Video streaming to xbox360 with WMP/Zune/anything not media center

So I'm trying to setup my 360 to stream, I can get pictures and music to work, but for some reason it shows any video folders as empty. Is there some obvious thing that I'm missing that I need to do?

I use WMP's sharing system, and in order for it to see my videos they have to be in WMP's "monitored" library folders. They also have to be in WMP-playable containers (even if WMP can't make sense of the codec), avi mpg etc.

mp4 will never show up, or mkv.

I use TVersity to share my video files, it works pretty well.

Well after restarting both computer and 360 a few times, it's decided that it can see and play wmvs, see but not play an avi and not even recognize an mpg.

we had good success with Orb/Orbb about a year ago.

personally, I'm selling my xbox360 and getting a ps3 since my experience with both lead me to the sense that the ps3 requires less tweaking to get to work with most containers.

as far as 360 with AVI goes: it only supports certain codecs and the avi container can hold quite a few different ones. 360 using media extender does not support DivX/Xvid video streams and since those are the two most common streams used in avi containers today..

When viewing what? So far I have watched 4 divx's movies without any problems.

But it does support divx/xvid via file browser and direct streaming. Media extender is a function of Windows Media Center, the HTPC frontend in XP/Vista, not just normal streaming video.

I was never able to get file browsing to work right (although I was never able to get my 360 to see an XP machine period so it's probably not a platform wide issue, just a problem with my particular boxen/configuration etc.)

I haven't had these problems at all with ps3, which has the added bonus of not having virtually every good exclusive release on PC within a year.

If I didn't have a high end gaming rig I would probably like the 360 more but when I look at how sensitive the interface has been to set up and the relatively low number of exclusive titles I'm interested in playing (thus far it was basically just DOA4 and Halo 3) it just doesn't make sense for me to have one.


rumor has it that the newer extender profile is going to be added to the 360 sometime this year, which will extend support to xvid/DivX codecs in avi containers to the 360. (this profile is already in use on some dedicated extender set top boxes) so that may resolve that issue as well for those who couldn't/don't want to do file browser setup.
