The highly anticipated film adaptation of Watchmen is about to hit theaters on March 6. It's fairly common knowledge in the nerdosphere that the comic within the comic, The Black Freighter, will be released on DVD as a seperate animated companion piece to the film. We expected a super-long director's cut to be on the eventual DVD release of Watchmen. And that it would probably edit The Black Freighter back into the film -- just as it was in the original graphic novel. Well, at a recent screening of the movie, Zack Snyder mentioned that the director's cut may make it to theaters at some point.

“The director’s cut is three hours and 10 minutes and comes out in July,” Snyder revealed, calling his original edit “considerably more violent than this … and sexier” and explaining that if the movie does well, the director’s cut will get a theatrical release in Los Angeles and New York.

Following that, of course, will be the Watchmen DVD in the fall. This will include, what he dubbed, a “Crazy Ultimate Freaky Edition” boasting such time-omitted extras as Tales of the Black Freighter, Hollis Mason’s death, more Manhatten moments on Mars and dialogue-heavy scenes with the newsstand-bonding Bernies.

It seems that Snyder is doing his best to pay fan service to the Watchmen purists. He's doing his best to work around the system and give us the longest, most accurate adaptation possible. My only fear is this: While I love director's cuts and extended versions of films, the combination of everything of this version is said to be three and a half hours. Now, I do own the 4 plus hour extended edition of The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, but watching that in one sitting is like running a marathon. But who am I kidding? Of course, I'm going to buy it. So will you, right? The discs better have blood-splattered smiley faces on them

Zack Snyder confirmed again that there will be a limited theatrical release of an extended director's cut of Watchmen in July, and revealed that the opening title montage featured two deleted shots that may appear on a future Blu-ray or DVD, speaking in a panel at WonderCon in San Francisco on Saturday. (Spoilers ahead!)

The deleted shots from the title sequence include one of Edward Blake/the Comedian raising the flag on Iwo Jima in World War II and a shot of the inauguration of Richard Nixon. "They'll be somewhere," Snyder said, referring to future iterations of the movie that may appear on home video.

The opening title sequence is a montage of scenes that establish the 1985 alternate-universe New York of Watchmen, based in part on iconic images from art and popular culture, including a Last Supper-style retirement party for Sally Jupiter (Carla Gugino) and the assassination of John F. Kennedy by Edward Blake/the Comedian (Jeffrey Dean Morgan).

As for the three-hour 10-minute director's cut, Snyder said that it would restore a sequence of Hollis Mason's death as well as "other bits and bobs ... a whole lot more naked blueness in it, too." Snyder got notes from Warner Brothers to cut some of the shots of Dr. Manhattan's blue, uh, manhood, as well as trim some of the film's graphic violence for the two-hour 37-minute theatrical release, which he agreed to "to be fair," he said.

As part of the WonderCon panel, Snyder also screened the opening portion of the movie, starting with the death of Blake, the title montage and Rorschach's initial investigation of Blake's death, right up to his conversation with Dan Dreiberg (Patrick Wilson) in the owl cave.

Snyder also addressed the question of a sequel again and denied again that he would have anything to do with one, whether the studio goes ahead or not. "It's a surprising question to me, because to me it seems impossible to even talk about, because it's like a sequel to Moby Dick or something," Snyder said. Watchmen opens March 6.

Frankly I thought the new ending worked out well enough. After all, it is Doc Manhattan's tech that made it possible, why not put the blame on him?

I wanted to see Roarschach burn the child murderer alive as per the book, but splitting his head open was vicious enough.

Also, for the record. The IMAX at the AMC Easton 30 in Columbus, OH sucks major cock. The film physically broke before the tenament fire scene, and took them nearly an hour to get it fixed, then dealt with sporadic stops/starts due to audio lag and the IMAX system crashing due to it. They ended up giving us a pair of passes each. AMC = Epic fail

Outside of the theater related issues, I don't think it was bad at all. Some of the acting was shoddy at times, but frankly they stayed true to the source material throughout. What few minor changes they did make were minor at best (really you'd have to know the book well to catch em). It's not perfect, but it gets the job done. I'll say a solid B in my book.

Just got back from the midnight showing.


Ive heard alot about the novel, but never took the time to pick it up for whatever reason, even with my love of comics. I went into the theater tonight not knowing what to expect, but I walked out a fan. I picked up the graphic novel and it sits on my desk to be read tomorrow. I cant argue on the side of the elitist perfectionists that say this movie was going to bastardize the comic. However, I can speak from a perspective of some one who was completely new to the series and characters. The director really made it easy for people to become familiar with everyone, because his portrayal seemed to have just the right amount of everyone who was supposed to be important at the right times. I can honestly say that I enjoyed Watchmen more than Dark Knight, and I saw Dark Knight 3 times (I still love it to death though). Other than a very awkward sex scene, and the massive amounts of blue cawk, I didnt want to miss a single second. Sex scenes and nudity dont bother me at all when they are neccesary in cinema. But at times I feel like they would just show off Dr. Manhattans schlong just to get a rise out of the audience and tbh, it was kind of annoying in the theater listening to the peanut gallery's nervous giggles as Manhattan floated around in all of his blue glory every 10 minutes.

Of course, its typical for some one to side with a character like him, but the best line of the whole movie ended up coming from Rorschach:
"I'M NOT LOCKED IN HERE WITH ALL OF YOU. YOU'RE ALL LOCKED IN HERE WITH ME!"

Ok saw it... I would rather people who have seen this movie, especially if they have also read the book read my spoiler. Do NOT read it if you have not seen the movie. Fair warning. Actually HUGE FUCKING WARNING. DO NOT READ MY SPOILER IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE. I DON'T CARE IF YOU"VE READ THE BOOK. MY REVIEW IS NOT ONLY LONG BUT REQUIRES YOU TO HAVE AT LEAST SEEN THE MOVIE BY NOW.

I have mixed feelings on this movie.

Overall I loved it personally. From fan perspective this was damn near the best you could do to bring this book to the big screen. Any major changes and/or cuts were necessary and I can see a director's cut making this movie even more enjoyable. Seeing the small references to the comics here and there were great. (Especially seeing Rorschach right in the start of the movie as a kid) Seeing the personalities on screen were perfect. They hit everything spot on. The only subtle changes I would have make would be Nite Owl and Oxy. I'd make Nite Owl less "screamingly" middle aged looking and Adrian looked as skinny as me...

But... from a movie perspective this movie will get mixed reviews and I can see more bad reviews to roll in. Here is why.

I've said I like it from my fan perspective. From a movie goers perspective this would have been a confusing movie. I dare say, some people will see this as a poor movie.

Visually it was hit and miss. CG has come a long way and a lot of this screamed CG. Sure some of it could not be helped, but a lot of it could have improved. I think something they were trying to capture was the "comic" book look of destruction on small and large scaled. Instead it came off as a disaster movie I would expect to see made for TV. Some of the scenes lacked so much detail you simply had to let your imagination accept it.

It was impossible for me to get over the fact that Nixon looked so forced. I couldn't put my mind that he was Nixon. Usually Ill let CG and makeup slide, let my imagination take hold, and really get into the movie. But I found myself so distracted by how silly he looked...

A large part of the center was very dry. (My brother fell asleep twice, I'm not kidding) The problem here was the story and character development. The only 2 characters in my opinion that were fully developed were Rorschach and The Comedian.

The rest of the crew were either underdeveloped, developed to late, or rushed. Especially Dr. Manhattan and Veidt. What disappoints here is that they play such a large roll to the end of the movie.

Heres what I saw at the theater. Dr. M comes on the screen and you definitely get a sense of ego and intelligence from him. But that's it. He's just a naked blue guy running around sounding like C-3PO. Most of the audience, who I would assume did not read the book, couldn't help but chuckle over this full blown nude guy running around. They needed to develop him earlier on, right before the funeral.

He is such a powerful compelling character and its not until he says his story and wraps up the movie do you get that. Then you accept the fact that this a god among men who has no use for clothes, sees time as one, and struggles to understand the meaning of human life. Nope, you don't get that until 3/4 of the movie is over and all you see is a big blue c3po with his dick hanging out, but with a bigger ego then the robot and having trouble pleasing his woman.

I have the same strong feelings towards Veidt's character as well. He needed to be developed more as well. I bet you can't count more then 5 times in which they mention his nickname. Yes he's retired but it still hurts the development.

The rest were just fine for the movie purposes. Rorschach is investigating the Comedian's death. The Comedian touch everyone's life in some way and is tied to the entire plot. The rest are helping Rorsach and are along for the ride to learn about the plot. Dr. M and Veidt who play such a huge roll in the plot and end lack the proper development and so the ending which from my perspective was awesome... Was kinda "oh well that would've been cool if it wasn't rushed" to movie goers perspectives.

Those were my major issues with this as a movie to new viewers unfamiliar to this novel.

One last thing... The sex scene on the ship. It screemed "HEY LOOK ANOTHER 300 LIKE SEX SCENE! WE EVEN HAVE THE SAME LIGHTING AND SOME OF THE SAME MOVES! OH WAIT LETS ADD A NEW ONE IN----> ASS SHOT, THRUSTING INTO HER!" I have 0 problems when sex scenes are in movies, but this screamed 300 so much it made it feel completely out of place... Just made it seem like a copy and paste and/or an excuse to see her naked. This could have been washed down a lot and had the same effect as it did in the comic.

Despite all this, I think one thing that it might do is provoke some people into reading the comic then re-viewing the movie. Like I said, if you've read it, you will like this. With the characters already 100% built in your mind, you are simply seeing the largest scenes played out quite nicely on the big screen. The subtle references left and right to things that were cut out will make u say "thats cool" out loud. And remember, we have the extended DVD to look forward to. Last thing is this.

If you did NOT like this movie and u were a fan before hand, please remember how long this movie was and try to keep in mind that you have to pick and choose what is cut to fit this into a movie. I just think overall their attempt to do just that hurt the movie for new fans, not old ones.

Oh for the Rorschach scene

Well, as I slowly pick myself up from the midnight showing as well as the drinking, it was a pretty decent movie all things considered. I agree w/most everything Tekki described, there were a few issues but I was definitely glad I saw it at the midnight release. I don't know if I'd see it again in theaters yet, I really need to read the graphic novel so I can make some sense of the differences. D: Anyone know a place where I could get it for cheapsauce?

i will agree with the fact that Dr. M was completely under developed for me. He was my favorite character in the whole film and I wished his back story could have been fleshed out a lot more than it was.
