Password Length Issue

Long story short, my PC that has all my FFXI stuff on it blew up as it sometimes does, being the decrepit old piece of shit that it is. Luckily I took the incentive to write down my account's password on a piece of paper a few weeks ago for fear of this happening. Now I want to play FFXI on my brother's PC whilst mine is being given electronic CPR/euthanised, but I can't get into my account.

My brother's PC has FFXI and all expansion packs installed, however I've not used it since SE implemented the input keyboard for typing passwords. Now, the trouble is that this input method only seems to allow 15 characters to be inputted... and my password (which was saved automatically on my computer prior to the implementation of the input keyboard) is 17 characters. A friend has confirmed that he can still log into my account (zomg im geting my stuf stole'd), so I've certainly not been hacked or anything.

So my question is: how do I get around this apparent 15-character password limit? I apologise if this issue has been addressed already, but I couldn't spy anything relevant scanning through recent topic titles and the search function is being extremely sluggish for me right now. Thanks in advance.

Yeah, it still won't fit in. I might just get my friend to change the password since he has the current one auto-saved and, therefore, can still log in.

Are you sure that you're not able to get all 17 characters in? The field might only be 15 characters wide and scrolling after input exceeds the field width.

Yes, after I paste in the 17-character password I counted only 15 asterisks. Tried pasting it in in two lots of characters but no success. Guess I'll just have to wait for my friend to come home from work so he can reset it for me.

Counting won't exactly help since only 15 would be visible. Did you try submitting after pasting in the password?

Yeah, about twenty times. So either the character limit is cockbocking me or I've written down the password wrong which I can practically guarantee hasn't happened.

Edit: after talking to a friend we realised... in order to reset my password my friend will have to enter the current password into the form, which also uses the 15-character-limit input keyboard. Therefore, if the same issue occurs as with me trying to log into the account, he won't be able to reset it. Guess I'll need to call SE then... here's hoping I have all the info they need to reset my password. Fucking retards, changing the character limit on passwords without asking people to alter their existing ones to fit in with this.

For shits and giggles, try logging in without the last two characters of your password (or however many it is you're over the limit). I know you have it saved on the other system, but it could be dropping them there too.

Rather than it warn me, it simply dropped them from the stored password (I know without a doubt it had all of them when I was at the "confirm new account" page, so it wasn't like I mistyped it to begin with, but when I tried to login I couldn't even type the character, it gave the little DUN DUN error sound). Tried the password without the characters it wouldn't allow and it worked fine.

No, because his friend would have to input the current password to change it, which he can't do due to the character limit.

Seconding this post. I had the exact same issue, created a password that had a $ in it. Tried logging in sans $ and it worked.

Are you sure your password isn't actually 15 characters, and the 16th is just always cut off and irrelevant?

I guess the only thing left to do is double-check with my friend that I haven't written down the password wrong somehow... after that I'm stumped. I don't have the credit card I use to pay for FFXI any more so I don't know if they'll allow me to change my password by calling them up.

Registration codes and personal information should be enough for them to change your info.

Well thankfully my friend actually was able to change the password, though I'm not sure why the password-changing form allowed him to input the original password whilst the POL login form did not. Anyway, thanks for all the helpful responses.

Possibly, I'll have to check. I change my password every couple months or so, and to be honest I'm not sure if the last change was before or after the input system.

I just figured I'd post here since it's semi-relevant. My password is 13 characters long and I just d/led the PC POL update today. Now it's telling me that none of my passwords work and when I go to the final "log in" screen, it makes a weird noise and my password now looks shorter than it should.

Any ideas?
