Speaking of computers, I hate people who use them in class. Chances are they arnt using them to take notes, and if they are, the constant CLICKITYCLACK makes me want to stab my ear.

when does krye not shit up a thread? I think half the reason he hasn't been smacked with the ban hammer yet is cause it's so damn amusing to watch him make an ass of himself every chance he gets.

No joke- a close friend took the Illinois Bar Exam about 4 years ago. This is not a fun experience. It is 2 days of about 8 hours a day of testing, and little of it is filling in circles. It's mostly writing. His girlfriend took the exam as well. In her group there was a girl who was kicked out in the LAST HOUR on the second day because a friend who was taking the exam the same weekend on the east coast called when she was done- too bad there is a 1 hour time difference and in Illinois there was another hour left. So basically, after 15 hours of testing her phone went off and poof, there goes her bar exam. She had to wait 8 months or something to try to take it again. If you know how much work goes into preparing for these exams, you'd know how that would be just an absolutely crushing experience.

I don't bring my cell phone to work. People who may need to reach me know my work number and know only to use it if they legitimately need to reach me.

A car, sadly, is a necessity when you live 10-15 miles from any stores.
Get a bike, you could still get to a store much faster than walking, it would just take longer than having a car.

Move closer to town. Living 20 miles outside the urban area is a luxury, not a necessity.

Most people consider living in an urban area a luxary though. For some reason being close to everything and paying out the ass for it is good. I have to drive a half mile just to hit a road, and another few miles to hit a main road. What are these 'water lines' that come in from the street that is referred to?

K, i'll tell my parents, who bought their house originally as a 3 bedroom for under 30k, to go move into a town where it would be 70k minimum. BRB.

we actually moved 4 times when I was younger, because of the schools.
Must be nice. Houses in my area are gong for 250-500K, 20 miiles outside of Birmingham.

When I was younger, I couldn't see a reason for kids to have cellphones, but obviously times have changed, you have to adapt to them, kids will have cellphones because it's a different world to what we had 10-15 years ago.
People are all about connectivity these days, thanks to the internet, so when they're not on the internet, this is another form of connecting.

Personally, I still don't see a good reason to keep a phone. I'm 23, have a very average job where nothing exciting happens , nobody important calls me except for my mother 2-3 times a day asking if I'm ok (??????????) so I just stopped turning my phone on, hasn't been on in a good few months.

On topic of mothers+cell phone, if I ever have kids one day, I will send a text if I am concerned on there wherabouts rather than an embarrassing call, many facepalming moments are when you're 19, at a friend's gathering, and the third phone call you get is by the same person, your mother.

Hey I think I know why I don't carry a cell phone anymore. Good thread!

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

it's kinda interesting how this semi- turned to teenagers with cellphones.

A few years ago Disney had a off-shoot company called DisneyMobile. Basically for a price you could get a plan/phones for parents and kids. The best part about this phone plan was the parents had all the control about the phone.

The parents could set what times the kids could use them. IE the phone would be disabled during school hours if they wanted it to be. Also the parents were the ones that put in the numbers, so you could limit it to be strictly family calling emergency basis.

But here's what I think is the best part, the kids were allowed so many text/minutes per month. Once they reached that limit they could ONLY call their parents numbers. Which meant a. parents wouldn't get overcharged on bills 2. the kids could still call incase of an emergency.

This has to be the smartest fucking idea ever. I remember the price not being to bad considering it semi shut off after being maxed out for the month. My bf works in the cellphone section at bestbuy and I can't even count how many times he tells me a parent comes in all distressed about their 1000$ phone bill from their kid.

The sad part is they didn't advertise this enough and december of last year the company was basically cancelled. (I guess they still have something like it in Japan only).

Seriously my kid won't have a phone in HS unless another plan like this comes out. I think every company should offer something like this, it's awesome.

As to the people saying their kids having phone is a good thing, has to be the dumbest idea in my mind. I went through hs just find without a cell phone, it's really not that important for them to have it.

Oh, and ya going back into teaching but when I was a long-term sub I would take kids phones away all the time. I don't care if you don't care about my class. If you're in it, and I see you texting, that shit is mine till the parents come get it.

I use my cell phone very sparingly if at all. I have my own plan, and always have.

My phone is constantly on vibrate, and when in areas where cells are not allowed (moreso testing centers or during exams etc), it is on silent (I never turn it off because I'll forget to turn it back on and realize I missed a big call).

Now at work (to stay on topic lol), I work part-time as a paint manager while my full-time counterpart works with me. Everyday he gets the same phone calls (no cell phones, he has no use for it since he's always within a direct line of his family except when in the car [hey, cheaper bills amirite] ): in the morning it's from his wife, and in the late afternoon it's from his sister. Calls can usually last at least 3-4 sessions depending on how often he gets interrupted.

Now, we share a large stainless steel desk which houses two cabinets below and a computer for the whole paint spiel (a second computer for our premium paint + automatic dispenser directly behind, and there is not a lot of moving space between us). Now, our phone is behind us in between our two paint dispensers, so when he picks up the phone, he has to take it and lean up on the desk. Now imagine me helping a customer trying to get their paint. It's extremely hard for me to run back and forth through a phone chord getting from a dispenser to my paint shaker or to the paint shelf.

He'll also somehow wonder his way up to the front counter where two phones happen to be. And when he's on the phone there, he'll put his wife/sister on hold to answer it. What is worse is he'll page the floor instead of use his radio to transfer a call (we are old school, we don't have a reception desk in our retail store like some bigger ones around our area). Worst part? Hangs up the phone without releasing the call, so the entire floor hears that loud click from hanging up a phone.

Never used my cell at work except to call up lunch orders really lol. Occasional text from my sister maybe, but nothing serious. Plus it never effected my productivity any at all.

Just because you can go without something doesn't mean it's not a good thing, or that people shouldn't be allowed to have it. I really don't get this mentality of "i did without it so its bad if some does with it, ok? lolz"

Cellphones at work is perfectly acceptable imo. As many other people said, aslong as it doesn't affect your working habits/productivity or annoy other people it should be fine. As for teenagers having cellphones/cars, while yes, there will always be the teenage girls that talk on there cellphones on class and constantly text, there will also be the teenagers that need their cellphones to contact their parents about extracurriculur activities and changes in plans after school. The same things go for cars, yeah some kids in highschool will only have cars to drive to friends houses and parties, but there will be kids who buy there own cars and have jobs. It really does depend on the situation for the question though

Students aren't allowed to carry pocket knives to school. If I see one, I take it and I tell them explicitly that they WON'T be getting it back.

with that said, a few Supreme Court cases bring this to mind, and keep in mind, i'm completely conjecturing here, but what if schools WERE to ban them? Would people sue for their kids to have them? Would you?
Not to derail, but again, coming from a very rich school -

About two weeks before the end of the first semester, a student of mine was caught on campus smoking pot. Along with a few other disciplinary strikes against him, it turned out he was expelled, and forced to enroll in the continuation school. To finish out the first semester, I had to meet with him to give him his final exam. After he finished, I was talking with him a bit, and he told me how he was adjusting to the new school, etc. He also told me how stressed he was, because his lawyer didn't think he'd be able to get the district to back down, and let him attend prom at the end of the year.

Yes, a lawyer was paid to argue whether or not an expelled student would be allowed to go to prom.

In my HS it was in the handbook that a cell would be taken if it was seen in class, it also said it was up to the dean if the student was to get it back or not. So if you were caught with a cell, high chances are you would never get it back and you had to go get another or live without one. Great lesson if you ask me. No legal issues either since you sign agreements when you enroll.
