I know what he means, but you can't bring your US rights and priviledges to China with you.

I don't personally have anything against legit Chinese players playing, but as a (as-of-yet-unenforced) technicality, if you live in China you aren't supposed to be playing.

It doesn't matter if you are a time-traveling zombie George Washington and have lived and played FFXI in the US for over 200 years prior to moving to China. It doesn't matter if you wear red, white and blue and hang an American flag outside your house in China. You're not supposed to be playing.

It's just that no one has cared enough to actually check or enforce that sort of thing. So far, it's merely a bit of text in Chinese law and SE's TOS that no one ever reads, or is so easy to get around that it's impractical to enforce.

Do you have a TOS with the watch company? Is there a Chinese law regarding watches?

As an example, look at regional DVD restrictions. You buy a DVD here and take it to Europe, it won't work over there. Unless you brought your DVD player with you, in which case it works but you're technically not supposed to do that. It's just kind of impractical to enforce and people will find ways around it by importing or modding. But technically, you shouldn't be watching DVDs from outside your region.

To be specific about FFXI, SE has released the game in specific countries and only supports and recognizes the game in those countries. It is not illegal to play FFXI in China on account of the TOS, but SE is not obligated to accomodate players in China. From China's perspective, they have stricter laws regarding gaming, time spent gaming, MMOs, and other crap that essentially make FFXI illegal without special mods to meet China's requirements on MMOs/games.

EDIT: Regardless of how you want to look at it, the laughability of chinese requirements on games, etc. the whole matter comes down to whether SE is obligated to give a shit about players in a country they did not release the game in, have no support for, and do not recognize as a player base. And the answer to that is, no. They can ban China without repercussion, because as far as they're concerned, the game doesn't exist there. And if everybody followed the import/export agreements and laws, it wouldn't exist there.
