The Watchmen Movie

Saw this trailer last night at TDK, thought it looked pretty intense. Almost a year away though. =(

So this is like the first time i've heard of this superhero, can i get a quick summary of this hero? or heroes* ?

When I first saw this trailer, I thought of Thor ._.;

As quick a summary as I can manage:

Takes the idea that 50's superheros were mostly just masked vigilantes with serious personality defects and that actual superpowers don't exist until an accident creates Doctor Manhattan (the guy getting ripped apart at the beginning of the trailer/the blue guy who can clone himself when convenient and grow huge to destroy Vietnam).

Fast forward to the height of the Cold War, where vigilantism is outlawed (the riot scene you see) and America holds all the cards in having Manhattan on their side. Unfortunately, events conspire to alienate Manhattan from humankind and he exiles himself to Mars (you see this in the trailer as well), removing the lynchpin of America's military supremacy and triggering fears of a nuclear holocaust.

Meanwhile someone's been assassinating retired 'masks' and Rorschach, a vigilante who never obeyed the ban, begins an investigation into the murders that becomes the main plot thread. Every other 'hero' seen in the trailer is related to Rorschach's investigation of who is behind the murders; a lot of what is seen in the trailer is in fact flashbacks that flesh out why superheros are in the state that they're in by the mid 1980s.

So I've never read a comic book/graphic novel in my life. I'm a huge reader of novels though. Anyway, I was blown away by the preview that I grabbed the twelve novels. I'm through the second now. Really good so far...

I've been trying to find the graphic novel for awhile now, but they never seem to have it at most bookstores. city I'm in right now doesn't have a proper comic book shop either.

and trailer looked pretty great. I hope the visuals aren't as quite as gimmicky throughout as 300's were (300 was visually neat, but just flat and pretty similar over the whole film).

there's a new edition where the old style artwork (grainy dots, low variety of colors) has been re-inked or something, little more solid, generally more visually pleasing

I noticed the graphic novel in the booksotre about a year ago, didn't think much of it; I was very deterred by the 1960's style comic art.. anyway, be warned the new edition will ring you up at least 70 bucks

Hm, I've always seen it in the chain bookstores...Amazon tends to have large reductions off the cover price for graphic novels though. So I usually buy them there anyway.

It will be interesting to see how the director deals with changing "the catastrophic climax" while retaining the ending. I also hope this subplot about alternative fuels they are adding (see page 5 of the feature) won't mess up the pacing of the film. Says he is trying to cut 30 min off the final run time (clocking in at 3 hours, wants 2:30).

I'm guessing they're only going to change the details about how half of New York ends up killed in the film's climax. They're probably not going to do it with a massive genetically engineered alien brain exploding via telportation. Any sufficiently alien-looking destruction would still fit the original scripting, it only needs to be big enough to be accidentally spotted by the Comedian (therefore getting him killed).

About the only way they could fuck it up is by not killing anyone in New York out of some 'post 9/11' jitters about filming such a disaster

I think it's more that they don't want to draw parallels between 9/11 and the ending for their movie. Not that it's exactly the same, but like has been mentioned, they don't need to use that -exact- plot mechanism to get the same effect, since the details are really rather minor provided the larger scope of it is unchanged.

I saw the Dark Knight for the second time last night and saw the trailer for this again. I forgot to see if there was a thread on BG the first time. This movie looks so sick, I got chills seeing it even the second time, and I don't even follow comic books or anything it just looked like a good movie. Is the comic book story long or short? I've always wondered if it's possible to just jump into comics or would I be like so far behind the storyline that it would be unenjoyable?
