I mostly used the pull, dot, fear, dot x2, send pet repeat method. It's a little risky in mob-crowded areas but it works wonders as long as you don't mind skipping the occasional corpse looting. For this reason I hate the imp, who has zero ability to help you kill a fleeing mob.
I've yet to see any numbers on Shadow Bite vs. Lash of Pain though, I'll dig through more. On the one hand, Lash of Pain does consistent damage. Shadow Bite requires a small stack of dots to get any bonuses, so the first one will always do less damage than Lash of Pain. If a mob dies in 12-16 seconds is the dot stack enough to pull ahead? To e-j!
