh woe is him just because mommy and daddy hate him and he hates the world and "society" makes him conform oh dear oh poor little child. What a fucking baby. You might as well swallow a bullet tonight. Save the world from another sack of shit that won't amount to anything. No wonder you're only interested in prepubescent girls, you never matured mentally past 8 years old.

I taught college lab classes as a TA when I was in grad school. I've kicked kids out of the lab because they wouldn't stop texting. Frankly, I don't care what you do when you go to a lecture so long as it doesn't disturb other people. If you sleep, text, space out, whatever. In college, it's your dime. Just don't bother anyone that wants to pay attention. However in a lab setting they work in groups. If you can't help out and participate then you're dragging other people down and you're leeching off of their effort. Don't sign up for the class if you don't want to put the time in and help out.

Also, I'm a grown ass man, I'll use MY phone whenever the hell I want. Really not important who doesn't like it, hopefully they'll run to the internet and start a thread.

So you can see the sense in allowing your kid to step into a multi thousand pound moving vehicle under their own control and calling the cops unnecessarily due to being unable to contact them because you didn't give them a convenient means of doing so but can't see why having an easy way to ring em up and find out what's up is practical?

To each their own, backwards to me.

I always found it to be incredibly rude when people's phones would ring during class, and (if they actually answered it) when they didn't bother to leave the room first. It's so distracting. The instructor has to stop what he/she's saying, everyone's going to watch the person whose phone is ringing. The whole flow of the class gets disrupted. I always kept mine on vibrate, and the ONLY reason I did that was so that if whoever was watching my kids at the time needed to inform me of an emergency, I'd know about it in a timely manner. If I didn't have kids I'd have turned it off.

I also found it incredibly rude when students would giggle and laugh about their text messages. It's distracting. I always cheered the teachers who took phones. Kids need to learn respect.

Unfortunately, though, from what I've seen, they grow further into this "fuck the world, fuck authority" mentality that Krye seems to have. They didn't take your phone to be dicks. They took it to teach you a lesson about respect. If you can't at least respect the teacher, respect your fellow students for fuck's sake.
