Dexter: Season 3

Finallyyyyyyyyyyyy, this is one of the few shows I actually watch on tv, extremely happy its almost back(well 2 months isnt really almost is it )

I won't miss Doakes. I guess it's good for the series to have someone out of control, because a lot of people find that interesting, but I thought that the Lila/Lundy combo really provided all the same elements of threat in a much more interesting way. I think season 3 will be a lot better for his absence.

How can you say that? Doakes brought so much to the show, his thing with Dexter was endlessly entertaining to watch (like, "I own you." *Headbutt to the face*), he was a good guy, if not a little obsessed and he was right to suspect Dexter and you can see why he would.

I hope they don't blow it! If I were a writer, I would have run out of ideas by now and there's only so much they can do without repeating the same things or making ridiculous scenarios. Prison Break, 24, Heroes, Scrubs used to be good/great shows, but they've gone to crap lately and maybe I've just lost trust in most TV writers outside of the Lost guys.

to be fair to heroes, the second season got shorted by something like 8 episodes because of the guild strike, and so they ended up basically compressing a half season worth of plots and subplots into 3 episodes.

as you saw it was pretty messy, but when you look at how involved the first season's plot was it isn't really surprising that the pacing and storyline got thrown off so badly by the compression.

Like I said in the other thread, I just don't think getting a creepy vibe is reason enough for a rational person to turn to stalking. I was having this conversation with my husband earlier. Basically, I think what Doakes did was stupid. He didn't ever really try to present the situation unemotionally and rationally to anyone else. He couldn't control his anger, and as a result nobody believed him. After a while, he completely abandoned trying to get Dexter legally off the streets and broke into his house looking for the evidence he needed to figure out what Dex was up to. What was his plan from that point? As a cop, he would know that none of the evidence he swiped would have been admissable in court, so his plan must have been to exact vigilante justice. Isn't that exactly what he was trying to bust Dexter for doing? Come on. I thought he was hypocritical and weak. When you can't get yourself in hand and you're not even taken seriously at your job where you're a fucking cop and it's pretty important to be taken seriously, you should really know it's time to change your approach. He never figured that out. Fuck Doakes, good riddance.

Edit: I also thought that Dexter's ability to manipulate Doakes (as in the headbutting scene) was the only thing that made their interactions exciting. Doakes was too thick to see what was going on: Dexter knew that if he couldn't make the stalking stop, the thing to do was to completely discredit him. Wow, imagine that. A thinking character! One that sees his approach is not working and then formulates a solution! Doakes could have learned something.

Not everyone has the ability to be completely unemotional and rationale like Dexter. Some people are just wired like that, of course Doakes is going to do whatever it takes, even if evidence gained is useless it still would hurt Dexter greatly. It's something that can never be found out, whether he would have went to jail for it or not.

How boring would it be to watch a show where every character makes the right moves? Different characters have different ways of doing things. The chase was fun to watch, the exposure was great to watch and the results were also good. So Doakes isn't likable as a character (though I personally loved him, "oh and you owe me a new michelin motherfucker") but there's no doubt the season was interesting because of him.

I wasn't really looking for him to necessarily make the right moves -- just make smart ones. I don't understand how he can be a successful detective if he doesn't have the ability to outwit the people he's pursuing. I just felt that most of the things he did were really predictable because his entire character was wholly defined by that one aspect of his personality. Rarrr I'm angry and it's easy to get a rise out of me.

I mean jesus, even doing something as simple as anonymously tipping off Lundy's team about Dexter's weird behavior would have probably given the information enough credibility to be investigated. I thought he was one-dimensional and just someone who was easily able to move the story forward, rather than being smart and multi-layered, as I think the main players should be.

And I still think that anyone who isn't capable of reigning in their emotions and keeping themselves under control for a simple discussion is weak. He's a cop; I don't see how he can do his job without being able to distance himself to some degree from his emotions. That is the sort of thing that ruins investigations and gets yourself and others injured.
