I wouldn't be surprised if they did research it, but simply ignored what they found. I'm sure they'd rather present a story about supposed racist symbolism, than some old internet joke that virtually no one would understand.

Linking a 4chan thread is generally a not a good thing to do, because in 30 minutes (at most) it won't matter.

That's really only the case for /b/. Over on /e/, for instance, threads commonly stay up for 3-4 days.

edit: I think the meme was created when the guys that raided Habbo the first time decided to use the afroguy sprite to block pool ladders. Someone probably just yelled it randomly and it's stuck around for the last 5 years.
