    Anyone ever work for Tutor.com?

I applied to them a few months ago mainly because I was bored and partially out of curiousity. They gave me a bunch of tests to take to see what subject areas I would be able to tutor in. I was told that there was no positions available for the areas I wanted to tutor in.

About a week ago I got an email stating that there was an opening. Now I'm just curious to know what others who have worked for them think about the company. Are they worth working for? I'm kind of broke, and I do need money, but I don't even know how much they pay (they don't tell you until you start to work for them). They're not asking for any money up front (or any money from me at any point in time) so it doesn't seem likely to be a scam, but I'm just wondering what anyone else thinks about this website.

Do they mention the payment scheme? Do they pay per hour, or per tutoring session? Is it a steady pay or dependant on how much tutoring you do? Will you have consistent hours?

    Google:

They pay based on level: Probation, Tutor 1, Tutor 2, Tutor 3, then they have a mentoring prg: Mentor and Sr. Mentor. I think the Proby pay was 8 or 9/hr ?? I know Tutor 1 is 11 b/c that's where I'm at. and then the pay scale goes up w/each level.
Can't remember how long it took after the writing. Not too long I don't think.

    Hope that helps

Seems like a pretty sweet deal if the quote Tyche found was from a good source.

From reading various forums, this is highly competitive and a really good company to work for. Pay is great for a college students/stay-at-home moms.

    Hmm, sounds good.

And Khamsim, they pay based on the amount of available hours you have. So if I'm logged in as available for 5 hours of tutoring, then I will get paid for 5 hours (but I don't know the rate of pay. Based on Tyche's source, it seems pretty good).

I don't know how consistent the hours are.

Regardless of whether you actually tutor someone during that time? I'd have figured it would depend on who they scheduled you with that day, unless they do "walk-ins".

Basically you go on available status and when someone logs in that needs tutoring, they are assigned to someone who's available. I think they limit what times you're allowed to be available (so that someone can't just go available 12am to 8am and tutor like one person in an 8 hour period and still get paid).

I would think that 12am to 8am would be a prime time for tutoring as folks are cramming or desperately trying to finish whatever. 9am-12pm would probably be lower due to people actually showing up to classes.

This has peaked my interest and I may apply!

How much education do you have and were the tests very difficult?

    http://www.tutor.com/apply/

The tests are pretty easy. They're all multiple choice and only about 15 questions each. You have to either be in college or have a college degree to apply. They have a lot of different subjects to choose from, and there's a list that shows which subjects actually have openings.

After the first multiple choice questions, they come to your house and give you a polygraph and an intense interrogation. Afterwards is the endurance test, where they toss you in the wilderness for 40 days to see if you survive. If you pass, then you go through the strength test, and trust me, that boulder is harder to move than it looks. If you pass both of these, you're sent off to bootcamp in Vietnam for two months, after which time you get to become a tutor.

One of my previous paragraphs may or may not be true.

I worked with Tutor.com for three months. During that time, I received minimal support from management, experienced significant delays on communication from management's end, and noted management's extreme tendency to avoid actual interpersonal communication like it was the plague.

The service absolutely is teeming with abusive students who are rude and disrespectful. Tutor.com's management and so-called "mentors" will evade your grievances regarding aberrant student behavior, and chastise the tutor for not be able to "meet the student's needs" even when it's blatantly apparent that the student is dicking around intentionally and getting a sophomoric enjoyment out of harassing and "trolling" the tutors.

I was terminated from Tutor.com for essentially no other reason than Tutor.com's management and "mentors" being incompetent and completely unresponsive to concerns and feedback provided by their tutors.

The only way I expect anyone could succeed with Tutor.com long-term is if one:
    A. Has no life, no self-esteem or self-respect, and takes no pride in their work
    B. Doesn't mind being abused by students who go out of their way to waste the tutor's time, and,
    C. Doesn't mind when management ignores your concerns and then blames you for their inadequacies.

In other words, if you value your skills and expertise as a tutor, and take pride in your work, and expect the people you work for to be equally-invested and equally-responsive as you are ... then Tutor.com is NOT for you; don't waste your time.
If on the other hand, you're callous or ambivalent enough to not care when students abuse you, and you've got plenty of time to burn (no spouse, no kids, no pets, no responsibilities), and you don't mind a below-average paycheck while your organization reaps money hand-over-fist, then sure, give working for Tutor.com a try. Just don't come back and say I didn't warn you.

What was the ratio of time you actually spent tutoring compared to the time you were logged on to work?

Perfect timing on the necro. I went through the entire process to become a tutor and stopped just short of actually doing any tutoring. But I'm graduating this semester (goodbye graduate assistantship) so I'm looking for ways to make money over the summer until I get into a new grad program and have another assistantship. I was considering going back to tutor.com as one of my jobs (though the demand for tutors will probably fall since summer is coming). How does the pay work? Is it hourly? How much do you make?

Another website that does this is http://www.wyzant.com/Home.aspx

My friend worked for it tutoring Japanese for a short time. He said it was fine but it really wasn't for him. I guess he didn't have a bad experience with it.

Do you have any guesses as to how much they pay?
