I can see the use of cells for teens, though it depends a lot on where you are. If you're in an urban area the kids are out and about and it's harder to find them. I grew up in a small town, and at 14 where the fuck was I going to go but down the street? I wasn't getting on the subway to go across town. I could get where I was willing to ride my bike. Obviously it's situational. When they drive it's a good idea, but millions of people managed just fine without them growing up. Not required. If I were to get one I'd get some limited thing where they could only call so many people and had limited minutes etc. It would be for keeping in touch and emergencies, not as a toy. When they pay it themselves they can get whatever plan they want.
*shrug* and I lived in the middle of the quintessential urban area, so I didn't need to drive but where I was and what I was doing was always checked on every day at 5.
That's perfectly fine imo.It would be for keeping in touch and emergencies, not as a toy. When they pay it themselves they can get whatever plan they want.
I turned my phone on during class one time (and that was on vibrate) last semester. And before I did that, I informed the professor that I was leaving my cell phone on and I'd probably be leaving the class for a few moments at some point during the class. My kid was in the hospital and the doctor was supposed to see her while I was in class.
I text a lot at work. But I dont like answering my phone while at work because I dont like the idea of my personal life being inadvertantly overheard by my coworkers. I cant stand office gossip and so I am pretty big on keeping my personal and professional life separate.![]()
The only reason I agreed to get a cell phone was when I was often making a 14-hour drive between Chicago and North Carolina. Cell phones in my mind have always been a means of emergency contact, even though now I don't have a house line and the cell is my only live-wire connection. I get -very- pissy when I receive phone calls outside of evening hours, and I assume if you're calling me at work, you're missing a limb and in that case why the fuck are you calling me and not 911.
My boss has a very busy job where she is not usually in her office. Most of the time she's in meetings or between meetings, or walking to perimeter as she likes to call it. Her husband works a similar job, and they have a few children.
One of these children is in High school, and doesn't have a car. He is also in many extra curricular activities, such as basketball and school clubs whose schedules change pretty often at the drop of a hat. Most of the time his Mother is late to pick him up from school, sometimes in the effect of thirty minutes.
As much as I hate cell phones and believe that many people use them in such a way that degrades general respect in daily human interaction, I'm not going to be bullheaded about giving them to teens. I want my niece to have a cell phone by the time she's fourteen, but it would be strictly for family calls and never during school time. It's pretty easy to keep track of who she'd talk to and when from the bill.
When you get to the point where your kids are self-reliant on a regular basis, not giving them a cellphone is doing them a disservice, imo. Then they have no excuse for not keeping you informed.
Think about any given widespread accident/school shooting/other public disasters where getting info out of the emergency crews ASAP is impossible...if you knew your kid was potentially affected and you couldn't find out information as to whether they were safe or not, wouldn't you want a direct line to them to be sure they're ok?
Of the 6 of 8 hours I'm on the phone at work, probably 5.5 is business related. I rarely ever text.
I work in a really small office (3-4 people in the office at all times usually), and I work the front desk. Everyone here is really open about cell phone use. My boss has grandchildren that she is the guardian of, so her phone is on at all times, and she takes phone calls whenever she feels like it. Our service manager takes personal calls at her desk phone a lot of the time, which is usually her parents. You can tell because she speaks in Spanish. =P
I use my cell phone at work, yes. I text a lot, because I am a teenage girl. I don't have that many minutes, so when people just need to tell me one thing I prefer that they text. I also have a phone with a full keyboard, so yes, 2-3 seconds is the norm for a text haha. I have had people go "Did you even read that?!" As I read a text, reply, and close my phone.
I didn't get my cell phone until I started working and driving. And at that point in time I couldn't text message. Not until I was paying my mom the extra money was I allowed to text. I think if you have someone that could be responsible with a cellphone then it is okay. My boss' grandson has a cell phone and he is only 11... I have worked for the company since January and he has gone through 3 cell phones... That is not being responsible imo.
Is she hot.Our service manager takes personal calls at her desk phone a lot of the time, which is usually her parents. You can tell because she speaks in Spanish. =P
My mom got my little brother a cell phone BECAUSE he is irresponsible. Hes 16 now and was 13 when he got his phone. He tends to lock himself out of the house a lot and hed need to call me or my sister to come open the door for him (Now they live in a house with a lockbox but at the time they didnt.) and it also had a GPS tracking system on it in case he were to ever get lost/god forbid kidnapped.
It is also now a safety thing, and now my mom says if hes ever out with his friends and hes in a situation where getting in the car with them would not be the safe choice, he could use his phone to call one of us to pick him up without punishment (My mom doesnt allow or turn a blind eye to him drinking. But she knows what goes on and knows teens will do things whether or not she approves. While she hopes hell always make the good decision to hang around people who wouldnt put him in that position, shed rather him be safe than try to hide it and get himself hurt because of it.).
Not to derail, but I totally agree with this sort of mentality. It is so much better knowing that there is someone you can call when you are in an uncomfortable situation than worrying about what your guardians would do to you if they found out. I have never felt like I could call my mother. I know she wouldn't be upset, just more disappointed than anything.
Ah Krye you never fail to come into a thread and sling some shit around. This was a record though less than a page into the thread.
For me I work in a cube I am on my computer all day long so I talk on my cell phone a lot. I try not to be too loud and disturb others, my supervisor even makes fun of me because I am on the phone every time he walks over. I get off the phone instantly if it hurts my productivity though.
I kinda hope Kyre posts again :/
