Paladins with Magnetic earring? (vs Ethereal Earring)

I haven't done Apoc Nigh yet, but the reward options are one of the things I want most.

I guess my first question is, what happens when the mob hits you for say.. 10.. with the Ethereal Earring) 3% of 10 is 0.3, do you recover 1 mp? What happens when the mob hits you for 0?

The Conserve MP factor of Magnetic Earring is a +, but the Spell Interruption Rate- seems solid also.

Have any other Paladins made the choice for Magnetic Earring? Do you regret it, or are you glad you did?

33 or less damage = no mp recovered, but ethereal still has hp on it and is a nice idle piece >.>; Speaking as a RDM that tanks(in addition to soloing, standard rdm situations, etc), I'm happy with ethereal. I understand RDM isn't quite the same thing as PLD, but I would recommend ethereal.

Getting 300+ MP back after CR hits you with 10k Needles at 1% is priceless(thus allowing me to RR and nuke one last time to kill). Ethereal>all! Thing is in all my Idle macros, on all my jobs with MP.

I thought about this pretty extensively for a time, but decided against magnetic (would have been my second time changing AN earring too ) But with a Conserve MP procing on only 5 spells out of 100 I don't think you would get nearly the benefit that you do when you slapped around with Ethereal on. The spell interruption - is a nice perk but you might as well macro in Knightly Earring + Loquacious for a larger Spell interruption -.

    Thanks!

I was still leaning towards Ethereal, and your responses have helped me. I prefer the lesser mp jobs, pld, drk, blu.

That's disappointing about the 33 or less damage though, I wish sentinel/ss/phalanx's buff didn't interfere there like it doesn't with reprisal.

How does that work? Wouldn't you personally need to get hit with 9990 damage to get 300+mp back?

I think that's what he meant.

He got 10k at 1%, got 300 Mp for it, had RR up, and that mp he got filled made sure he had full mp when he RRed so he could nuke him.

qft. This earring is absolutely incredible, I love love love it to death on my BRD idle, PLD idle, NIN/DRK idle, etc. It makes a gigantic difference, especially in situations where you aren't eating a 7+/tick refresh.

Problem with that is the NM would run off before you had time to wait the 10 seconds and reraise if you were the only person on it, which is what I would assume dan was referring to.

Iunno about how long he holds aggro, if he could be bound or whatnot, etc.

I agree completely that if unlike myself, you EVER use Mp and get hit, Ethereal really is a mighty sexy piece.

If I fell in love with Pld I'd get one for sure, same for Drg, Drk, Rdm (if I lost my damn mind and releveled it), etc.

Was duoing it, 2 RDMs at max distance. It readied 10k Needles and the other RDM ran out of range, I ate it full on solo.

I thought about this question a while back, and I think you can judge this question in an analytic fashion using only a few basic assumptions, but I'm not sure whether or not I posted at the time.

    The assumptions are:
    1. Conserve MP from earring is your only Conserve MP item, and that it is exactly 5% activation chance (and not some fraction of a power of two).
    2. The chance of getting an n/16 reduction in MP cost is uniform for 1 <= n <= 8 (I believe there are tests somewhere showing this).
    3. You take damage only in increments that maximize the MP recovered per damage (this is obviously not going to be the case, but as long as you only factor in damage of at least a certain amount, you can modify the formula below slightly to account for the average MP gained for HP lost over a longer term after countering against similar flooring in conserve MP procs by magnetic, or you could leave it biased in favor of ethereal to attempt to account for the unquantifiable situations like Judai's above).
    4. You are maintaining a more-or-less steady level of current MP over the fight, never falling too low to use a spell, nor sitting on full MP (I think most good tanks will find something to do with their MP when they have it in excess).

Then if R is the amount of MP you recover per tick with your typical support, using the formula 1125*R/4 gives you a value, for which, under the above assumptions, the total damage taken over the course of 30 minutes leads to an MP return from ethereal equal to the average saved in the same period of time by magnetic.

As a basic example, if you typically have 7 MP/tick (job trait + refresh + ballad II + one piece of refresh armor), then Ethereal beats Magnetic taking 1969 or more damage every 30 minutes (again using the above assumptions).

In case you wish to rework the formula, it was reached by taking R * the number of ticks of refresh over 30 minutes (600) * the proc rate on magnetic (1/20) * the average MP conserved in a proc (9/32) * the amount of damage taken per MP returned on ethereal (100/3)

Nice! Thank you. Yeah I was still leaning towards Ethereal, but I just liked to consider options. I'm a little (too) fond of pld/dnc for some soloing but have been doing some pld/rdm, mostly in campaign so I could barspam in downtime for skillups. And since besides npc's, you're lucking to get any cure help solo, I can definitely feel pld/rdm's use for ethereal. I think my choice is made for certain. Not a single person here has concluded that Magnetic was the better choice for PLD main.

I've heard the debate of a PLD with Aegis maybe not wanting to get an Ethereal earring, which holds some merit, but for every other PLD, there really isn't any other choice.

Other fun Ethereal jobs include RDM, BLU, DRG, any other job that wants a really good free DD earring, and any job that uses MP and gets hit.

(Hopefully I'll be getting mine this Thursday, I'm pumped...)

Friend of mine ends up trying to solo very stupid things with his ethereal as DRG/WHM. I think on his fourth try actually managed to kill a Skoffin out at MJTG.

I personally like using Ethereal on RDM or BLU to tank Campaign mobs when the time arrises that I need to refresh my seal. Or when I end up kiting something on BLM....
