didnt read the last 2 books, did the series ever come back from the terrible waste of space book 5 was?
Depends on what you didn't like about them. If you found the lighter, more childish overall tone of the book annoying, the 6th and especially the 7th book leave that behind completely. They are very, very dark stories, and clearly no longer intended for children.

If the whole Hogwarts school thing got to you, Harry, Ron, and Hermione don't go back to Hogwarts in the 7th.

Completely depends on what made you classify the first 5 as a "waste of space."

I must admit I do not like the movies. They're okay as pretty much mindless entertainment, but the books actually make you think, which... is lost completely in the movies.

Also I can never forgive them for the travesty that was the Prisoner of Azkaban movie (it's my favorite book in the series). Gary Oldman as Sirius just doesn't do it for me, as he's my favorite character, and I just don't think Oldman acts him well or even fits the role right. =(

I'll see HBP, but I don't hold out any hope for it, it's too hard to keep the book from running through my head and going "But then THIS was supposed to happen! How could they mess up THIS scene?!"

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Not liking Gary Oldman in any role he plays should be illegal. The man is a god among actors.

J.K. Rowling signed off on every movie so far.. unfortunately.

I wouldn't go so far as to say OoTP was a waste of space.. it wasn't great by any means but it has a lot of filler material and setup for the last two books.

It's also the first book of the series I actually read.. yeah I'm weird I know.

I don't blame Oldman for this.. I think the real problem is that the adapted screenplays for Azkaban, Goblet & Order are atrocious and Oldman had to do the best he could with it.

As did Terry Goodkind sign off on (and approve each script for) the Sword of Truth series TV adaptation. That didn't prevent the series from being total garbage so far

It's sort of status-quo with novels into movies. You have to make the movie for those who didn't read the books, because you know the folks that DID read the books will go see the movies anyways.

Closest a movie got to the novel(s), IMO, was the LoTR series. Even then they dumped some stuff, that as a reader of the books, I was sorta of mad at, but understood why in a cinematic setting. Honestly, Fellowship, once outside the Shire is damn near spot on with the book, as is a good portion of Two Towers, Return of the King gets a little goofy, and kind of spins out on it's third ending attempt.

As someone who never read a Harry Potter book, I've actually enjoyed the movies more as the series has gone on. Looking forward to the wrap up of the series.

Oh dear god why. Why would... just why?

As for Gary Oldman, I know he's a great actor, I just don't think he was right for the part, in my eyes. He probably fit others' views of Sirius quite well. The first two movies were pretty close to the book, but 3 and on took some very interesting liberties that rankle with me and make me pretty angry as a fan of the books. I know a lot of people only watch the movies, and I think because the movies don't do justice to the books whatsoever that it's unfair treatment to the series (which, while just a tad overhyped, is honestly one of the best/most epic teen fantasy series available).
