    Keyboard issue

I use to play on laptop and so I've been using compact keyboard setting for FFXI. I recently got a PC. Got everything running fine (set it to compact keyboard too), except for one problem. I use WASD to move, but this doesn't work when I'm holding the ctrl or alt keys. I've tried this on chat too, I can't type any letters with the ctrl key held. I never had this on my laptop, so I don't know if its normal for PCs. I tried connecting a different keyboard too, but got the same problem.

This only really poses a problem for kiting stuff, as all my JA macros include gearswaps to stop me stopping. But now when I hold ctrl to hit a macro I stop.

Probably because you have WASD mapped to movement, and using CTRL and ALT technically is pressing something else. If you were using MS Word, you wouldn't be able to type while holding down CTRL either.

What about engaging auto-run while kiting?

Can you double up on your mappings? Like have W and CTRL+W work for forward? (WoW can do this can't remember if FFXI will let you :X )

I'll try doubling up mapping. I can auto run and use macros at the same time, its just a hassle cause I'm use to normal running. I just don't get why this worked when I used my laptop for playing but not for my PC.

It's the way your keyboard is built. There are a few circuits inside a membrane keyboard, which limits the number of keystrokes that can be read at any given time. Probably the reason you can't do what you want.

    Buy a new keyboard.

This is the keyboard I use to hook up to my laptop, and I didn't have the problem then. I tried using the keyboard I got with the PC, but it doesn't make a difference.

I don't think I can set ctrl + W as run either. I tried it in the ingame config, and couldnt think of anywhere else to set keys..

I think the motherboard has more to do with it than the keyboard; I rebuilt my PC a while back, and before I did it I'm pretty sure I could hit a lot more keys at once than I can now (a difference from like 6 keys at once down to 3, I could run manually and scroll macro palettes before, now if I try to scroll macros I stop running).

given that it's the same keyboard, i'm curious if you connected it differently to your laptop as to your desktop? IE is it a USB keyboard w/ a PS2 adapter? did you use USB for your laptop and PS2 for your desktop? i know that i've had my PC do a motherboard beep before when i struck more than 3 keys on a keyboard leading me to believe it could be the motherboard not liking more than 3 scancodes at once as was mentioned above. it's entirely possible that the USB controller is more flexible, allowing more codes at once w/o freaking out. just conjecture though.

If it's a USB keyboard with a PS2 converter, I could see that happening.

USB and PS2 are both serial and support 5v, but USB can handle a much higher amount of data.

The keyboard I'm using at the moment is a USB one. Was connected to laptop using a USB port, and is connected to my PC through a USB port.

My other keyboard (that suffers from the same problem) connected to the PS2.
