If you like sports games BaseWars is freaking awesome. Basic premise is a baseball team that is completely robotic, I think 3-4 differenty types of robots. You can start a season and as you win more games/money you can pimp out your robots with higher tech gear/weapons. If you are going to get tagged out on the bases, a battle ensues and you fight for the base. After your robots are strong enough you can basically just run around the bases and beat everyone up to score with a single.

can't believe nobody mentioned Ninja Gadien 1-3. Very epic, very hard games.

I remember as a kid, I got to the point where I'd just drop the controller and walk away when the carrier came up, because in my mind I had finished the mission and knew I wasn't going to make the landing.

Ah, I never played the carts, only ROM (that was apparently hacked and translated or something? I seem to recall english, but it definitely wasn't Snake's Revenge), so that's why I brought it up.
