Well the primary difference is modifying windows is well within your rights established by the MS EULA. Otherwise people wouldn't be making programs for it.So SE just needs to bring it to Microsoft's attention, call in a favor or two, and...
Oh god, Alla as the new BG, it's like a Marvel What If? gone horribly wrong.
Hey, I'll have you know my slutcock/post count ratio is pretty accurate! And lol at some people being reduced to using join dates and post counts to win an argument. Where's that "Remember kids, the higher your post count, the bigger your penis is!" graphic?
I still think that it is a sucky ruling. Just because something other than Microsoft copied it into RAM it is a copyright infringement. For example you can't run FFXI on a Linux system with Win4Lin. Not that I would.
Edit: I actually do feel my penis getting bigger.
There is no better reason to edit a post.
Correct. This makes things like WINE technically illegal(I think). Which makes me sad =/I still think that it is a sucky ruling. Uh...such questions have been asked to the dev team constantly. Examples:
We ask for SE "official" windower - we receive a windowed mode that is buggy for the majority of people that use it
We ask for more lines in a macro - we receive more fail 6 line macro buttons
We asked about improving the graphics in the game (draw distance) - we get "PS2 limitations" and lies that the game would upgrade to a new verison of DirectX
We ask for automatic item sort - we finally just got it
We ask for ways for FFXI to natively do all the things that TPwatch, Recast, and Distance plugins do - we get "we will/are look(ing) into it" if anything
Windower isn't something as trivial as a security blanket. It is proof that there is someone out there willing to listen and answer the player bases cries for improvements and actually do them successfully.
No one is shitting on non-windower users because you are fine with a shitty UI and macro interface that hasn't gotten a much needed overhaul. Don't shit on those that use it because we are looking for ways to improve how the game looks and feels and are excited to have a small group of people dedicated to this goal and ask for nothing in return.
Hey, I love my macros, they aren't shitty!
*cry*
Meanie!
I always forget about the item sort, I still randomly open inventory and tap triangle before remembering that it does it by itself now.
My only real observation is that the Windower has allowed the SE programmers to become better coders for the simple fact that for the first time in years they are finally looking outside of the little box they call their 'vision' and are actually improving the interface of the game (Be it at a snails pace and nowhere as well as the Windower team).
Like it or not, competition is good. The windower team has forced FFXI progress by running circles around the original design, and SE was forced to finally put their tail in between their legs and admit that maybe the suggestions people were offering were in fact good ideas. They even got to see them implemented firsthand, and I bet there were some awesome coversations when the devs got their hands on these tools, and saw how much better they make the game.
Why can't SE just suck it up and hire the Windower Dev team? Seriously, I really don't think anyone at this point would mind...
No, we asked for auto STACKING - like LL does, which we did not get. The new auto sort feature is completely USELESS to anyone who manually sorts their inventory to custom locations. And i've heard others say it still doesnt work fully (? dunno about it cause Its useless to me and i still use LL)We ask for automatic item sort - we finally just got it
I personally dont sort my inventory so i can keep all BLM specific gear together, and mixed gear up top, so when i change jobs, boom go down list starting with first blm specific gear and then grab my whm gear from mog. and vice versa. Where as sorting makes it so i have to go through entire inventory, and select which items arnt shared between both jobs 1 by 1.
Auto Sorting = Fail
Auto Stacking = Win
and sadly, it would of been easier for them to implement auto stacking than it would of sorting. They wasted development time doing more work than they needed to.
I thought it DID auto-stack, I don't remember having 12 single crystals sitting at the bottom of my inventory since I turned it on.
I completely agree, except the code to auto-stack and auto-sort both already exist in the game, so it would have been just as easy for SE to copy the LL functionality instead of doing it so the game automatically does an auto-sort instead of making you ask for it.
I am used to 'new' items being at the bottom, so the autosort feature has screwed me up a few times when looking for an item I needed in a hurry.
Fucking hell I wish I could stop that.
I see this complaint a lot, and it's always come off as incredibly nit-picky to me. And the majority of the playerbase didn't specify "We need auto-stacking but not sorting!" that I recall. It's very nice for people who didn't have LL already, those who do would likely use LL anyways. We asked for something and they gave it to us, people shouldn't complain because they have to take an extra 2.3 seconds to look closer at their inventory when it auto-sorts.
That's the exact point. The auto-sort function works just as if you selected it, that is items get moved around. In your example, the crystals got moved to the top each time you got one.
What LL does is stack items as they come into your inventory. So the newest stacks will be at the bottom. That's the only difference.
Oh, I can't say for everyone, as I don't personally have to swap a lot of gear between jobs, but that doesn't sound useful to ME, since I'm used to consumables up top, gear by slot down the list, craftables/whatnot at the bottom, from habitually sorting items myself for so long.
Auto-sort was a huge win in my opinion, but I guess I could see situations where it would be annoying.
